James McAtee

Wolves have peaked, alot of people picking them to go down this season.
Would've been inclined to agree, but they've seemingly retained a top class manager. Perhaps he'll still leave if they don't sign decent new players.

Man City have done a feature on him and his time with us

great article that shows how the boys that really want it , and have the ability get where they want to be.

he was out of his depth at Luton and rightly got subbed, but in the Cardiff game, he was top class and never looked back. great loan for all concerned and I'd love to see him back for a season.

Those that think he wouldn't suit us are blind

I know Darren gets some info, but I'm unconvinced he's looped in on every conversation that the various club representatives have. Is he monitoring their phone messages and tracing their calls?!

I think any movement on Macca or Doyle would come at the end of the window. Since Pep will want to check them out in pre-season.

Agree for McAtee. I can't see them thinking Doyle is their level - but I can imagine he'll leave them late in the window on either loan/perm.

Doesn't appear to be that interested in checking out Doyle. I could see Doyle moving soon if he was left off the pre-season tour. If its a loan it will be to us, if they are selling him, I'm not sure we can outbid someone like Wolves or even Leicester - it would take some insistence from him that he wants to join us.

Our best bet would be a loan to buy deal but we would want it weighted in favour.

I reckon it's a case of get our other permanents sorted (including hopefully LCB) and see whether we have enough left in the kitty to buy Doyle outright. If the best we can do is loan him then we lose the opportunity to get Macca or one of their other prospects in for the season. I'm guessing that's a big part of the equation for us.

You've hit the nail on the head. Doyle is definitely for sale but we can't meet their valuation. If noone else comes swooping and still available at end of the window City might then be willing to be a bit more flexible.

Have you seen the buy back on the Burnley goalie. 3 times what they paid for him, so if its the same for Doyle might be worth it

The fee is not the issue as it stands, by all accounts it’s his wages. Should the relegation wage drop kick in he’d be on significantly less than he earns now. Doyle wants to play 1st team football in the PL, he likes us as a club, so the problem we have is can we offer him a contract that’s appealing to him? He probably knows he’s not going to get the same sort of money he’s on now, but should another club offer him a deal without a relegation wage drop then that becomes guaranteed income and a better option than us. Hopefully we can work something out that suits all parties

darren smith said citys valuation of doyle was suprisingly modest it was his salary and relegation clause that was the issue im pretty confident he will be back at the lane this season one way or another

If his relegation release stipulation is the main issue then it’s unlikely to change once illy contract swallows up some more money

we could throw a release clause in any package for doyle that would be low if we were to get relegated im confident with this deal hecky wants him city dont and i think the player himself wants to come back here likely to be late in the window this one

I wouldn’t be surprised if Doyle exceeded Man City’s expectations last season, if we ended up loaning him surely it would be a no brainier. Hopefully can spend a bit of the small budget on him. He will never be a world beater but a consistent for a lower placed premier league side. If Man City are touting Mcatee to European champions league sides or top half premier league sides they’re making a massive mistake imo. Did very well last season but I think it was the team/style of play that helped him a lot.

Doyle may not have the flair of McAtee but he has the midfield energy we sadly lack - my only concern is that he is another Rfooter to add to Slimane Coulibsly Norwood & Berge when really we need a Lfooter CM to keep Osborn & Fleck far away from the matchday squad

Slimane looks comfortable with either.

I wouldn't be surprised if he takes the McAtee spot, especially given the role McAtee played will probably have to change a little anyway with us stepping up.

Agree and all good reasons why O'Brien would be a very good fit

I would much rather have McAtee over Doyle. If Ndiaye leaves or misses a game through injury or suspension then we have no other creative player on the pitch. To me that is far more important than someone who just plays things very safe as we will not see much of the ball this season compared to last.

Disagree. We're desperately lacking athleticism in the middle of the park and Doyle has that in abundance. We don't have that engine in midfield and I'm worried we'll be back to starting Norwood again if we don't fill the hole Doyle has left.

We really were lucky to have both of them here at the same time last season.
