I rate Flynn personally, I don't think he's quite as bad as people make out. .

I might have said so elsewhere, but I don't thin he's awful. He does a bit of good. I just don't think he's good enough and we will be limited (even in the third division) if we settle for players of such ability in such key positions.

He's the best we've got at the moment and deserves our support on the field. I just dont think he's good enough.

UTB

i dunno about that..
i couldn't stand matt hill at first but he won me over.. it's up to flynn really.. i sometimes think porter would make a better centre back. he is a superb header of the ball.. it is a pity he can't shoot with his head ;)
noone sticking up for macmahon i notice :D

The kid won't win with some people will he? Granted he's not a world beater, but at the end of the day he has had a hand in 1/3 of our league goals this season.

He's not a great winger at all:
Very slow for a lad of his age and build.
Rarely takes defenders on .
And as others have said he falls over/gets knocked over quite a lot (the core strength of a melted welly).

But having said all that he's not a terrible footballer either, just mediocre....
On the plus side he does have an eye for goal when he's in those positions.
(I also doubt he will be successful at a higher level. I would expect him to eventually return to lower league footy in skirtland tbh).

IMO, he is no where near the most creative player in this league (despite the stats). We have seen players at BDTBL who have created more chances in our box and looked much more dangerous than Ryan. But (from a stats point of view) these chances were either wasted or mopped up by a decent defence. Some examples of players of this ilk would be Scott Allan, Luke Freeman etc....

I would have thought that it is a priority to get in extra competition for an attacking midfielder/winger in January and not another striker - as DW seems to be looking for.

:)

So, do you rate him JD?

UTB

At this level, in his correct position, and in the appropriate XI, absolutely yes.

Agree that he needs to develop physically to play any higher (which seems unlikely), but that doesn't concern me too much. We can beat him up for what he can't do, but then there's not a player in the squad who doesn't have a glaring weakness.

I rate Flynn personally, I don't think he's quite as bad as people make out.

However, I never ever want to see him playing in the middle of the park again, DW would have been better off picking me to play there for how effective he was on Saturday.

We were absolutely hammered in the middle, and given the options, rather than Flynn I would possibly have played Cresswell there, at least he'd have put himself about and ran round a bit more being a nuisance.

He's not the quickest or most skillful winger in the league, but so what? We had O'Halloran last season and he was utter crap. However he creates things and gets into good positions, hence he has netted a few times as well as getting himself to the top of the assists chart.

I actually said DW would have been better picking our lass in midfield rather than Flynn. I was astounded at the decision to play him in central midfield to be honest. I've nothing against Flynn, but same as you, I never ever want to see him in central midfield again. He'd have been far more effective on the left in place of Williams (who was probably as bad as Flynn on satdi). Wouldn't we have been better off getting the ball wide to Flynn and Blackman to get crosses in to Porter and maybe Kitson ???? just a thought.

Flynn's had some good games this season, chipped in with goals and is up there at top of assists, but he's still developing and has patchy form even in his preferred roll. He was a fish out of water against Tranmere, I don't think anyone can argue with that.

Exactly. Flynn is the scapegoat for some cowardly, pathetic and inept decisions from Wilson. If Wilson had an ounce of tactical nouse he would never have dreamt of playing a left back on the wing and our best winger in centre mid. Pure madness. Shades of Jordan Stewart on the right wing, whilst Cotterill sat on the bench, under Blackwell.

Looks like I need to resurrect the key passes index:)

Gerr-it done owd mucker. You can use my Blades Player account if that wants :-)

I'll tell you what - when KMac was out of the side last year and Williamson played in the centre - he didn't play that well compared to his role on the right hand side of midfield. In addition to that, in any "big game" Willo went "missing"

Of the players available Saturday I would have played McA in the centre (limited but a known quantity) and used the width to gain an advantage - maybe started with Flynn but changed it later for McFazza (offers the choice to move Blackman in a central strikers role as the changes take place). I guess DW wanted to see how Flynn might cope in a central role - but experimenting with a game against the league leaders, with apparently no plan B, WTF?

Without significant changes (by that I mean just one or two new players in during the JTW to address the obvious shortcomings - Pigs did this with Antonio when the other lad, Marshall, went back to his parent club) then I can see us finishing on or around 5th / 6th and losing out in the PO semis cos we cannot create enough chances / score enough goals - we can only contain.

By contrast our loan signings have been decidedly mediocre at best this season. Cofie & Gallagher couldn't uproot a sappling between them - never mind any trees.

Looks like I need to resurrect the key passes index:)

As it's mainly Flynn who's splitting opinions, how about a description of each of his assists? Maybe that could help us decide if his creativity is underrated or if he's in any way 'lucky' to have so many?

What a ridiculous, patronising statement. Your sarcasm is completely misplaced. You are comparing Paul Ifill to Messi and Ronaldo??

I'm not being sarcastic and nor am I comparing Ifill to Ronaldo. My statement is a fair one.

When you have to start a sentence with "When you take away his goals and assists..." then you are obviously looking for a reason to criticise a player who is clearly contributing a lot to the team, presumably because you have some kind of agenda against him. If you took away Keith Edwards goals, he contributed diddly to the team, something which he freely admits himself. But that's the point - he DID contribute, because he scored all of those goals. Why are you wanting to take away the goals scored and created by Ifill to show that he contributed nothing, when in the real world, he did contribute an awful lot!?

It's this I despair at. Looking for reasons to beat up our own players. Gets on my tits. "If you take away..." - well no actually, you CAN'T take away the fact that Ryan Flynn has created more goals than anyone in the division so far this term. And why would you want to?

My point about him being a third division player is that to get out of the third division, you need most of your players to be capable of playing above that level. Flynn isn't.

My bet is that (no dig intended here) you're London based fan who doesn't get to many games, and rely on such stats for your info?

Well I disagree with you. I would say that Flynn is capable of playing in the Championship, but we can't really prove or disprove these points so I won't dwell on it. However, let me address your point about my watching games.

This season alone, I have attended six away matches and have watched four games on highly dubious internet streams (two home, two away). We've played 22 league games this season, so really, I have seen no fewer games than your average season ticket holder that doesn't go to away matches.

I also subscribe to BladesPlayer, so not only do I get to listen to the games that I can't see, I can watch highlights and indeed full games if I choose to. I don't like your suggestion that just because I live in London, my opinion is somehow worth less than yours.

The constant Flynn bashing is really starting to grind my gears. I know what his weaknesses are and I agree with everyone that points them out. The difference is I can also see what he brings to the team and at this level, it's okay. He's doing a good job, get off his case. If he can't cut it in the Championship, we can move him on, but we have to get there first.

The Flynn knocking and the "If you take away ..." reminds me of this famous quote:

"All right, but apart from the sanitation, medicine, education, wine, public order, irrigation, roads, the fresh water system and public health, what have the Romans ever done for us?"

You didn't need to convince me that you've seen enough - I just wondered.

I don't rate him very highly, you do. I think his limitations could cost us automatic promotion, and that scares me to death. I don't know why you get so upset about that, but whatever..........

I think his limitations could cost us automatic promotion, and that scares me to death.

How's that? Is he keeping a better player out of the side?

Personally I worry more about McMahon and his complete refusal to support his winger (while Westlake sits on the bench).

Oh FFS..I've said so several times, no! Does that make him good enough or something?

I think we need a replacement, because I can't see the current side getting automatic.

As it seems sharing opinions rates nothing as compared to an assist table, maybe Foxy should just close down the discussion board and replace it with a league table....:)

I remember Chief got some stick on BU for not jumping when he won his flick ons.

What was even more amusing, is the fact that a number absolutely insisted that the only reason he got anywhere near the squad is that someone got a cut of his appearance money.

I remember having an argument with someone who insisted he offered nothing and was merely someone's Mrs' shopping fund.

The same person said I was stupid for thinking we'd ever get anywhere near promoted under that manager... A little later, the day it was confirmed, he was in the car park denying all knowledge of his stance.

I don't "rate him very highly" though- I can just see what he brings to the team, whilst also being able to see his limitations. I don't see everything in black and white extremes like some on here.

The reason I'm getting "upset" is because this thread is just the latest in a long and growing line of digs at Flynn, who is contributing more to our success this season than the majority of our squad. I can't understand why people are queuing up to batter the poor lad and I'm just sticking up for him.

Rhetorical question. :)

But I do find it unfathomable that you think he's costing us promotion. That's an incredibly strong statement given our multitude of other flawed players.

I get very frustrated with those who are determined to have a scapegoat, those who are determined to hate everthing about Sheffield United. There are several around. I hope that because I don't paint everything as rosey, I can tackle such clear hatred without being brushed off as "a clapper". Having that stance means that I will also highlight what I believe is wrong with the club, on and off the field. Sometimes that aligns be with "the slashers".

It's up to you to see the difference,....... or not:)

Sigh............

Actually, he's not just costing us promotion, he's responsible for relegation from the premiership and the huge debt we owe McCabe. That's clearly what I'm saying.

Can't believe that I am sharing the same opinion as Alco!
Flynn is an ordinary player that struggles to deliver a decent cross more times than not, falls down a lot, flatters to deceive and generally is nothing more than a Division Three player - he would struggle in the Championship!

For the league we find outselves in and the restrictions we are under, he is an ok player.
Tops the assists charts in the league (not just for SUFC) and has popped up with a few goals.

He obviously has flaws, hence why he is playing at this level.

But overall, he is not a main concern in our team to be honest. He is good enough to help us achieve our goal in promotion though.
One thing I think we can all agree on though, he is not a centre midfielder.

For what it is worth too, I am also a believer he couldn't hack it in the league above.

Oh dear. If you had bothered to read my earlier post you would see I was actually sticking up for Flynn. He is the most creative player in the team. You have just thrown your time out of the pram and are getting a bit stroppy with anyone that criticises your favourite player. There's no need to get defensive either. All this talk of internet game watching does not make up for you being an out of touch London dweller (that is originally from Derbyshire!?).

I never said owt about wanting to take away goals. Keith Edwards scored a lot by the way. Ifill contributed a lot that season. Both were characters that divided plans because their performances were often sub standard. However, they scored or created. Is that enough? To some yes, to others no. That is the debate you're having with alco in a nut shell. I was just trying to highlight it that's all. I might not have phrased it the best way, but your overly sensitive and sarcastic hysteria makes you look like a little girl that has just been told her Barbie is ugly.

I suppose, by your thinking, that K Mac is rubbish. He nevers scores and rarely assists goals. So his contribution must be naff all.

generally is nothing more than a Division Three player - he would struggle in the Championship!

Should be ok then given where we are. Lets face it the days where we can go to the top table to get anyone are long gone (except loans or shite) If someone can think of a player available for nowt better then please forward his name to the club.(other than Willo)

just getting back to blackman bergen.. he has a tendency to cut inside because he is a left footed player on the right wing.. personally i don't like wingers being on the wrong side.. the fullback always knows where you are going to go
