Billy Sharp has now scored at least one goal every season he has played for us (ten seasons, including the two before he rejoined us in 2015). I don't think there has been another player who has achieved this since I started supporting us in 1980 (possibly Tony Kenworthy?). Another reason he deserves legend status!

He has scored in 10 of 11 seasons. He did not score in 2004-5 for us, when he made 2 appearances as a sub.

Kenworthy played in 11 different seasons, scoring in 8. He did not score in his first season or his last 2.

Monty played 12 seasons but only scored in 6 of them.

Alan Woodward played in 15 different seasons, scoring in all but the last, in which he played only 5 times.

Billy Gillespie holds the club record, scoring in 15 of the 17 seasons in which he played league games (he only played one game in each of the other 2) and in 3 of the 4 unofficial war time seasons he played in.

How about Jack Pickering. I make him scoring in 12 league seasons and there's 7 further war time seasons he may or may not have scored in.

Pickering scored in 19 straight seasons from 1928-9 to 1946-7, but as you say 7 of those seasons were War years, when he scored in the leagues set up during the War, so he is behind Gillespie and Woodward in terms of seasons scoring in the League.

Pickering did play in our 3 league games played before the league was abandoned in 1939-40, but did not score. Those games were expunged from the records and do not count in Football League stats anyway.

In that regard, Sharp has scored in 10 of 11 seasons but only scored league goals in 9 seasons. he scored in the League Cup only in 2009-10.

Pickering was an odd player because he had a 20 year career at the Lane and scored over 100 goals but there is a strong argument that he was never the best forward we had at any point: he had to contend with Harry Johnson, Jimmy Dunne and Jock Dodds, who all had better scoring records (although he was an inside forward and not a centre forward) and Jimmy Hagan had arrived as he was finishing.

Billy has the chance to extend his blades career !that will lift him to great heights in his blades career.
37 soon so yes! he is not the player he was but still lots to offer.

A well timed run and a sublime finish at the weekend. How many players would have snatched at it I wonder? Bill had the presence of mind to slow things down, wait for the keeper to commit and then dink it into the far corner. Class 👍

Scored in 12 of his 13 seasons in the league, all except the last one.

He did not play much for us during the War, being stationed in Aldershot.
I've had a look at the Clareborough/Kirkham "bible". Hagan played for us for 20 seasons, including very limited appearances during the war (when he was firstly at Aldershot, and later stationed in Germany), and scored in 18 of them (in all competitions). The only blank years were 1942/43 and his final season 1958/59.

We hear a lot these days about creative players being a "number 10". Hagan literally was that man (when he wasn't wearing number 8)!

Thanks. I was positing him as the winner if you count war seasons but wasn't sure if he had scored in every one of those seasons. Turns out he did:-)

Billy is a legend in my opinion. however when we have a fully fit squad. I think Billy will be on the subs' bench.
Ideal for bringing on for the last 30 min. and getting a goal.

Another one. Players who scored league goals in 3 different decades. I get

Billy Sharp 00s, 10s, 20s
Billy Gillespie 1910s, 20s 30s
Harry Johnson ditto

Joe Kitchen 1900s, 10s, 20s
George Jones 1930s, 40s, 50s

Bizarrely, Rob Kozluk came to my head to research, and he's not a million miles off! Only scored 3 goals for Utd, they were 2003 (x2) and 2010.

Does anyone know how many goals is Sharp now behind Hagan?
It was mentioned last season, but can't find definitive totals online

He's been brough on a few times since his last goal for us in March, without scoring. Given the chance, he's still a good bet to bag a goal but I don't think he's the player to bring on if we're trailing. Khadra, for example, is faster and can run at players.

For me, Billy is best brought on when we're defending a lead. His leadership qualities and ability to win free kicks, shield and hold up the ball are ideal to see out the game.

Joe Shaw only got 7 goals. Bizzarely he scored his first 2 in the same game on 5/11/49. He then scored 3 over the following 2 seasons, then only 2 in his last 500 games - the last being at highbury on 28/3/64.

How about Phil Jagielka? The 2000s, the 2010s (if you count his goal against Manchester United in December 2020 as being part of that decade which some people do) and 2020s (an own goal against Leeds in April 2021). Do I win a prize 😉!!

An interesting thing about these stats is that (I assume) Jimmy was employed primarily for his creative ability and not as a striker - yet he continued to score goals throughout his career.

That has got to be right. There was normally a centre-forward (9), whose main job was to score goals. The 2 inside forwards (8 and 10), were expected to create and score, usually one focussing more on creativity and link play between defence and attack, and the other principally supporting the number 9 and and scoring some goals. Hagan was principally a creator who scored plenty of goals; a better ratio than Tony Currie’s, in fact, but stats don’t necessarily tell the full story.

If only there were some decent films from the 1940s and 50s to show Hagan's wonderful ball skills!

With his weaker foot as well. Very very good goal.

Also shout out for Illiman taking the ball down. That lad is really something special.

Jagielka never scored for us in his most recent spell.

A goal against Manchester United?

You're right, I thought he scored against Manchester United don't know why. It was his first start for us I think which is why I remember him for that game . Its one thing trying to be funny and failing, but getting my facts wrong is unforgivable 😆
