I get your point, but what do you mean cancel for no reason?

Some vague individual idea of what constitutes respect is, in my opinion, no reason to postpone. I'm not downplaying the enormity of the situation but forcing a whole nation to mourn isn't authentic and becomes disrespectful in itself

And what exactly has the Queen done to stop any of this happening? Sat in her life of luxury and watched it unfold. I don't know how we're going to cope without her. I hope the country doesn't become bitterly divided now she's gone.

The monarch has specific duties which they perform throughout their reign. The Queen was still performing those duties up until two days before her death.

But of course, your portrayal of what a monarch is, reflects the typical stereotype propagated by those who don't know, or don't want to know.

If you want to tear it all down, you should at least have something better to replace it with.

That's what the monarchy is, old fashioned, outdated and completely out of touch with the real Britain. Hopefully now Charles is King it may spell the end for them. His inability to remain impartial in political matters won't end well.
I hope you are right but that won’t stop him trying to get his hands on all the income from the Crown Estates.

I'm very much a Royalist and upset at the news. I think there ahould be a period of mourning/celebration - but I think ERII would not want this weekend's games postponed - people have bought tickets and made arrangements - maybe even booked a day off without pay. 10 days is too much. We love our Queen, but the Brits don’t need that much time to wallow in self pity. 4 days will be enough, Thursday to Sunday next week, then make the Friday a regular Bank Holiday.
We can’t all go to London waving flags outside the Palace, so a minutes silence and belting out the National Anthem at every stadium tomorrow would be a brilliant send off, and a chance to pay our respects.
But I think pressure will mount on the EFL to cancel, unfortunately.
What an excellent post. Unfortunately though I suspect that everything will be cancelled. it won't be the football authorities that make the decision, it won't be the new PM who makes the decision, it won't even be the King that decides - It will be the faceless twats behind the scenes (commonly called "The establishment") who decides. They won't give a fuck about people wanting to show respect, but who don't live anywhere near London.

Yes, I'll expand.

There is absolutely nothing to celebrate about modern Britain, we're destined to become a failed state within my lifetime and life is going to be significantly worse by every metric for our children and theirs.

In the United States for example, life expectancy has fallen for the first time in recorded history, the primary factor being suicide. A trend that is growing to a greater or lesser extent throughout the western world.

Any governing principle that once unified the nation state has largely disappeared, and society is more atomised, more selfish, more nasty and vindictive than ever before. To paraphrase Martin Luther King, we can't disagree without being violently disagreeable.

If some of us have reverence for certain traditions, it's because that's all there is left, and those too will be a faded memory soon enough.

None of the above were caused by having a constitutional monarchy, and none will be fixed by electing some cunt in a suit every four or five years either.
Traditions are one thing, imposed traditions are something completely different. The failed state you talk of has been coming for as long as the Queen has been in position, it didn't happen overnight. Interesting that you pick America over Britain for your increase in suicide rates stats. You don't feel that the Internet may play a part in the increased rates? Peer pressure? If using newspaper in the outside shitter in the yard is what you're yearning for crack on, I'll take the modern world any day. As always, people are allowed different opinions, I don't crave the need for reverence you seem to but that's just me. Nothing against Liz and I'll respect her passing as I would anyone else but don't try and pressure people (not you personally) into the forced mourning that is becoming apparent in the media.

I'd argue our soaring suicide rates are at least somewhat related to a class system that the royals exemplify.

How are we supposed to move to a better form of governance when we still accept being beneath others due to the circumstances of their birth?

I came to say exactly this. She definitely wouldn't want people to be moping around, she'd want life to carry on as normal I'm sure. It's also a great idea to have a regular bank holiday, dont we have one of the lowest allocations of public holidays in Europe?

I hope all sport is cancelled this weekend. It might be a generational thing but I’m in my 60’s and have no wish to do anything jolly at the moment- a very sad day for our nation.
I’m well in to my 60s and I am already sick to death of this wall to wall nonsense about how history has stopped, she was a rock for this country, saccharine coated memories, etc., etc. and the rest of the bilge.
If people want to mourn and fell sad - fine but it shouldn’t be foisted on all of us.
There are far, far more important things going on at the moment and this is going to be used by our wonderful trussed-up government to deflect attention from what is really important and what they should be doing.

What has been imposed on you? Any convention that you currently adhere to has been determined by those who came before you anyway.

FWIW George VI died on the morning on 6 February 1952. Some games (including a game we played in) took place that night, and a full programme was played on the Saturday (9 February).

England were playing India in a test match. The rest day was brought forward to the following day as a mark of respect - similar to what has happened with the current test though no rest days now - and they finished the test thereafter.

I recall the games in England were cancelled when Diana's funeral was on the Saturday in September 1997 (it was an international weekend anyway, by chance) though games took place in Scotland, and there was criticism of that.

I don't think the public will have anything like the same feelings towards him either.

Well said.

I'm just glad that we're at home against Rotherham, we could've been away this weekend and have travel and accommodation already booked.

Feel sorry for whoever has Plymouth away, boy that must suck.
Not if it's Forest Green! I know it's the Wendies!

Financial support for the monarchy. The idea of supporting a family and all its hangers on through a birth right gets my goat, regardless of the Insignificant cost you'll throw back at me. It's wrong in principle.

You financially support many things that are wrong in principle. That won't change by swapping a monarch for a president.

Indeed, you already support the families of MP's, which they claim as expenses.

Difficult one but I think they should be cancelled

It won't be good for Utd at all if they are. We need to play as often as possible while we're in form

I agree with Woodford that this is a failed state and there is absolutely nothing to celebrate about it. However, my view is that the monarchy is part of that failed state and we would be better off without them.
There was a time in the 1800s when that was they things were going but the gentry, who always knew how to look after themselves, bought the plebs off otherwise the monarchy would have been gone. I think it is a shame it didn’t happen then. I doubt it will happen now - an even greater shame in my view.
Maybe Charles will really fuck it up, but I doubt it, unfortunately.
Our chancellor Osbourne, a few years ago, gave the royals a big slice of the Crown Estate’s income and Charlie boy made it clear he wanted all of it.
Maybe slowly but surely the veneer that covers this oh-so-special, exalted and superior family will slowly but surely be permanently tarnished by him.

There was only one Premier League game postponed on the day Diane died. She died Sunday morning so the Super Sunday game was cancelled but Monday Night football went ahead.

The funeral was where games were cancelled though as you say it was an international break

I believe the hangers on aspect was removed years ago as paid for by the public purse.

Whilst people like to visit old buildings there’s far more allure when there is an acting Monarch.

The thought the Monarchy costs us isn’t true either. They bring in far more in tourism than they cost. The Queen started paying tax years ago too.

As you say what do you get by moving to a Republic? You vote in the government now anyway and the Monarch is largely symbolic and neutral.

You’d just have had President Boris instead of PM Boris. The fact he has to bow to a higher power at least means he actually had to audibly explain some of the shite his party were involved in. Under a Republic you wouldn’t even have that.
