Billy sharp

While I can see the point of not retaining players of a certain age to make room for younger ones when money's tight, in my opinion what it did in fact was change the character of the dressing room, at a time experience was crucial for the youngsters and in coming new players...
So Baldock, Egan, Norwood, Basham, Fleck, Foderingham aren't experienced enough for you??

Horrid take.

Great thinking by the club that having not been able to sign Billy to a further year, thank God we managed to secure Fleck for 12 more months, eh!
Phew!

That's a fair point, if we could only have signed one of them, I would have rather signed Sharp.

This is with the benefit of hindsight though, I think when we resigned fleck, we were very light in midfield.

The problem is, by resigning Fleck we are still light in midfield and will continue to be because he’ll never play more than 20 mins in a handful of games without getting another injury. We also signed Tom Davies, another crock.

"Train with the Joey's" - best quote ever albeit inappropriate!

I didn't think he was too negative on us. At the end of the day the set up of Sam's (or anyone's) podcast is try to be controversial and create controversy and honesty. Football is a fucking awful industry for players and managers rights. They're benched, loaned, transferred, alienated and subject to clubs politics. Most players aren't the smartest and unfortunately for Billy, he's honest and not the most eloquent interviewee. Which is why we love him.

It was fairly obvious how he felt on the Town Hall balcony last May. He was understandably upset but got a hero’s send off; rightly so. Why drag it up again now, putting PH square in the middle of it when he’s got enough on his plate?
Saying he's available for Bournemouth and asking to train with us isn't really putting pressure on Hecky, the man who apparently wanted him to stay.

'Available for Bournemouth?' He's left the club. Don't you think we're doing Back To The Future enough already with Norwood and Fleck in the squad?
Old mantra - no one player is bigger than the club. He's a very good, very special ex-player. But an ex-player all the same.
Move on before it becomes embarrassing.

Mate, it's a joke.
He's not even signed.
Do you think he's genuinely writing that on Twitter expecting a call to be on the bench today? 😆

Billy's not said anything bad in my opinion, it's a real shame his time with us at the end wasn't what he wanted and he should have been treated better by the sounds of it, i.e, the Prince or Bettis should have communicated directly to him and explain why he wasn't getting a contract, assuming that hasn't happened and it doesn't sound like it did because he was communicating through Hecky. If Hecky wanted to keep Sharp, and we know he did, then Billy should still be here.

At the time I felt it was right to release Billy because he wasn't scoring the goals in the Championship, although he was still playing well enough, but then to sign only one striker of note (Archer) who's merely replaced Ndiaye numbers wise and the club knowing that Jebbo was ill was a major mistake by the board and Billy ironically would have started a few games this season. He wouldn't likely of scored many, nor has McBurnie either and he's still played well. I can only assume Brewster coming back to fitness was the reason we didn't sign another forward but he's not played in a year and is injury prone and not good enough even when fit, I'd have taken Billy over Brewster every week to be honest.

He hasn't possibly got over it because he feels badly treated by the club he's served so well and supports, he deserved better treatment.

I'm surprised by some of the takes in this thread.

Billy Sharp has unwavering self belief in his own ability as a player - it's a large part of what's made him a top striker and I'm not surprised he thought he could still do a job for us in the Prem.
He is of course going to be disappointed when he's not retained by the club he captains, loves and has just helped to return to the top flight. It's also clear not just from what Bill's said, but from what Hecky has alluded to, that the manager wanted him to stay.
It seems apparent that the decision not to keep Billy came from the ownership and not the manager. It would also appear that Hecky wanted to keep Sharp and went in to bat for him, but ultimately lost.
I think it is the mishandling of the situation that has left Billy feeling bitter. Once again it's poor communication and planning from the owners that has created an avoidable situation and left Hecky to play the diplomat in public. Bill's future could have been sorted out far in advance of the promotion parade.

My big take away from that interview is that Billy Sharp still loves SUFC and says himself that he would return (in any capacity) whenever the club calls for him. He may not be happy with some of the figures at the top, but he's a top Blade and a legend of the Lane. It's because he cares so much and has such a strong emotional tie to the club, that some of his public comments have been a bit misguided.

With Billy it is down to him what he wants to do in terms of calling it a day or playing on.

Didzy at Notts County is on a reported £5,400 a week (£280,800 a year) although Billy in the MLS at LA was only on £2,500 a week apparently which compared to his £12,000 a week that he left us on is a big drop. If he wants to finish the season out in League 1 or 2 I am sure there would be a few interested parties if they were matching his £2,500 a week wage demands.

Love Billy but if at the start of the season he would have been kept on good money as a glorified cheerleader as some seem to be suggesting I’m not really convinced how we would have all seen that. As things have turned out and with the benefit of hindsight maybe he would have got more game time. Would we have more points had he stayed? Not convinced myself.

At the beginning of the season and when Billy was released I thought the same that there wasn't the justification for Billy to start but then when I saw we'd not signed anyone other than Archer up top, not including development player Traore) and the returning Brewster I reckon Billy would have started around half of the league games quite honestly! Especially when you consider McBurnie's injuries and how we started the first few with Traore and Osula up top, I still can't believe we couldn't bring in anyone else in up top, it has really hampered us this season. If you're talking about a glorified cheerleader though I think that role goes to Brewster quite frankly.

Anyone who thinks that we should resign Sharp has got something lacking...... up top.

I know what you mean about Brewster but some people have been suggesting that Billy should have been kept for his leadership. At the time, and you have to think back to then, spending x thousand pound a week on someone no one expected would play hardly at all would have been rightly questioned especially after Billy played so little last year. I agree with hindsight maybe that would’ve been different but the decision wasn’t made with the benefit of knowing that.

Is this just your typical made up bollox by your typical pig fan (there’s a few similar) or does our Billy have a side to him?

From what I've read and heard over the years, a nasty piece of work.

Hides behind the whole local lad done good rubbish.

But on a much revised contract dont think Bill was up for that.
We can't answer that one though can we? Sounds like they ummed and ahhhed.
I suspect it was part of our summer transfer poor planning shenanigans. We were slow and indecisive in what it appeared to me.

Thing is it's not hard to be clear about things. If the board say, "we want you to focus on newer talent, we can't not appreciate the service Billy's done over the years but we think promotion and him as captain at aged 37 feels like a good time to part ways (For now) is our plan. We wish him well and welcome him back anytime". Then they should have done so.
Instead it sounds like they nearly offered him one then eventually just didn't, which is going to annoy you.

They also said when they announced his departure that for the likes of him and JOC and Stevens they would be commended. And that hasn't happened either.1700850450897.png

Like even right now they could say "we have of course allowed Sharp to train with us, but we are not currently planning on offering him a new contract."
It's not exactly hard is it?

Unless the board aren't happy with him? I mean they won't be now you would have thought....

It has to end sometime though unless we go down the Magic Johnson 25 year contract route, and what better time than a second and final promotion? He would have been embarrassed this season if given minutes unfortunately. He was not scoring and incredibly ineffective last year. It was the right time even if he doesn't believe it himself

I think the point he was trying to make is - they told me I was staying, so I thought I was, I was never given chance to say goodbye to the fans properly. They left it until the season ended to tell me Iam not staying. - That is not how you treat the captain, ex ball boy, fan and servant of the club. He gave everything and The club shit on him, he was treated awfully, it’s disgusting and it was very unprofessional by Sufc. Iam not surprised he is pissed off still ! He deserved to be treated with dignity and respect and he was showed none.

ive always seen billy as a future blades manager
he certainly seems to be manouvering hecky out the door with these comments
