Where do they get these linesmen from? Honestly there are some decisions that are difficult then there are ones like this.

Another absolute shocker that could have cost us from the awful officials that somehow get to Championship level.

I went to Coventry at home and the linesman was either unable or unwilling to be on the last defender.

He pointed to Lowe, who is just missing from the shot I think, but Lowe was a lot higher up than JLT.

Hecky thinks it was onside.

We never really got a replay (on tv) but I'm sure there was someone behind JLT who might have been playing him on.

He was offside by a fair margin. The linesman on the other hand was well behind play and had no fucking clue.

I'd be angry but it's standard officiating these days at this level.

As pointed out by me and other poster's in another thread the similarities with the striped jerseys and black shorts helped no one including the linesman in this case, although in the still above he looks offside

And this why I love, and I mean, fkin love VAR. Well, maybe not love. But when it works in our favor then 👍. Otherwise hell no.

With VAR you get the other extreme of linesmen doing nothing other than flagging for throws.

Trouble is some of officials are too old for this, can't keep up with the pace of younger player's. He was definitely too old to be a linesman

Linesmans got to be the best job in the world. Very decent wage, all expenses paid to waddle up and down half a pitch in a straight line and contribute absolutely fuck all. Don’t even flag for throw ins until after the ref has pointed. No accountability for any offside decisions at all.

In fact, why do games with VAR even need linos? They dont flag offsides up until after the phase of play has finished, in which case the VAR broom cupboard can tell the ref on his earpiece within 10 seconds.

Their entire duties in the Premier League now appears to be checking the nets aren’t sagging before kick offs.

As we know they don't check to see if hawkeye is even fucking switched on.

It was closer than that original image makes it look. I thought it was off, but the bloke sat next to me, nearly in line, thought it was on. This is from SUTV, the ball's already left their player's foot. I'd still say offside, but it's not by miles. And give me this every day of the week and twice on Sundays rather than fucking VAR.

It's at least a yard offside.

How can you tell? All the images I've seen the ball has already been passed. He's a yard offside half a second later, but at the time it was close. And I thought the officials are meant to give the benefit of any doubt to attackers. I still think he's off, but it's nowhere near as bad as it looks from some angles.

Just watched it again on ITV. At least a yard offside.

Probably doesn't care when they missed! It retains credit for Wes making a save. If they'd scored I bet he'd be forensically all over it!

He's already said we conceded against Blackpool due to the ref, which isn't unfair given it was our throw, not theirs and it was a foul on the corner. Also he pointed out Wigan's goal was offside, which it was, though Wes should have done better.

Despite our lofty position, we've weathered some bad calls whereas indo remember others getting them in their favour. Burnley beating Rotherham late on is one, where on one hand they could have been reduced to ten men and on the other, their winner came from a throw in that should have been Rotherham's.

It would be interesting to analyse the goals conceded and see how many were legit, how many were actual errors and how many were just good play.

Now you being a Blades fan you should be used to idiotic decisions either by match officials or the guys in the ivory towers in London mate. It is all part of being a Blade pal. It makes it more interesting .You see normal rules do not apply to us ,we have our own rules that are thrust upon us like having to accept decisions like the West Ham ruling that allowed them to stay in the top flight even though they were playing two players that were not theirs which cost us our top table seat. Or having a penalty awarded against us because our defender THOUGHT about fouling that nice mister Gerrard which gave them a share of the points. Or having a goal chalk off at Villa because the refs watch was not working even though every one knew it had gone in which kept villa up at the expense of another "LITTLE" club . It makes it a lot more interesting dont you think? Being a Blade you never know whats going to happen next ,we have to dance to the tune of idiots who word is final .ENJOY .

You've forgotten (no) Hans segars cheating to give Everton victory in 1993/94 season to send united down or the fact that united are the only team to get relegated (198081) with a plus goal difference

It's crazy, they are still called Assistant referees and are fully qualified Refs in their own right.
Everyone realises that Refs need help in the modern game (hence VAR), these guys are perfectly positioned and qualified to do this.
For some reason their responsibilities seem to being eroded more and more, it makes no sense. Perhaps rather than going the VAR route, the EFL should concentrate on giving the linos more responsibility.

Who would want to be an assistant referee though, all they get is stick from one set of fans or the other.

With offside you need one eyeball to be looking at the attackers foot/ball contact, breaking, while the other eye on the receiving player - at the same time. The two events could be several yards apart, yet you need to be able to see both at once.
I know I can't do it.

Totally agree. People are looking at a still of something which happened at high speed and saying it's outrageous that the Assistant got it wrong and calling him a twat. Even with the still, it's extremely tight (bearing in mind all of the stills are taken after the ball left the player's boot). No human being seeing that once, in real time, with no stills and no replays, could possibly say definitively that it was onside or offside.

It's one of those where they just have to make a call, and as football fans we have to accept that tight decisions are going to involve a bit of guesswork, and will sometimes be wrong. It's either that or have VAR, which in my view ruins the game. I'd rather accept there's unavoidably a small degree of human error involved, and get on with it.
