[Confirmed] Blackman to Reading - Undisclosed fee

Bad move in my opinion. Why sell him now? He signed a 2 year deal during the summer. At least wait until the end of the season. We still have a(n outside) chance of promotion, yet we sell our top goalscorer, most influential player this season, penalty taker and most dengerous player. The boy can take a penalty and has real ability. He has pace (sorely lacking in the team) and can run defenders ragged. He might drift in and out of games, but he has the ability to beat his man and make things happen. With Miller out for the season, now is not the time for selling him. Makes you wonder if we knew he would go when we signed Murphy.

Any talk of he can only score pens and has not played well recently is bollocks. You still need to score pens (plus he has scored a few from open play) and the whole team has played poor lately. We will miss him. I can guarantee that. When we miss a crucial pen or have to play Williams out on the wing people may suddenly realise.

Blackman's been the top performer and most influential player for me this term. So yes, losing him will hurt us.

Not a clue on that bit. All seems a bit strange to me especially with Zaha going back to Palace on loan. Maybe it's one that won't go through. IF we were getting others in I'd be interested, but if not then we're just going backwards again. What you reckon Coops?
 
I'd be slightly disappointed if he went, but while i shouldn't be, I'm surprised by the hand wringing. The bloke gets slagged off every week on here and bm so why now is he the most important player we have?

He's playing out of position and I'd rather we have a proper winger and another striker.

We won't get them.

But that's what I'd prefer.

Which is fair.

However, many have advocated that a proper winger would be better there. And I do think that we'll get at least one of them.

A cm and a striker too is unlikely...

Agree with that. We know he doesn't get sufficiently involved in games, but I've seen enough to know he's got class. It's up to a manager to find the role and system he's best suited for.
 
Has anyone seen or can anyone link me to where it states the fee has been agreed? I've searched all over and can't find anything.

News of Palace's interest in thought to have alerted a number of other clubs to Blackman's possible availability this month, but the Eagles are hoping to win the race for the forward's signature."

I'm bemused by this notion that other clubs don't already know that ALL our players are ALWAYS available.
However, a race of several clubs for Blackman's signature should be good news for the Blades.
Well, at least it could have been if we hadn't already agreed a fee with Palace that is.

Might it not have been a good idea to turn down any initial offers and play one club off against the other?

Top scorer, plenty of assists, penalty taker, most feared player, ability to make things happen, pace, creativity etc. He might have been playing out of position, but he still made a big impact out there. Who do you think has performed better this term?

Unless the money really does represent an offer we couldn't refuse (e.g. £1.5m+) then I think it's a really poor sale. He does have flaws in his game but he can also do a lot of things that I don't see anyone else in the squad doing and we'll be much weaker without him.

I shouldn't be surprised by the criticism of him on here but I am - seems Young, Gifted and Black isn't a combination that always goes down well with Blades fans (repeating myself but a lot of the criticisms of him were also levelled at CKR and Kabba).

Let's see what happens with the money if he does go before we make any judgements but I'd be surprised if DW thinks anything other than he's been dumped on by the board here.
 
I know he hasn't gone yet, but if he does, to all those saying "it will be alright if we can replace him with someone better" I actually struggle to recall one instance in the past, say, five years or so where an outgoing player's replacement has been an improvement.

Blackman was worse than Evans (or Quinn and Williamson if we class him as a wide midfielder) and will be replaced by someone worse than him.

That is why we are where we are. Each replacement is worse than the last meaning the team and squad are ever diminishing in quality.

I'm afraid we're shit and only getting shitter, and I hate it.

I'm not necessarily saying anyone has. But, he's also been part of a very underperforming side.

I do rate him, but i very much doubt we'll get any worse with him gone. And if the right thing is done (unlikely i know) we'll potentially improve.
 
Anyone else not that bothered? I think Blackman's OK, but we soon realised that Miller is a better striker and his crossing from the wing (a primary job of a winger) is absolutely useless on his right foot! This wouldn't be a terrible bit of business IF we replace him correctly. Yes he's our top scorer, but only 5 from open play. For example, if we gave penalty taking duty to Maguire, he would be our top scorer at this stage! Don't think it's the worst thing, only on the assumption that we replace him. But it is SUFC, so can't say for certain we will....

I wouldn't necessarily say the side are under performing, just poor, but once you start to sell the better players from a poor side, you're really in the shit.

^ Those reasons are exactly why he is the best signing the club has made in a long fecking time.

News flash, the lad actually shoots and scores unlike the rest of the crap in our squad. How the hell are we suppose to score with such a shite, moronic, and heartless midfield who cannot get a decent ball up to the strikers if their life depended on it.

The only player who we have at the moment whose movement is good, runs at people and is actually exciting to watch. He has a good delivery, a good penalty....... and people just moan about im being greedy, jesus how does anyone get anywhere without being greedy. You have to be an utter retard to think taking money for him now will be better in the long term. The money will be nowhere near the estimates of millions and will go to fuck all to replace him.

My good lord the ignorance, and retarded nature of people's minds astonishes me.

I'd say on previous standards, i'm looking at harry, mcmahon, doyle, kitson and more than anyone kmac, the heartbeat of the team is underperforming. With or with blackman, we're better than most in this league. And the rest are either adequate, unproven or finding their feet.

Losing one underperforming player will make little difference.
 



In the pantheon of Sheffield United greats, Nick Blackman will hardly feature up there - but at this moment in time, he's still one of our better players and we're selling him off with less than a week of the JTW left.
As Latters has said above, and as we've seen all too well over the last few years, when you sell your better players you become worse as a team. I'm not entierely sure there's much more left to flog off?
