Lowton to Villa £3m

All this talk of inevitability, economics and it's football is bollocks. Who said he wanted to leave?? The lad is 23, 2 years left on a deal and been with us since he was 9. He clearly loves SUFC and perhaps he was happy doing (at least) another year with us. We could have flat right turned down the bid. Sorry Villa, he is not for sale. Our talented young and home grown assest is not available. I used to laugh when Beighton used to say 'same owd, same owd ..... we tried to keep him BUT ..... we tried to sign a few BUT' but it is actually the case. Next thing it will be his pesky agent that is to blame.

I understand the economics of football perfectly well. If Lowton had a year left on his deal, was 25/26 and approaching a key time in his career, clearly going nowhere with SUFC, on big wages, we'd been opffered a deal we could not refuse (e.g. £6m-£8m for Kyle Naughton), had not been at the club since he was 9, was not born in Chesterfield and still had all his mates and family in the area etc then I could probably understand this. I really do see it as unforgivable.

The other thing that makes me laugh is this naive attitude that some of the cash will be reinvested. We all know from experience that Wilson will see none of it. This is not about a case of Lowton vs McDonald signing a new deal. I doubt very much it will make any difference.
Dark, dark times ahead.

You'd better have a taste of this then Olle, ;)

Perhaps I should listen to the people on here and accept a big dose of mediocrity. I tried it this morning. A large sprinkling of mediocrity with my corn flakes this morning, was hard to swallow as I looked at Huighbury's analysis of key passes etc last season (http://www.s24su.com/forum/index.php?threads/s24su-key-passes-index.26215/page-3). I tried to drink a large cup of mediocity withn my cereal, but I just couldn't help thinking about a young lad that is a Blade through and through and had been with the club since he was 9 was sold unecessarily. I've just taken a shower of mediocity and the droplets said 'it's football, you cannot turn down offers from a prem team, it's economics of football, it was inevitable etc but I just could not believe it. I went and sat out in the garden hoping to catch some rays of mediocrity and see if it would turn my skin red and white. No luck I am afraid. I can see what little chance we had of promotion going up in smoke as we sell our best players.

I went down to Bramall Lane this morning looking for some of these red and white specs that so many on here are wearing. They tested my eyes, but they did not have thr right lenses (extra thick). I am desperate to see things in a rosy light and see some good from this situation, however I cannot. Sorry Blades, I am thoroughly fucked off. I am just not willing to accept mediocrity. It will not 'be reit' when we sell our best players and promising young home grown assets.

"It's every boy's childhood dream to play in the Premier League and it was one of mine. This opportunity is fantastic and I thank the manager for giving it to me. Hopefully I can repay the faith that's he's shown in me and keep going at a higher level. Just from driving up to the training ground you can see the difference in the quality of things. The training ground looks spectacular and the pitches look phenomenal."

Matthew Lowton

Its not fair to keep him at this age when he wants to go Ollie, however much it hurts to see him go.

Every promotion bid is usually followed by a fire sale with SUFC. Always has been.

When we fail to get promotion it does, yes. Had we gone up we might have kept Lowton just as the previous time we probably would have kept the Kyles and before that Brown.

Deane and Fjortoft was different. We sold them instead of making a promotion bid not after a failed attempt. That really was dumb.

Bet Alan Hutton wishes our Academy would shut down! This'll be the second time in his career he'll have had his his place taken by a young right-back from our academy.

. Who said he wanted to leave??

Lowton did, for a start. Amongst other quotes;

"It's every boy's childhood dream to play in the Premier League and it was one of mine.

"It's a massive club in the Premier League with a big fan base and I'm looking forward to getting to work as soon as I can"

You can clearly tell he's gutted.

How long ago was Theo and Bale though? Put your modern day valuation increases in there and you could probably double those fees? We sold early and we sold short. We always do, think Edwards, Deane (twice) and Fjortoft, Graham Stuart, David Holdsworth, Tri Dellas, Kyles x 2. And thats just top of my head. Every promotion bid is usually followed by a fire sale with SUFC. Always has been.

Ok. To elaborate. Bale, chamberlain and Walcott are all better than Naughton and Lowton ever will be. We sold Walker after 5 games or something so £3m was a good price and a gamble for Spurs. That one paid off because I think he is developing in to something special, partly because he has a good mentality. Spurs are lucky he's not got a Leon Knight mentality like a lot of young players.

Personally I think we have been paid slightly over the odds for a right back who isn't in fairness, all that much of a defender. He was culpable plenty of times in that run we had of losing leads, and without his spectacular bottle job against Oldham we might well have had those three extra points we needed to push us over the line.

What we will miss, of course, is his attacking play. Prolific for a Right Back, he also linked up very well in and around the box and added a dimension going forward that I doubt we can replace.

Hate to break this to you, but, word coming from the seals is that they paid £750,000 up front and the the rest will be paid on fulfillment of the contract add ons. Lerner's been tightening his belt since MO'N left

Yeah I didn't expect it to be the full whack upfront. Still, we need the cash injection and as I say, Lowton isn't all that defensively.

Sadly 750,000k doesn't get you much in the striking department nowadays, as for Lowton I think the seals will use him as a squad player. They've gotta get their money's worth from Hutton. Hence the very low upfront price

It wont change mate, let me assure you after being at the lane since 1946.
We have always been a selling club, despite what is said.
We will never win owt.
We have to enjoy being part of the Blades, the Sheffield club with the best supporters in the world.
Not like the deluded lot across the great city.
I have lived in Kent for 34 years, have been involved at Gillingham FC in a professional capacity for a period of 8 years in my working life,(not in a football sense) and have seen it all from behind the "gloss"
Let me assure you that there is no place like the lane or better supporters anywhere.
Unless we have a take over or more investment then we will remain as we are.
I say no to a foreign take over, better as we are.At least we know we have a club.
Patience is required but mine has now worn thin.
Imho the best we can hope for in the current climate is a return to the championship, and I believe we have the right manager to get us there, if he gets the funding to achieve that.
The only other alternative is to support a team that can win trophies. Can you do that, Ollie,I would suggest not.
If I can keep going then I assume it will not be to difficult for you.
Born a Blade, live a Blade, die a Blade is my motto.

Wait a minute, Bramall Lane is a super stadium, from the inside it looks as good as most. The training ground at Shirecliffe is supposed to be the dogs, indoor and outdoor pitches and all the other bollocks that the cosseted life of a professional footballer these days demands. We are just as "massive" a club as Villa, at least in our fan base if not in our expectations or ambition so come on Matt, be honest, you've done like countless before you and fucked off for that pot of gold.

It's not like it's a big secret or anything because we all know what a bunch of mercenary bastards you modern footballers are, you went for a salary that most of us would find hard to turn down.....and maybe a chance at playing in the Prem as opposed to the pub league, can't really knock you for that truth be told and I hope all goes well.

Reading that back though one thing does strike me, why aren't we as "massive" as Villa? All told I'd say we're a comparable club in size and stature, maybe the fact that we have a tight fisted idiot in charge is the only difference but no, we aren't allowed to say things like that, we have to praise the Lord McCabe for saving our club and keeping us afloat, because there are so many clubs who've gone to the wall these last few years etc etc. Gets a bit tiring after a bit, clubs aren't going under every two minutes, they aren't selling averything off all the time. The badly run ones are, and we fit that category so sorry lads, McCabe really is the one who's fucked us up over the years, no matter how you try to flower it up and with the sale of Lowton it just goes to prove that unless he goes, there's not a singlething that's going to change for the better.

There's no doubt that winning the European Cup cements your stature for decades to come. Derby and Forest can still call on big support and would do well again if the conditions were right. No way are we similar in size and stature as Villa.

For a time, I thought Randy Lerner was one of the exceptions among these American figureheads - certainly better than the Glazers at Man. U. or Gillett and Hicks at Liverpool - but no. They all think that, by selling the best players, the team will still improve exponentially. I'm sure this is what pissed O'Neill off and the sale of Ashley Young has effectively neutered Agbonlahor. Too many average players at Villa now and a manager who, although doing well at Colchester and Norwich, faces a whole new test of his abilities.

Also, their team has got too old with Dunne, Hutton, Given, Petrov etc. Ireland looks set to leave for Hello-land and Darren Bent is hardly a force (now that was a poor buy).

So, all in all, we're not unique in amateur decision-making.

and to think the fee will just about cover montys idiotic contract.. money down the drain.. now at least we can give him away 'and' pay his wages..
sooo.. who do we have next on the production line?

Spurs are lucky he's not got a Leon Knight mentality like a lot of young players.
.......agreed.You can also put Mellis and (argueably) Slew in that category in terms of buying players on potential but who appear not to have the right mentality

Connor Brown?
Oh no, we let him go because he said something on Twitter!

i walked straight into that one didn't i?? personally i thought it was a bit pathetic really.. i think we're trying a bit too hard to be PC.. ultimately we have a football club to run

We had of course released him once already before this time around.

As much as I like Connor, he didn't seem the same player after his injury to me.

A question for those of you who can see no further than the ££££'s
Up until July we were free to sign whoever we wanted (much like Preston have done) but on the 1st July the fair play rules come into effect. So with us still having high earners Cresswell, Monty, Quinn and possibly Morgan still in the squad it is fair to say we are now unable to sign anyone until we trim the wages down to below 65% of turnover or we risk a penalty and maybe a transfer embargo.
Where is the sense in selling the only Right Back remaining at the club when we cannot replace him until we shift on some of the high earners ?
Rumour as it Willo is on his way to dingleland but does the above also mean we are now unable to sign McDonald up until the wages are trimmed ?
Is it only me that thinks United are doing business arse up surely we should have got rid of the high earners first before even thinking of selling of Lowton and McGuire. I can see us being lumbered with the likes of Quinn and Monty and a past it Cresswell on high championship level wages and being unable to repair the holes in the squad.

I was joking the other day when I posted Monty will be the new right back maybe that horrific thought could turn out to come true.
