John Egan, young lad from Sunderland and Matt Hill from Blackpool - was at Barnsley recently and will have played for DW at Bristol City

Probably Hill, Ertl, Egan, Taylor tonight then. Williams and Monty on the bench as cover.

By Saturday (touch wood) it could be Lowton, Collins, Maguire, Hill with Williams and Egan on the bench. From famine to feast.

Well done Danny, worked very quickly to get those two in.

As said above its needs must. Good luck to Egan and Hill tonight, hope they settle in quickly.

Egan signing a bit of a kick in the teeth for Terry Kennedy I would've thought...

Hill i can understand, but what's the point in Egan? Why not give kennedy a chance?

If he's not ready he's not ready. Egan is clearly just further along in the process.

Egan is only on loan for 28 days and like Houso said has had a bit more experience.

He was on loan briefly at Palace.

Kennedy seems to be gutted though as you would expect.

His time will come though.

Cheers Coops.

Well done DW for getting reinforcements in quickly (assuming they do OK tonight!).
When things like this happen it sometimes makes me wonder what the point of our "development" squad is? If players like Conneely & Kennedy aren't ready to step up to the first team in League 1, when will they be ready? How are they going to improve when they're nowhere near the first team? Conneely for example - nothing against the lad, but he's now 23 (same age as Kyle N) and hasn't played for the first team yet.

If they are not ready we should be looking to loan them out to gain the experience.

Trust Danny to put them in when they are ready.
It may be OK to blood one youngster at a time (when there is less pressure thatn tonight) but not two or three and see them get slaughtered because of inexperience.
That was always a risk with George Long and the Exeter match could have caused him a real set-back if he had continued and failed again.
Luckily Simmo came back and has been pretty much spot on ever since.

Kennedy is a year younger than Maguire. He's also been injured, so patently isn't "nowhere near the first team"; he'll feature towards the end of the season I expect. Coneely is some way off and I'd imagine he'll leave at the end of the year.
Whitehouse is getting game time in the reserves and isn't far off. Expect him to be round and about at the end of the season.

Given the successful development of Maguire and the relative success of a plethora of players in the last 3-5 years, I think the current system is working well. Not everyone can and will develop as you expect.

Maybe if it was a case of filling alongside Collins for a game or 2 then these might have got a chance. But there just seems far too much disruption to the back 4 to throw in a kid - it's not the right way to blood players into the senior fold. If, for example McGuire got suspended and Ertl was missing then Kennedy might have been given the nod as it is only one change - not as many as we have tonight. To my knowledge Kennedy has no senior experience whatsoever.

I think Danny has played this one right, well, that depends on just how good they are of course. Any problems we have tonight will lay in communication. Simmo needs to be eyes ears and mouth to this back 4.
In Danny I trust.

Conneely knows his days a Blades player are numbered:-

But it’s important to make a distinction between 23 year olds like him and 18 year olds like Kennedy.

I still think the money (£160K?) we wasted last season on recruiting for “The Development Squad” (Conneely, McAllister, Tonne, Lokberg, Thomas, Warren, Gardos, Philliskirk etc) would have been better spent on trying to keep the First Team in the Championship.

Kennedy came on as a sub in that last day 4-0 drubbing at Swansea last season.

Still looks a very weakened/disjointed defence.

FFS! It's only bloody Walsall! Attack or bust! Ched, Cressy, Will and BT should make hay tonight!

It is only Walsall, but little old them gave us a fright at the beginning of the season and if I remember correctly, gave us a bit of a footballing lesson the first half. Weren't we 2 - 0 down before an arse kicking changed the game?

As a side note, anyone heard what the latest is regards MacD's injury?

Didn't we say "it's only Walsall" around 30 years ago in this tier of English football, went tits up as I remember it, my first harsh lesson in United disappointment!

I was there, I was there. Thanks for cheering me up. Visions of Martin Peters,Don Givens, John Matthews dancing in my head

Me too. My overriding image is not Givens' missed pen, but with 5 mins to go, and the score a safe 0-0 and with neither team looking like they would score, John MacPhail careering across the penalty area to bowl over Alan Buckley for no apparent reason. "Fuck, pen", my 14 year old self thought...

Jeez, what a sad f'kin day that was!

Seeing grown men in tears on the kop is not for the faint hearted

Never again................................................I hope!

One of too many days as a blades supporter, Chelsea springs to mind, thought it was the worst day of my life.

I was at the Walsall game too. Any Blade who was there has no justification moaning about how the pig fans acted v Palace when they were relegated. We were worse on that day.

The false tannoy announcement saying that Swindon (?) had lost, keeping us up, prompted my only ever scaling of the security fences at Bramall Lane. And I came back over them a damn site quicker once the police horses starting galloping towards the Kop!! That Donkey Verns had a lot to answer for.

Let's hope that we go for the jugular tonight, the saying "attack is the best form of defence" can surely never have been truer than tonight.
