Right so not wanting this as a stick to beat Norwood with. A) I think he was alright bar that, B) I think he's generally one of our better players and C) when he ticks we tick. That's my opinion, don't bother arguing it.

But why is he on pens? Why is he second behind Billy?
He's missed more than he's scored for us. Regularly misses in shootouts, I think he's scored 1 pen for us against Watford.

Why aren't any one of Brewster, Ndiaye or Berge taking them?
Baffling management decision. Doesn't matter now thank god but it could've if it was 0-0 or 1-0.

Hecky said he was first in line after Billy. He is now no longer first in line after Billy. Sander has taken up that position.

I presume the decision making is some sort of reflection of training performances in penalty exercises. Not the same as the live situation, but nonetheless as good a guide as there is.
I thought it was a good save rather than a poor penalty.

But he regularly misses them... so

Penalties are a weird thing. Pretty much every player that’s taken one has missed one. The fact that Norwood consistently puts himself forward to take one, despite missing several shows the confidence he has in himself. And also the confidence that the team have in him.

There will be several players that will never put themselves forward to take one. Some don’t like that pressure and it can also affect players more to miss. I won’t hang them out to dry either

I think we probably need a new penalty taker but I also think that if Norwood steps up again I’d back him to hit the target. Whether he scores will be down to more than just luck as you’ve also got a keeper there trying to stop him. It’s not a free hit

Gonna get slated here.

I’d try Berge or Brewster on pens.

Don’t trust Norwood.

I also don’t trust our hero. Never feel confident when he steps up!!

Hecky said he was first in line after Billy. He is now no longer first in line after Billy. Sander has taken up that position.

I got the impression it was some sort of legacy from Wilder's regime going off Hecky's interview. He seemed to imply it was the traditional order of penalty takers that was already in place at the club.

For fuck's sake Paul, you are the manager now. You can change the penalty kickers anytime you want.

Soon as the penalty was given I noticed Fleck point straight to Norwood.

His pen against Watford was decent but the others are the classic telegraph, so even near the corner the keeper has already gone across.

Might get a reprieve in the Prem with VAR.

Agree though, I'd expect to see those you mention being in line. That said you'd think these decisions are made based on the training ground .

Why would you get slated for that? Berge has had 2 for us and scored both 🤣

Same re: Billy to be honest

He isn’t mentally strong enough to be taking penalties. The play off game drew a big fat red line under that point. And again on Saturday, once again, he stood on the spot waiting while the keeper yapped at him. The keepers are playing a game they know breaks him. If he insists on just standing there and waiting, then he should have turned and handed the ball to someone else to throw a spanner in the world of the keepers mind games. That would have been the smart psychological moved to put the keeper off.

Billy will take the next one if he's on the pitch, otherwise Sander if he's still with us.

Here come the facts. He's taken a total of 7 and scored 4

In actual matches he has taken 3 and scored 2.

Millwall 22/23 - MISSED
Watford 19/20 - SCORED
Brentford 18/19 - SCORED

Penalty shootouts he has taken 4 and scored 2.

Forest 21/22 - MISSED
Southampton 21/22 - SCORED
Burnley 20/21 - SCORED
Hull 18/19 - MISSED

It's barmy that he was second in line given his dreadful record. I'm just glad it didn't cost us.

He shouldn't even be third in line.

His record wasn't dreadful, he had scored 4 out of 6 before Saturday

Don't muck about, get laces through it lad. None of this fancy "placing" it.

Billy will take the next one if he's on the pitch

Last one I remember Sharp taking he missed

Do wonder if it's just a case of improper randomisation. If you can't hit it like Kane and hit the top corner every time, just rock/paper/scissors with someone, if you win go keeper's left, lose keeper's right, if you tie twice in a row go down the middle. Completely unexploitable.

For 'Bristol C 18/19' do you mean Brentford? The game where Madine was sent off and McGoldrick made it 2-0 late on?

If not then add that one on as well.

Your not going to get slated at all. Berge should have taken it on Saturday.

I remember Fulham fans saying he was their best ever penalty taker when we first signed him and looking at his record it seems like he only missed one penalty in his career before joining United.

I don't think he should be 2nd in line now though. Missing two in a row just heaps more pressure on him for the next one.

Sharp has taken 28 penalties in actual games for us, scoring 22 and missing 6. Last season he took 4 and scored 3.

In penalty shoot outs, his record for us is:
3 scored, 1 missed
Some Mildly interesting stats…generally people don’t realise how many pens are missed!

xG for a penalty kick is about 0.75, in this case it’s not subjective but literally reflective of % of pens scored

Based on numbers in here:

Sharp has scored 78% of his penalties, so slightly outperforms (and a decent sample size) and is consequently just above average as a penalty taker!

Norwood after Saturdays miss is at 57% which is is well below expected, but based on small sample size he’s only 1 goal shy from a near enough expected output

A good penalty taker wants to be north of 85% and elite level would be anything in the 90s (Matt Le Tissier scored 98% of his)

That 2 minute wait while Samba was fannying around broke him. That one on Saturday and the one against Forest were nowhere near the corner: compare and contrast with his last succesful one against Southampton which was hammered right into the side netting.
