Everyone United have is position or formation reliant. The reason we can get them is they lack that versatility at the top level.

But Hamer should be good enough,in a terrible team to play a completely different role?

I really hope Heckyt isn't going in to Premier League games "hoping" something might or might not happen. If so, the naivety is off the scale! You can't hope things will turn out ok in this league, you've gotta make sure it does. You can't hope that VAR will it right, you can't hope that Nketiah doesnt hit a perfect shot in the top corner, you can't hope that the ball wont go through someone's legs on the way in. We wont get any luck this season, we have to make things happen and not just hope for the best.
 
Coventry played him as one of the midfield two in a 3-4-1-2/3-4-2-1. I assumed that when we signed him, we were planning on playing something similar. Instead we seem to want to play him anywhere but there. For me, you drop Norwood or Souza, play one of them (or someone else) with Hamer in a double pivot and you build around him.

I get your point about our players and what we have bought. Hamer does give the ball away a bit but overall he has been one of the better players. I suppose my point is I do think he has the attributes to play both CM defensively and CM pushed forward. The performances overall mean that we are unlikely to see that. Tactically we have no observable system. There are plenty of players across all sports that can play in other positions and perform equally well.
 
Thought he was excellent alongside Souza yesterday. His name isn't attributed to a goal or assist but his contribution cannot be understated. He got us out of the shit at least twice with his tracking back.

Has anyone with access to football analytics/stats have anything on his performance yesterday?
 
I’ve seen threads calling out Norwood, Souza but what about this waste of space? He floats about aimlessly, offering nothing. Cost 15m btw! What a waste of money!!

Which is what? Because I struggle to see what that would be. And quality players shine in any position so that’s a piss poor excuse. He’s shite!

Didnt watch today but the games i’ve watched i’ve been disappointed in his general play and how poor he’s been in possession. Like others say he’s not being played how or where he should and playing under a clueless manager & tactician.

On current showing he been poor, i think most players would be in this shambles of a team though.
 
There was a passage of play in the first half that summed him up perfectly - where he lost the ball carelessly, sprinted along side the Bournemouth player for 40 yards and then when he went to make the tackle just got swatted off like a fly ...

Another who jogged around, was careless with the ball and weak as girl guide piss when forced to defend ...

Look up three posts from your bump. If we dropped Norwood or Souza and played him along the other with something like McAtee and Archer off McBurnie I am convinced he looks a lot better. I don't disagree with your sentiment that the concept of "position" is overrated (although I'm sure that if we signed someone who was playing as a winger for their club in the JTW you would be "why are we signing a winger we don't play with wingers"), but it's the principle of setting up your team to bring the best out of the players you are selecting. And that is not on Hamer, Souza or Norwood

If you think he’s worth more than that you’re pissed up! He’s done nothing in the last 10+ games. He gets an easy ride off fans as he came with a good reputation and marquee signing. Call it for what it is!

If you put Hamer on the transfer list for that the fax machine runs out of paper from interested parties making bids. You don't think he's playing well, that's fine, same as most the team, there's not really a need to make ridiculous hyperbolic statements like calling him a useless prick
 
How the fuck do you go from being probably the best midfielder in the Championship to this ?

He did for 15 minutes today! When Osborn (66 mins) came on we switched to a 4-4-2 with Hamer partnering Norwood in central midfield. Hamer then went off after 81 minutes.

It was quite messy at the time and I'm not sure we learned much. I noticed one occasion during this spell where Hamer came deep for the ball and looked to playmake, but that's really Norwood's thing, and they sort of got in each others' way.

I really think we need to try Hamer and Souza centrally. One reason is that we can simplify our game and role instructions. Souza - stay central, challenge, win the ball and give it short and quickly to someone else. Hamer - get on and carry the ball and look for a teammate moving forward.

For some reason Hecky wants to die on the following hills:
  • A back 5 at all times
  • A midfield 3 of Souza, Hamer and Norwood.
