I understand the reaction to sink our head into our hands and bemoan some cruel luck again but there's all summer to do that if we need to. Now the league games are over the mists have cleared, the weekly pythagorean equations are meaningless and no other results matter. At least it is clear and the fans and the club have only two choices. We slope off muttering about footballing gods and fate being against us or we grow some and target Stevenage as Public Enemy No 1. They are what stands between us and a Wembley appearance that could make this one of the best seasons we have had in a long, long time. I am not going to pretend I am a football manager and spout tactics. Stevenage have already declared theirs as 'raw meat and razor blades'. That does suggest a response that calls for calm heads, professionalism, possession and passing. If we try to emulate then we will get bullied off the pitch. We have to rely on the United staff to get the tactics right for this one.

What else can we do?

1. Get the mentality right. This is Stevenage ffs not Barcelona. We have lost 1 in 12 games and finished nearly 20 points in front of them. Of course we can beat them. Defeatism is hanging in the air like some toxic smog at the moment. Get the players away from this - physically if needs be out of Sheffield. Get them away, get them focused, use a sports psychologist if needs be but ensure the team starts the next game mentally fresh and focused

2. Fill the Lane for the second leg. Give tickets away, sell them for a fiver, bloody well pay people to come if needs be but fill the ground and make it as intimidating as possible for the return fixture. This is something the club can control and try to frighten the bejeebers out of the Stevenage players when they come out of the tunnel

3. Market the match, big it up, have a media campaign, sound as if we mean it and that we want every single Blades supporter behind us. I understand DW's diffidence in his interviews but it's all feeling very low key. If we go out in the play-offs I want it to be a blood & thunder exit not a shrug of the shoulders. The Stevenage manager is doing exactly this. We are a bigger club with a bigger fanbase, let's use that advantage. This game really matters and I want to hear the club appealing, pleading in fact demanding our support. It may be years before we have this opportunity again. We need a war cry not a whimper. Get some flag waving going like we have never done before and rally the supporters.

In other words, get off the back foot and on to the front foot. I want to see the Blades win at Wembley in my lifetime. I want to smile back at the Wednesday supporters and shove it back down their throats. We can't control everything but lets get pro-active about the things we can control. A big, big week for the club, let's get it right this time.

4.

5 Grand a week players should really beat 500 quid a week players , over 2 legs 9 out of ten times , so get Monty in at fullback Flynn and Williamson up front for at bit of tippy-tappy round the edge of there box , bring Macalister and Quinn back in Midfield , keep the ball down have patience and we should stroll it .

Monty!!!!!!! ffs we're not that desperate. oh wind up, sorry, phew had me going there.

Let's focus on the game and be thankful we've not got to face Wendy in the play offs, that would be worse. yes it hurts losing out to them for second place, with how weve performed at times this season we should be thinking positive, points wise we've mullered the other play off teams, we need to remember that.

We can do it, keep the faith!

How about Lourdes?

It won't be a miracle if we beat them (but I liked the joke). This Grim Reaper humour may well bite us on the @rse. Stevenage - population around 85,000. Last season they were in the 4th tier. Average gate this season 3,500. I am not demeaning what is obviously a success story and a good club, but ffs have we really come to this? Scared of our own shadow or what? We are a big club with a great tradition. As I said earlier, time for many of our supporters and players to grow some and roar us on to victory.

30,000 had the chance to do so a week ago. About half of them couldn't spare 90 minutes of unconditional commitment to the club they claim to support, preferring to wallow silently in misery, punctuated occasionally with a moan.

As expected, the misery spread like a blanket of fog and the '12th man' didn't play.

I can't go on Friday but on Monday I'm giving 100% for my club. I hope a few others will do the same.

Spot on Balde! Amazing how some who said we'd struggle to make mid-table are now moaning 'cos we finished 3rd. I need someone to explain to me what the fuck previous teams bottling play-offs has to do with the current squad?

Facts are we're in the play-offs AND we're the best team out of the 4. I'd have settled for that last August.

yep, that was the point of the OP. Two basic choices - go for it or simply roll over. I think the club can play a part in this and generate some energy by effective marketing & PR. Get those prices reduced and present this as an opportunity to come together for the cause. I want to hear some rallying calls - get Kevin McCabe out there talking publicly to the fans. I don't mean 'Europe in 5 years' stuff, just a simple, powerful "now is the hour" plea combined with some give from the club in terms of pricing

I think most of the pessimism comes from the fact that we're now a pale shadow of the team we were. We virtually have no forward threat, and a leaking defence.

Well the 'virtually no forward threat' has managed to put in four goals in the last two games. Two of those against against the same opponents we are playing on Friday and the same opponents that we ran ragged for the last 20 minutes of the game.

Far too often when we get a big, televised game with a decent turn out, the only time many of the fans come to life is to sing songs about Wednesday. Just for a change on Friday and Monday it would be nice to hear 'Stand up if you love the Blades' rather than if you hate Wednesday. I dislike them as much as anybody, growing up in a big area of support for them I got a lot of stick, especially back in 79, but I would far sooner show my support for my team rather than give the massive another bit of attention. Sometimes it comes across as an inferiority complex, I was asked by a Wolves supporting mate why somebody had gone to so much expense to have a huge 'We hate Wednesday' flag made rather than one extolling their love for the Blades.

Agree that we still have a goal threat from midfield, but I reckon to have success in the play-offs, and given our thread-bare attack, we need to shore up at the back and sharpish.

With our threadbare attack it might be worth Stevenage bringing on a fringe player in the last few minutes just to "do" Cresswell , Porter and O'Headless will not be seen as threats I'm sure. Cresswell getting injured scares the crap outta me, it's a sad day when the clubs attacking hopes rest on the shoulders of a guy who's best years are now behind him.

monty is injured .. thank your appropriate god.

I agree entirely Oakland. 'Hate' is such a strong word as well. Lets cheer on the blades, none of this 'This city is ours', etc 90mins of 'Sheffield United, Sheffield United' ala Peterbourough away in the 80's will do for me.
