Billy sharp

With the benefit of hindsight he should absolutely have been kept due to all the injuries we've had up front. Fleck was always going to be a complete waste of a squad place so would much rather have kept Billy instead but in the summer letting him go seemed like the right move as we had so many striker options, and he'd have been little more than a glorified cheerleader who wouldn't get in the matchday 20 if we were at full strength.

Given that we've never come close to full strength he'd have been a first team regular and could have made a bif difference particularly in those first few games before new players were brought in or integrated.

Lots of clubs let old players train with them while they're looking for new clubs, so given that he can't really sign anywhere until the window opens, bringing him in to make up the numbers in training and keep him fit seems like a reasonable idea. His little spell in LA showed he's still good enough to keep playing, so we may as well help him do that, even though we'd have to be pretty desperate to re-sign him properly.

I’d love to see him back at the Lane, but his days of playing Premier League football are behind him. Plus some other bugger’s got his shirt now anyway.

Considering how most of our forwards are made of paper you wonder if, given we are the tightest of tight gits, we might just find a spot for him for the rest of the season.

Osula has missed most of it. Jebbo all of it.
McBurnie has missed as many as he has played and Brewster had a fleeting return and is out again.

Bring him back to do what?

Player : NO
Coach : NO
Cheerleader : YES
Pre match compere : YES
Bramall Lane Tour Guide : YES

His last 2 seasons playing for us, had he been born anywhere other than Sheffield, he would have got absolute pelters on here for being too old and slow!
He was alright in the first season in the champ. Mostly shite last season tho aye

"I didn't leave, they got rid of me. My contract came to an end, which obviously happens, and I wanted to stay."

That's not how it works, they didn't get rid of you. The contract finished, that's it.

I'm sure the response to all of this is going to be sensible...

Love Billy but this isn't helpful to him or the club.

Hecky can say he wanted him but the club thought the money would be better used elsewhere. It would have been better if PA or Bettis had been straight with Billy when the season ended.

I think it shows how well planned we were this summer though.... Not very.
To say we were promoted with 4 games to spare we did not steal any march in terms of transfers or new contracts at all. We were yet again v.v.v.v.v.slow.

I suspect they couldn't decide whether to keep sharp due to what targets they were going for and budgets. Eventually they decided on not giving him a new deal.

It should have been an easy decision either way.

I love sharp and do think we should have done what was discussed with him and given him another years deal.
But he's not helping necessarily with the comments toward hecky.

Get better value later on in the window and players in their last year of their contracts play harder. Or something.

We were waiting for that first Premier League cheque to clear it seemed.

Yeah which is mostly rubbish.
Usually later in the window teams are scrambling for players so fees can be inflated.

Suppose there are exceptions when players become surplus to requirements and the likes of McAtee where a waiting game was the only option etc.

Whoever we were looking for, and waiting for to finalise our squad, Billy shouldn't even have been in the discussion. Hecky was weak saying he wanted to keep everyone at the end of last season when clearly some of our squad were past it.

He was dreadful last year when we had 60% of the ball most games, I shudder to think of him in a team with 25% of the ball, that creates 1-2 chances a game tops.

If we are gonna continue this bladey-blade nonsense every time his name is mentioned, I'd rather get Brian Deane back in as at least he has a bit of height, and could help defend corners! 🫠

Wasn't good enough for the Championship, no way on this planet good enough for the PL anymore.

However, I still think it was a mistake letting him go. We've lost a lot of senior players in recent years and I couldn't imagine us throwing in the towel like we did against Newcastle and Arsenal with him about.

Biggest 'look at me' interview since you know who was manager!!

Wasn't good enough for the Championship so why the feck he thought he'd get a PL contract shows you all you need to know about his self-awareness.

I
This for me I’m afraid. Owes us nothing and was fantastic, but time catches up with us all and he is no exception. He had a good season in the States where the standard isn’t even champ never mind prem.

Comes across a bit like the spurned lover and it’s not a great look

Bit disappointed with Sharp. Washing dirty linen in public and lacking in class from him methinks.

His contract came to an end. He was upset. That's very understandable. It happens.

Yeah he is venturing into Aaron Ramsdale territory with this latest podcast.

Unfortunately for Billy he has been turfed out by the club enough times over his career.

And that’s also a slightly different version of events which has been said before.

Very sad way to leave though for everyone

He feels like the board/staff have treated him unfairly, if you felt that way about any company in the world that you worked for you'd speak up. He supports the club and is a United fan, but like all fans it doesn't mean he backs the owners or the choices the club make.
Why should he keep quiet? He doesn't owe us anything, and it only stems from frustration, its nothing malicious.

It was fairly obvious how he felt on the Town Hall balcony last May. He was understandably upset but got a hero’s send off; rightly so. Why drag it up again now, putting PH square in the middle of it when he’s got enough on his plate?
