Happy 76th birthday to Woody in heaven

I was only young at the time but my memories of Woodward were

1: He had brilliant technique when striking a ball, hit it so cleanly that he seemed to generate much more power than other players.

2: When he took corners...he seemed to shoot (not cross) the ball towards the 6 yard box.
He hit the ball with such power from a corner with a bit of swerve and you often thought he had a chance of scoring direct from a corner.

Alan Woodward is my all-time favorite player. Along With Currie. his corners and free kicks were first-class. Currie dint need to look up, floated the ball over the opposition's defense. for Woody to run on to, and smash the ball into the net. they should be a stand named after him. a statue would be good as well.

Mentioned before on this forum that it's a scandal he never had a stand named after him, whereas a load of minor sponsors no-one has ever heard get their name writ large. Even Jessica Ennis got a naming at one point, when she's hardly ever set foot in the place. A scandal......
We need him on the pitch, a seven on the corner flags would be an appropriate tribute.

I can still picture the bemused "how did he do that?" expression on Peter Shilton's face

You don't see that any more....where corner takers are almost trying to score direct from the corner.
Remember Eder of Brazil trying and threatening to score direct from a corner in the Spain 82 World Cup.

Only wish I could of enjoyed the greats of years gone by reading these comments 😒
Yep unlucky- when looking back its easy to forget all the crap games- but without doubt Woody and Currie are NOT memories looking through rose tinted spectacles- they were truly magnificent and joys to watch - these guys were genuine WORLD CLASS, the only one that has come close is Sabella.

Can still remember that, he scored at least 3 straight from corners that I know of, that Leicester one, got Villa in my head, not sure of the other, he possibly scored one of two more even from a corner, maybe Silent will know?

Truly wonderful player. Although my light is firmly under TC's bushel as the best I have ever seen Woody was not far behind, he had fabulous technique & struck the ball like no other. Just as it was a travesty that TC only got 17 England caps, the fact that Woody didn't get any at all is absolutely baffling in the extreme.

v Newcastle (h) League Cup Sept 1969
v Leicester (a) Sept 1971
v Coventry (h) Nov 1971
v Norwich (h) Jan 1973

Great replacement keeper as well. Held off the mighty Leeds with a string of superb saves when we beat them 1-0 after Hodgy went off with a broken finger.
Dislocated finger. Hodgy was back in next game. Woody had 5 stints as emergency keeper, conceded only 1 goal

I remember Nov 27, 1971, at home in the old Div.1
We won 7-1 against Ipswich Town and Woody scored 4 of them, 1 a penalty.

We finished 10th, that season
