James McAtee

Prefer both in midfield over Norwood, McAtee carries the ball and commits defenders, ala a young Grealish, Norwood wants to play the glorious pass most of the time, then watch players ghost past him while he waves his arms around
Assuming Slimane comes in and we dont get McAtee back a midfield 3 of Slimane, Doyle and Berge wouldn't be too shabby with Baldock as RWB and a new signing like Manning as LWB.

We're here debating the possible value of Doyle, with some suggesting 20m+ (I laughed), due to the value of Trafford.

Laugh I did, but it probably isn't far from the truth as it looks like Southampton are once again raiding City for youngsters, Shea Charles (WHO), for 11m!

Leicester are apparently after Callum Doyle and they’re rumoured to have opened the bidding at 7 million so he’ll likely got for somewhere around 10 million.

Amazing isn't it, can clear 100m of youth players that have barely stepped foot into the professional game, whilst teams like Burnley, playing at the same level would struggle to get that for their whole squad.

Hoarding the best youth players in the country pays off I guess.

Nobody knows how good they are though until they play mens ball. Anyone could look great playing in that man city side with 10 world class players surrounding them
You’d be more comfortable signing the ones who’ve been on on loan and at least tasted mens football certainly you’ve at least got an idea of where their floor might be.

Some will never make it at the highest level, true, but the idea that you cannot tell how good someone is until they've done multiple seasons on loan having the shit kicked out of them (i.e. the sort of thing that happens in basically no games City play in) is in my eyes severely outdated.

Shea Charles has gone from Man City to Southampton for £10m rising to £15m with add ons plus a buy back clause. He played 15 minutes in Man City's last game and that is his only game of proper mens competitive football Is it me or has the world gone mad? The only way Southampton can have seen him play is in Man city's Under 23s how does that compare to playing at Centre Back in the Championship. It doesn't bode well for us signing Doyle who is an experienced veteran compare to Shea Charles

i think unless city have a change of heart about only wanting to sell doyle we wont see him at the lane next season i suspect city are asking 15m plus for him and we wont be paying that

If we had a chairman with sense we would that lad is a future England player he proved it last year I'd quite easily spend 10 to 15 m on him tried and tested unlike lads from Europe that might be good

Tommy Doyle will come back on loan for the season which for me is a good signing.

Mcatee won’t be coming back, which unlike most I’m honestly not too fussed about. He was overrated.

Good player don’t get me wrong but no where near good enough to deserve the MGW and Ndiaye hype we have had over the last few years.
As the season progressed McAtee became indispensible. He offered what noone else could and his goals and assists were invaluable. Couldn't disagree more but it's your opinion so fair enough.

Any truth in the Doyle to Leicester talk I’ve seen lately?
Don’t want to be negative, but I’d be very disappointed if we let him slip through our fingers.
Hope it’s just a journo putting 2 and 2 together and getting 5!

Great news this. Ormester is offering to fund the Doyle transfer. Someone call Bettis to let him know.

Seriously though, I really rate Doyle (maybe not quite as much as saying he's a future England player) and hope we get him, but wouldn't spend three quarters of our kitty on him. I think it'll be a loan or lower fee if there are no takers by the end of the window unless we get a lot of cash from somewhere.

Different Doyle pal, still from Man City but that one‘s Callum Doyle, not Tommy

City really ramp up youth recruitment in the later years of academy football around 16. They identify players who are far and away superior to those around them and bring them in..

With regards to taking a chance on city kids that Lavia went to Soton last summer and looking like leaving for best part of £50m now?

Some comments fail me 🤣 Cough up ormester

This thing about Norwood letting players past him is the biggest myth going and I keep seeing it.

Most tackles in the championship.

Myth busted.

They hoover up alot of players yes but a lot never make it Of the 24 academy players Pep has given debuts too (mainly in EFL Cup) the vast majority played only once and are now at League 1 or below clubs. Too many don't go out on loan and end up at 21, 22, 23 never having played proper football

Push the boat out n sign Doyle .He would be our main man for 10 years!
Absolutely.
Listen to his interviews.
The kid has the drive, the passion and a genuine love for the game.
He reminds me of a Paul Scholes in terms of wanting to be a footballer rather than a celebrity.

As far as City are concerned, they can't lose. They chuck money at the best prospects and hoover them up with promises of money at a young age which most other clubs can't compete with, they have them for a while, sift out the wheat from the chaff, and then sell on a good few of them for a few million each with low buy back clauses inserted in case they develop at other clubs more than they think they will, and the others they just let go. The millions they bring in from flogging the 'good prospects but not elite' to other clubs more than pays them back for the initial expense of hoovering up all the top talent at a young age. The best ones they keep. When they have the money it's a fairly easy game for them to play.

Agree

The simple economics make sense for them.

Selling one youth player for 15-20m pays for recruiting and training of another 10 or so.

If 1 or 2 make the first team ala foden. It saves like 50-100m on signing someone new.

The rest you can make self fund the academy with loan fees and smaller fees and wage contributions etc etc.

Similarly - in our recruitment. I think we’d be better putting our eggs in more than one basket with young, cheaper foreign players.

We could sign 5/6 slimane’s or traore’s and Anels. For the cost of a Brewster. You need one to be good, one to be decent and then you can absorb a couple of misses.

It works through player turnover.

You could compare the method to what Warnock fud at the Lane or what Moore did with the grunters to get them back up. You sign 6, 7 or even 8 a season, some are hits, some are shit. You let the latter walk and bring in another set. If you are dealing with players who don't cost much or are cheap with wages on short contracts you can get them in and move them on easy enough.
Eventually you have a fairly solid team with more hits in than misses.

Warnock tried it with his strikers where we would sign umpteen a season and eventually we had some decent players up top. Mind you we did have to suffer some real shite along the way before it all came together in his 5th season.

Talked about it a number of times, when chelsea won 2 titles in 3 years their net spend for those 3 years was incredibly low due to the turn over squad players
