We have never lost a league game at home to Rochdale, Exeter, Bradford Park Avenue or Stockport
Nor Hereford either, but all four league games, H and A against them ended in draws, so could have been worse.
Just went on teams we've played at least 10 times/5 seasons

We've never won at Bristol Rovers in the league. That's one I didn't know

Aye, that's the one I was thinking of, cheers.

As I recall they beat us with one of those long range goals that we seemed to concede with alarming regularity in that era.

I remember the game, and I half remembered the goal. Looking at it here - especially the slow motion replay - it looks like it takes a slight deflection off someone (Collins?); that's an ancient mystery solved.

Goal difference, over a long period of time is a very good indicator of how good or bad you are. The below is our 'league'. 20 teams we've played in the league at least 10 times and have a GD within 5 and minus 5 (side note, our GD against Wednesday is +12)

Despite the fact I'd never heard of them till half an hour ago I am now a huge Middlesbrough Ironopolis fan.

Though they were something of a bogey team

There are some real oddities once you start digging into this. Our failure to ever win a league game at Bristol Rovers was called out by Carlton Blade earlier but it's one of a number like that:

Swindon Town: won 13/17 at home, lost 8/17 away
Lincoln City: won 8/10 at home, lost 6/10 away
Newcastle United: won 37/59 at home, lost 34/59 away
Bolton Wanderers: won 35/57 at home, lost 35/57 away.

Burnley have only won 5 of the 57 league games they've played against us at the Lane but back in Burnley they've won 33/56.

The domination we have over Peterborough is a bit ridiculous. Played the 14 times in 40 years. Won 10, drawn 1 only lost 3. Average score 2.07 - 0.71

Preston are the team we've played most since I started my website in 2014. 13 times we will have played them in 9 years by the end of the season
My first thought was Preston, over the last 20 years we must have played them the most.

Nor Hereford either, but all four league games, H and A against them ended in draws, so could have been worse.
They don't exist anymore of course.

The only team still in existence we've played in the league and not beaten is Cambridge.

We've spent 15 of the last 20 seasons in the same division as Preston. The only time we've been apart are our three Premier League seasons and when they finally beat their play-off curse in 2015 allowing them to get back to the Championship two seasons before we did. Nobody else will come close at a guess. Bristol City at 12/20 is probably up there.

Millwall must be close too? Adding in a couple of games against them in the cup we’ve played them 23 times in the last 20 years.

I've done the maths. Over the last 20 seasons:
Preston 15
Coventry 14
Reading 11
Cardiff , Millwall , Watford, QPR, Bristol City , all on 10.

We've played 85 teams in that period. Least is Wimbledon (old) , Wycombe, Exeter, Oxford, AFC Wimbledon, Bristol Rovers and Northampton on 1 season

Of clubs who have been in the league in those 20 years, we haven't played in the league Cambridge* , Chester, Macclesfield*, Barrow, Torquay*, Darlington, Cheltenham, Barnet*, Sutton, Dagenham, Salford, Aldershot, Hereford, Kidderminster, Grimsby ,Accrington, Morecambe , Lincoln, Boston* , Rushden, York, Mansfield*,, Halifax, Wrexham* , Newport, Forest Green. Harrogate, Scarborough.

* = played in the cup.

First team I thought of was Preston. Gonna be some mainstay in the Championship - them or Millwall.
Ipswich and Derby will have been up there till they dropped.

Random Stats Question:

Which team or teams have we played the most in the League over, say, the last 5 years, 10 years, 20 years, etc?

(Is there any relatively quick way of finding this out. I tried 11v11, it looks like all the info is on there but not in any readily usable format.)

Here you go.

There's a drop down box for "results since". You can therefore do 5, 10, 15 years etc.

It's not full as only shows 49 games v pigs for example, but modern football wise, it's there.

Just do what everyone did before Siri.

Last time we played these teams in competitive games:

Cambridge - FA Cup 2013-14, League 1978-9
Chester: never played the current phoenix club. Last played the defunct Chester in 1988-9 in the league and the Sherpa Vans (what the Papa Johns was called then)
Macclesfield - League Cup 2003-4. Never played them in the league, and now never will.
Barrow: FA Cup 1955-6. Never played them in the league.
Torquay: FA Cup 2011-12. Last played in league 1981-2
Darlington: never played the current Phoenix club. Last played the defunct Darlington FC in League Cup in 2001-2 and in the league in 1981-2
Cheltenham: FA Cup 2002-3. Never played in league.
Barnet: FA Cup 2018-9. Never played in league.
Aldershot: never played the current phoenix club. Last played the defunct Aldershot in 1988-9 in the league
Hereford: never played the current phoenix club. Last played the defunct Hereford United in league 1981-2
Grimsby: last played in Checkatrade Trophy in 2016-7. Last played in league 2002-3 ,
Morecambe: League Cup 2015-16. Never played in league.
Lincoln: League Cup 2000-1. Last played in league 1983-4
Boston: League Cup 2005-6. Never played in league, though have also played in FA Cup (1982-3)
Rushden: FA Cup 1999-2000. Never played in league., and never will.
York: League Cup 2002-3. Last played in league 1981-2.
Mansfield: League Cup 2014-15. Last played in league 1988-9
Halifax: never played current phoenix club. Last played defunct Halifax Town in league 1981-2
Wrexham: FA Cup 2022-3. Last played in league 1982-3
Newport: a weird one. We last played them in 1983-4 in the league. They went out of business in 1989, but the phoenix club, which we have never played, claims to be a continuation of that team (unlike the other phoenix clubs)
Scarborough: never played current phoenix club. Last played defunct Scarborough in FA Cup in 1889-90. Played them in Yorkshire and Humberside Cup in 1988-9 too.

We have never played Sutton, Accrington Stanley, Dagenham, Salford, Forest Green, Harrogate or Kidderminster. We did play the original Accrington in a Test Match (like today's playoffs) in 1892-3.

There's also Stockport, who have been in the league in the last 20 seasons but who we have not played in the league since 2001-2. We last played them in the league cup in 2004-5.

I completely forgot about Coventry. Easily done, I suppose.

In the next three weeks Blackburn will be really cementing their place at the top of our ‘most played’ table.
