I think with Ili it’s quite simple. He’s leaving regardless of what we do.

100% the most important player to give us any chance of survival, bar none.

We set our price, suspect region £25m? If no one pays we accept he goes on a free, but he gives us one last season.

Got to face into the reality of the situation.

Why on earth would he sign a new deal when he can simply sign a pre-contract for his boyhood club in a few months?

I'm assuming we don't get very much if he leaves on a free as he's not been with us that long?

Problem is, if he signs a new contract he’s:

  • Increasing the transfer fee utd will ask for
  • Decreasing potential salary and sign on fee he’ll get compared to being a free agent

It literally makes no sense for him to sign a contract if he really does want to leave.

However saying that….

they need to try and tempt him into signing a contract with a relegation release clause where he leaves for free anyway if we go down, but becomes top earner/massive salary increase if we do stay up - hopefully this gives him more of a reason to consider a new contract

We have to nothing to lose if he really is intent on leaving

They genuinely have no idea what's going to happen. They'll tell you that themselves. Nothing has been decided by anyone. Club or player.

The line "If he leaves I believe it will be because he wants to go to his boyhood team of Marseille' sounds like spin to me.

If he leaves this summer it will because we sold him. End of.

The only reason I could see him signing a contract is for financial security and protection against injury.

At the moment he’s not earned huge money which would secure the financial futures of family for generations to come.

If we offered him say £100k a week on a 3/4 year deal with a buy out of £10m-£15m he might be tempted to go for it. His financial future would be secured with the possibility to still move on relatively easily should he wish.

Thank you for that insightful information captain obvious.

What other way is there for him to leave this summer 🤦‍♂️
According to Hal, this way...

"If he leaves I believe it will be because he wants to go to his boyhood team of Marseille."

Let's say a 20m bid comes in for him. He will miss approx 4 games for AFCON, so will play 34 (if he stays fit). That's approx 500k per game we'd potentially loose out on if he stays. It's a conundrum for our club management for sure. If you weigh up that he's reportedly on about 5k a week and cost us nothing then sell or keep we've done extremely well out of him

Not a big poster but long term reader... the whole friend of a friend thing... Pep admires Ili and is debating a move for him.

Alright they can have him as long as they give us:

1 - Doyle
2 - £10m
3 - MaCatee on loan
4 - Illy back on loan for the season (they pay his wages).

Deal?

Edit: oh and Pep has to let Kompany think he’s getting Foden for the whole window then suddenly ignore his calls on deadline day.

They have mega money to be fair
Majority owned (95%) by an American property Billionaire under McCourt Global, main director being Frank McCourt. Used to own LA Dodgers Baseball. They may start at £15million but it could well be a tester to see what we might do, in terms of reactions. They may offer a deal and our guys counter etc a bit of back and forward and we pay them £5million plus throw in Berge because we all know we don't have guys that can counter offer.
