How do you rate him?

One of the best, and most underrated footballers we have had for years. Just a shame that after the loyalty, dedication and effort he has put in over the years is constantly rewarded by blatant abuse.

Monty should be sold or released.

Warnock put him on the transfer list (twice) and he still couldn't attract a buyer.

Being released is more likely than anything else especially now Millwall are not bothered about signing him.

He should be sold mainly because he will still be on Championship wages which will be far too high for a player of his ability. Talking of ability whilst a lot of people can get fit enough to run for 90mins that is not really enough, in a Warnock, Blackwell or Adams team he could get away with having very limited technical ability to a certain extent but is shown up for what he is in a passing team. Can't fault his commitment and work rate but the guy can't pass, can't shoot straight, is not big enough to be any use in the air, makes shocking decisions all the time, is always out of position, all in all he is next to useless. I know he has played at the highest level but at league one he is still playing above his level so yeah I do feel a little bit sorry for him too. Says it all when we never hear of a transfer bid for him, seems to interest clubs but when they look closer they see what most of us see and walk away.

You need to add "is the toughest opponent Viera ever faced", "Is a great tackler" and "can't pass for toffee". Oh, and "needs a thread a day dedicating to himself every day for eternity". I selected all the others though.

UTB

Seems to me the poll says that we feel sorry for him but he should be sold

I love him, I think he deserves a testimonial, I feel sorry for him because of all the flack he takes, I think he deserves a testimonial (with proceeds going to charity) and I think he should be sold.

We need more of these threads about Monty.

I think that sums up the mood perfectly. He's not disliked as a person because he clearly puts so much effort in, but his qualities as a player aren't what we are looking for these days.

What Brownie said. I can't believe how small minded some of our fans are.

This poll is nothing more than disgraceful personal abuse.

Always nice to see I'm a sheep, with my four choices most popular.

Feel sorry for him but want him sold or (more likely) released. However if he doesn't leave soon we should definitely throw eggs at him :)

This poll is nothing more than disgraceful personal abuse.

Why is it?

Have you seen my 3 answers? I started the poll and I:

  • Feel sorry for him
  • Think he should get a testimonial
  • Should be sold (purely for footballing reasons!)
I'm part of the sunshine band me!! You can't slag Monty off if you sit near me.

See the results. The most popular answers are "Feel sorry for him", "Should be sold" (which is, financially the best thing we could do right now), and "Think he should get a testimonial".

Even "Love him" has a higher score than "Hate him".

People get guns shot at them for a lot less money than he gets.

Why should we feel sorry for him because he gets some justified stick for being a poor footballer?

Never rated him as a footballer - I just don't get what he brings to the team and never have. I think he has basically built a career out of once marking Lee Clark out of a game at Fulham!

Very limited ability wise, runs around a lot (or did earlier in his career), wins the ball then gives it straight back to the opposition, wins it, gives it back etc. Don't think he should receive the abuse he gets though, as its not his fault that dispite his limitations he has kept being offered new contracts by the club.

Its way beyond the time he should have been moved on though, but obviously his wages are a stumbling block to that happening. That said, I do think he deserves a testimonial purely down to the length of time he has been at the club.

I have always liked Nick Montgomery, he has given 100% for the club throughout his time here. But his limitations as a footballer are now plain to see, and his cost in terms of wage bill now outweigh his use to this squad.

In Warnock's and Blackwell's teams, he fit in well, because the way we set up needed more direct balls to the wings and forwards and if it came back quickly with the opposition in midfield we needed a ball winner. In general we were up against better passing teams especially in the prem and we needed him as someone to disrupt other teams' pattern of play.

He was IMO an excellent ball winner and harrier of opposing midfields and won the ball through pressure on a lot of occassions, personally I think that is undeniable.

What's happened recently though is he's probably lost half a yard of pace, which means his effectiveness in closing down has lessened and he's therefore won us the ball less. Plus we now play a style which is totally unsuitable to him, we need all players to be at least ok on the ball, control it and find someone else, and he simply cannot do this to aid the shape of the team. When he played near the end of last year the problems in our pattern of play were undeniable with him in the team, the contrast to a Macca/Doyle midfield was stark.

So Monty - a great servant to our club, the abuse he receives is totally unmerited, but he is not useful in the current squad.

He wasn't and isn't a ball-winner. He was and is a ball-loser. He occasionally deprives the opposition of the ball on a strictly temporary basis, though far more frequently he is left chasing shadows by players with quicker brains and more skilful feet (the vast majority of opposition midfielders, even at League One level). Play then restarts with a throw-in, corner or, far too often, a dangerous free-kick or penalty to the opposition. On the odd occasion he wins clean possession he can be relied upon to give it away immediately.

Undeniable.

Of course, abuse is unjustifiable and counter-productive,, but then again so is the employment of a non-footballer at a wage infinitely disproportionate to his [lack of] ability.

That would be "pole". Not to be confused with an eastern European person

I know :) but you had the intellect to realise that it was just my little pun and not a grammatical faux pas.

Half expected Broomers to sweep me up on that one first - who would of thought that?

They reckon that 3 clubs are after him, including judas warnock at that strange club, so he can't be as bad as some of you make out!

Millwall have already said they don't want him, Burnley or the scum then or an agent doing a bit of fishing.

should be sold imo but only because he is on to high a wage, nothing against apart from the fact he can't pass a ball other than that seems a decent lad.

bloody hell 31 have voted testimonial, more money spent he gets enough wages as it is.
