Not sure why, but this morning I am feeling remarkably up-beat, as if a weight has been lifted from my shoulders. Ever since the afternoon that Ched was sent down I've had this awful sense of apprehension and edginess in all thoughts Blades related. Spending the best part of 6 hours on a sweaty coach and 120 mins + anxiety in sweltering conditions, only served to increase a sense of inevitability of failure. As the penalty shoot-out went on I think everybody really knew what the eventual outcome would be.
However, a coach ride home in the company of fellow Blades lightheartedly singing the virtues of 'Bobby Ford' and 'We're the famous Sheff United and we're shit at Wemberley...' brought things into perspective a little.
Its not about winning trophies (after all in my lifetime of watching the Blades since 1967, we've never won anything of worthy). Its about comararderie, the sense of belonging, the joy that can be captured from small moments like when Monty scored a goal in front of the Kop and you can say 'I was there'.
I will walk into work tomorrow and smile and I will say , 'I was there, I will be there next season, and the season after that' and they might say 'but you were shit' and I'll say 'well, we might have been shit, but hey, I'm a Blade and you're not, so maybe you don't quite understand . '
Looking forward to a few quiet months, got the Euros and Olympics to see us through, then hopefully re-invigorated for another season of the ups and downs of being a Blade.
When's the new season fixture list out?
