I was pretty damned shocked myself SP.
K Mac not even on the list!!
heh heh.. we had this argument last year about quinn.. KMac is the one that did the pass before.. (the killer pass that gives flynn the chance to scuff it into the middle).. they don't count that

Not at all surprised to be honest. What's surprising is the attitude a lot of fans have towards him - but then, with Monty and Quinny gone its natural that another important member of the team would become a target.

Flynn is hard-working, tidy on the ball, has an eye for goal, and delivers a decent cross more often than not. But because he frequently cuts inside onto his natural foot and isn't a physically strong player, that isn't good enough.

Tidy on the ball !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! did you watch the Tranmere game? he was utter bobbar, couldn't control a damp cap.

Players have off-games. I'm not going to let one game where he's played in an unfamiliar position override what he's contributed across the season as a whole. Particularly when the whole midfield had stinkers.

Flynny's the new Quinny (but gives up a little less).

Flynn has critics, but has his share of fans as well. :)

In general I think there's a way to make most players work, as long as they have some minimum ability.

Flynn is usually a neat and technically good player who works hard and helps out his full back well. His lack of athleticism is his weakness. In our current prefered front six I think he can do ok, but it would help him if he was backed up by an athletic left back who was good at overlapping and crossing with his left foot. This would give us more width, while now Flynn usually either cuts in or passes it back to Hill or Doyle.

Although Blackman on the other side is more of a dribbler he also likes to cut inside, rather than go for the byline. From an attacking perspective it would also help him if he was backed up by an overlapping full back (Westlake rather than McMahon). This could mean that we'd have decent width on both sides which would give the opposition a lot more space to cover. I believe that a well working right side would also help Flynn on the left hand side, and consequently also open up more space for McDonald as well.

Rather than discussing for ever about whether a player is good enough at the current level, we should look more at how we can compose a balanced team where players' attributes complement eachother and where their good qualities are being used to maximum effect.

Quinny was targeted for unknown reasons. Flynn is targeted because he's not very good.,

He's a trier and it ends there. Slow, weak, nesh, and not actullay very tricky either. We really need to find a replacement in this key position.

Sadly, you can't polish a turd.

Rubbish. Most creative player in the division at present and he's notched a few times as well. I really don't get what extra people want from him. He's slightly built so he gets pushed over now and then. If he added strength to his game, he'd be off in January.

Wow, I couldn't disagree more. That's football.

:)

Edit - let's hold this thought and see where Ryan Flynn is playing football in 5 or 6 years time. If he's managed more than one season above the third division, I will bare my arse on the town hall steps.

Has Deadbat seen this? He is super critical at times, but this shows that Flynn has been our most creative player.

Hmmm. Lies, damn lies and statistics. I've never needed a scapegoat, and I don't now. But Ryan Flynn is a weak link in an important position.

He is the most creative player in the team. Fact! Creative as in creating the most goals. He has the highest assists. Surprised anyone would argue with that.

For what it is worth, I don not rate him that highly. There's a reason why he never got as look in last year. Willo or Quinn would be a much better option. He is lightweight and nesh. However he is the best we've got. I am disappointed we're relying on such an average player to create things. However this is the case. And he has been the most creative player. You might not rate him, but the evidence is pretty clear!

fans naturally 'target' players who they perceive as not good enough or weak links in the team.. it isn't a coordinated conspiracy.. everyone knows who the poorest performing players are in the current first 11 and that is flynn, porter and macmahon.. if they up their game then they will lose the tag very quickly
as for flynn he'd be more rated if he 1. wasn't so nesh.. 2. could anticipate the flight of a bouncing ball and 3. would stop cutting inside all the time..
these statistics are misleading.. it is KMac who initiates most of the cutting edge moves.. so he doesnt' do the 'final' pass.. perhaps they should start counting the 'first' pass of the move as well.. saturday proved for anyone who is still in doubt (is there anyone?) how much macdonald means to the team

Well, the pure facts are the pure facts - but it takes about 2 simple passes onto a decent finisher to move you from mid table to the top of that assist league.

Anyway, I think most (including us) are in agreement. He IS the best we've got there - but that's another story. For all his building him up, my mortgage would go on the left wing being the position that Wilson would most love to fill, and when he does we'll not see a lot of Ryan.

As I've said elsewhere, if he makes a career above the third division I'll be very suprised.

i think if it hits you on the back of the head and someone scores it is an assist.. :D

agree with super_pig and alcoblade to an extent. Stats can be misleading. Looking at Paul Ifill's stats in 05/06 you would think he was one of the players of year. Yet take away his goals and assists and he was awful. But that statement sounds contradictory, as he helped us to win games. Flynn has helped us to win games and we would not be where we are now without him. Whether or not we could find someone better and if we need someone to put the win up him (and Blackman) are different matters. An injection of pace and creativity out wide, whether as competition for places or direct replacement, would be very healthy. Oh and I doubt Flynn will play higher than this level. If he bulked up, grew in confidence (therefore ran at his man a bit more) and got stuck in he may make lower leve Championship. Some big if's there mind.

I think there is a perception problem with Flynn.

He spent last season with us and couldn't get a regular start on either wing because he wasn't good enough to displace either Williamson or Quinn. When he did get in, the team sufferred as a result. As such (in a similar vein to our friend Steve Faulkener) he has been judged accordingly.
He is now part of a team that isn't nearly as good as last season and he is a "key" member of that team. He isn't the worst player in the side but he isn't very good (he would have played a lot more last season if he had been) compared to what he has replaced. As the team weakens the players who aren't as good as the players they replace will, inevitably, come in for some stick.

Playing him in central midfield to replace the best player in the team, in a role he is completely unsuitable for, will do him no favours.

I'm 100% with Alco on this though, I can't see him playing regularly at a higher level than this.

That's one of your more retarded statements, Olle. By your standards, that's really going some.

See that Messi? Take away his goals and his assists and he does fuck all. Same for Ronaldo. Both bobbins.

I don't care where he's playing football in five years time. This year he's playing in League One and he's proving to be the most creative player there. And last time I checked, we're in League One. You can fill in the blanks yourself.

I don't buy this argument about assists not being much of measure of creativity, either. "Oh, you can have it bounce off your arse and it counts as an assist". Well, yeah - if it hadn't banged off your arse, that chance wouldn't have come about, so obviously it's an assist. And if the player hadn't got into a good position, it wouldn't have banged off their arse so the chance wouldn't have come about. If it's so easy to get assists, why hasn't anyone got more than "rubbish" Ryan?

I really despair sometimes.

I really despair sometimes.

You despair because some fans don't rate Ryan Flynn? Seriously fella........

My point about him being a third division player is that to get out of the third division, you need most of your players to be capable of playing above that level. Flynn isn't.

My bet is that (no dig intended here) you're London based fan who doesn't get to many games, and rely on such stats for your info?

I know what I see every week - a player who's short of what we need in a key position.

The defence would like present exhibit A: Sheffield Wednesday.

Case closed.

:)

I rate Flynn personally, I don't think he's quite as bad as people make out.

However, I never ever want to see him playing in the middle of the park again, DW would have been better off picking me to play there for how effective he was on Saturday.

We were absolutely hammered in the middle, and given the options, rather than Flynn I would possibly have played Cresswell there, at least he'd have put himself about and ran round a bit more being a nuisance.

He's not the quickest or most skillful winger in the league, but so what? We had O'Halloran last season and he was utter crap. However he creates things and gets into good positions, hence he has netted a few times as well as getting himself to the top of the assists chart.

Nice one. What a ridiculous, patronising statement. Your sarcasm is completely misplaced. You are comparing Paul Ifill to Messi and Ronaldo?? Messi and Ronaldo generally cause the oppostion all sorts of problems and play well, in addition to their goals. Paul Ifill played 30 games that season and got 9 goals and 5 assists. His form was generally awful (other than the goals). So in at least half of the games he did naff all. However his goals and assists were a significant contribution that season. I should not have to s-p-e-l-l this stuff out for people (though knowing you, it is hardly expected).

Disagree with that completely. If Porter won 99 headers on the trot, he'd get battered for losing the 100th. Never known a player who wins so many headers get so consistently criticised for not winning them.

Many fans make their minds up about a player and refuse to change it whatever happens. Bit like Keith Edwards who hated Kabba so could never give him any credit but loved Webber so could never criticise him.

There's a lot of truth in that. I'll be very happy to change my mind about Flynn though.
