Jan Aage Fjortoft was a lot of money at the time for us, £700,000, he was obviously a success. Egan was £3.5m which was a lot at the time, not far off a club record although it was in stages I recall. Rob Hulse was £2m and did well, that was a lot when we bought him. If McBurnie carries on as he is doing and we get promoted then he'll have paid off the £20m we paid for him. Brewster, way off what I thought he would be though. He reminds me of Adrian Littlejohn and Littlejohn cost nowt and was from Walsall! Brewster is only ever going to succeed on the counter attack as he doesn't have the dribbling skills/movement to create within tight spaced and his finishing isn't good enough either in tight spaces. He scores the odd worldly goal now and again but then hits more into the back of the stand. I really hope Brewster proves me wrong, he seems a top lad but he's not what I thought he would be.

But back to your point and we have had some decent big signings but definitely got more success with free transfers and smaller buys!

Fair point. Fjortoft was good and I had forgot all about Hulse.

They had to open his knee up but only to remove a metal fragment. No work on ligaments or tendons so it's just a case of the incision healing. 6 weeks feels about right.

Interesting. Well my prediction of Bogle being done for most the season was way off then.

Hate to be that person slagging the Star off, but how long has a hamstring been a muscle?

Feel free to keep slagging off the Star but a hamstring is definitely a muscle.

I agree with these points.... But I don't agree with your Brewster analysis. He is a really good finisher, we just haven't seen it regularly yet. He's got a bad injury both times he's started to find form. He'll also find more space etc the more he plays.

I would argue that we can/should entirely write off his efforts in the Premier League, because the whole team was devoid of confidence and losing weekly.

Under Hecky Brewster has generally looked good and I think he's very unfairly been judged by a lot of fans.

Also, McBurnie was written off by 70/80/90% of our fans after two poor seasons.... Now he's the form striker in the Championship looking like an amazing (long-term) signing. I'm confident Brewster will show the same, if injuries don't ruin his career.

Latest updates / guesses following the media round ahead of Rotherham at home.
As always, let's start with the bad news... it sounds like Brewster's hamstring injury is potentially on the more severe end of the scale with surgery likely to be required. I referenced in my last post how he's struggled to get his career off the ground due to injuries and you really worry for him. I expect he'll now be out until the latter stages of the season. Without realising it, he'll have been here three seasons and barely ever had a run of games in the first team. Gutting for the lad.

Tommy Doyle remained out over the weekend with a calf injury. I can't see us risking him this side of the World Cup break unless we have any more injuries and I think this would be the right approach to take. We need to be so cautious.
James McAtee missed the weekend after the big knock in Bristol but will be available tonight.

Still no updates on the extent of Norrington-Davies or Sander Berge's injuries.

However, some very positive news came in on Jayden Bogle and Max Lowe who have both returned to training. Expect to see them back straight after the World Cup.
Also, no fresh injuries from the big win over Burnley. Feels like a first!
The positive thing, that I've previously mentioned, is that the injuries are no longer concentrated to one area. Since the returns of Robinson, Clark & Stevens we're now able to field a strong starting XI that can cope with most challenges.

T Doyle - December 2022 - calf injury

J Bogle - December 2022 (2 months) - minor knee operation

M Lowe - December 2022 (3 months) - hamstring

J O'Connell - January 2023 (2.5 years) - knee

I Coulibaly - January 2023 (5 months) - knee ligaments

S Berge - January 2023 (4 months) - ankle ligaments

D Jebbison - February 2023 (4 months) - ligaments

R Brewster - March 2023 (4 months) - hamstring surgery

R Norrington-Davies - March 2023 (5 months) - hamstring
 
Other week, Hecky said Berge could have featured vs Cardiff but won't be risked.

Sheffield United manager Paul Heckingbottom has revealed that midfielder Sander Berge ‘will be back after the World Cup’ after suffering an ankle ligament injury.

Somebody said that on shoutbox but I couldn't find any evidence of that quote anywhere and he hasn't appeared to be "back on the grass" in any of the training videos.
If you're right, then that's great but I'm not convinced.

Your ‘predictions or guesses’ do always seem to be on the pessimistic side? It’s useful because we seem to have so many injuries, and with the nature of some long term ones, it’s nice to be reminded that a forgotten player still belongs here! 😇

Yep.
I'm sure you're probably right re: predicting on the pessimistic side, though I have never bothered to track back to check how many I have got right vs wrong, over vs under forecast etc. as it's not that important, it's just a tracker whilst the list is so large.
Hopefully some find it useful. Others find it annoying, each to their own...

If I have been pessimistic then it has probably been influenced by how many long-term injuries we've had from situations you wouldn't have expected them to have developed from. It's always a nice surprise when someone returns a little earlier than anticipated.

***If anybody does have evidence of this Sander Berge quote then it would be good to see. I don't believe it wouldn't have been picked up on by the media in this day and age but I may well have just missed it...

Hecky said it in a presser the other week. He could probably feature vs Cardiff but would prefer to give Sander the WC time to rest.

The rest of your posts just seem to be trying to dig out other Blades that you have bizarre, and unfounded, bitter feelings towards.

Injuries isn't an excuse tonight the Rotherham manager said they were carrying a lot of injuries and had a recent tough schedule.
