I need an answer ? if he goes we have no experience up top and with new young strikers we need it.

This is it really, if he was on a low wage, I'd be happy for him to stay.

I would second that. We cant afford to carry 30-something substitutes on five figure salaries anymore though.

Shame, always gives his best Cressy. Would do a good job for anyone in League One.

He gives his best, but he's too old and too slow, can't last 90 mins effectively, I still can't believe we offered him 3 years when we did, Beckham didn't even get a 3 year contract at the same age!!

What he said

we need experience and if he goes we will have none at all, surely Scunny don't pay big wages and they are sniffing.

He's got a year left on his contract and probably knows he wont get another at the end of the season. If Scunny offer him first team football and a two year deal on half the salary it would make sense for him to listen to it.

As for experience.....we had loads of experience up front last season and all of the goals were scored by the youngest striker. Nothing against Cressy, hes a good lad. I just dont see enough reasons to keep him.

Youngest yes but still experienced and knew the team already, we have 3 strikers new to the side and 1 that just isn't good enough.

What scunny pay in wages isn't really relevant, they might offer him a 2 year deal.

This issue is what we pay him for the remaining 12 months of his contract.

It's not really relevant in our situation though is it david? We cant currently justify paying someone 500k a year simply because they are experienced. We're a third division side working with a reduced budget and currently find ourselves short of players in two other positions. The younger forwards will just have to get experience wont they?

IF we do, depends on the nature of the deal but your point is a valid one. Are you suggesting that we will likely have to pay up part of his contract and release him? Seems plausable given the unlikely possiblity that Scunthorpe can offer him a big contract.

if its the difference between league 1 and championship football i think it is. If we lose cresswell the 4 we have left is not enough.

If he is the difference between League 1 and Championship football we would have gone up last season. As much As I like Cresswell I cant see why you're panicking about this. He will spend most of his time on the bench this season if he stays.

no if we would have kept ched we would of gone up, but i am sure ched benefited from cressy being his strike partner he creates a good amount of chances for us.

why would it be ?? We have no experience up front without him, sorry but were we all not praying for him to be fit in the playoff games??

Yes and mainly because we had no strikers.

I'm sure he would feel that way. I'm not saying he isnt a decent player or isnt experienced or that we couldn't use a bit of experience.....but the fact is he's probably on enormous wages at this level david. Having a bit of old nous does not justify being able to reject offers for him. If the other forwards we have cant score goals without Cresswell alongside then we haven't bought a good enough calibre of player and will struggle to do well anyway!

Finances dictate.

No, not at all. He had shown all season he was not up to it. Porter (although far from ideal) was a better bet, so was Ironside who would have been a big risk but couldn't possibly have played worse than Cresswell did in the final. Wilson caused his own problems by signing Hoskins and O'Halloran, had he brought in the right player(s) we would have gone up.

Slightly unfair. Hoskins was a ready made replacement for Ched, unfortunately a double hernia rendered him near useless.

Cresswell is on 12k a week with add ons. There are strikers who are better than him by miles in the premier league who don't earn that.

If you want to talk about experience, is this in playing time? because I don't see anything he has done in his career which brings anything to the party to help us... Leeds, Preston? Just what has he ever done? At Stoke he played left wing and just suited their direct style.

So tell me why you want to keep hi?

If we'd stuck with Cresswell & Porter up front we would struggle to finish top half. Cofie & Blackman sound far more promising (a bit of pace at last!). We need to get rid of high earners who don't justify their wages.

DP, last week you started the Monty v Kitson thread and asked the following:

"i just wondered if monty was to leave could his wages be used on a better quality player."

Well this is exactly the same. Too much is going out in wages to these players to make them sustainable at this level and there are cheaper/better options out there.
Once we have these players off the books and the disasterous summer of '10 (Hoofy's Revenge) is gone from the accounts then we might stand a chance of balancing the books and being a stronger club.
Imagine buying your house for a couple of hundred grand at the top of the market and now finding out it's worth 150k but you're still shelling out a fortune on the mortgage. That's bad, and this is the same (aside from the fact that us being a bit shit and a couple of divisions lower than we'd like is nowhere near as bad as losing your house obviously).

No - we'd be in a real estate in that case.
