Okey doke...

Horrible, horrible first half. Players looking down on confidence, tired and in the case of Ertl and Beattie either unsure of their role in the side or simply unable to carry it through.

Scunny playing a 5 man midfield and pressing high up the pitch easily dictated the game. Only one move of note from United in the entire half, and one goal from Scunny after a nice solo run and shot from Duffy.

The turning point of the game was Scunny going to ten men after silly late lunge on Doyle. Without KMac's passing, and with the rest in this form, we were never going to overcome their 5 man midfield, but against ten men the game was back on.

A frustrating and stumbling second half followed. Quinn's movement and Cresswell's unselfish running were a vast improvement on what went before, but the sort of football we've become used to in recent weeks only showed itself in flashes. A lovely move saw Williamson equalise, but it took a jammy deflection from a Quinn shot to give us the lead. From then on it was keep-ball until the final whistle, with only one late corner from Scunny threatening the lead.

Ratings:

Simmo: 6 Underemployed
Lowton: 6 Quiet until the closing minutes
LJF: 4 Bit of a stinker
McGuire: 5 Unhappy first half, steady second
Collins : 6 Solid
Willo: 5 Poor first half - saved by a great goal in second
Doyle: 5 Some good work, but limitations exposed without KMac
Ertl: 3 One great break, otherwise utterly lost out there
Flynn: 5 Struggled to get involved
Beattie: 3 Hmmm...
Ched: 7 MoM comfortably - good lad

Quinn: 6 Without playing well, showed what we miss without him
Cress: 6 Good running and link-up play
Hoskins: Too little time to judge...

Crowd - quiet
Pitch - bobble boing bobble
Ref - Decent once he got a grip of the time wasting - red card seemed reasonable
Wilson - Good decisive changes made early
Result - absolutely chuffing priceless :)

I thought Collins tonight was far from solid and probably his worse game this season. Beattie just does not look the part for me, lets hope its not another Marcus Bent moment! Also wonder why Danny continually plays a right footer on the left (Flynn) and a left footer on the right(Quinn), we have got to get round the back of them and get the crosses in and this is an area in which Ched has to do too much work. Agree, Creswell worked hard and injected more tempo into the game (just wish he was 10 years younger!) We have to get a replacement for MacD, someone who can collect the ball from the defenders (Williamson does not suit this role) and I think Quinny could actually do this. Anyway, 3 points against a hard working and well organised Scunthorpe side will do for me.

It highlighted how important it is to have players who are comfotable on the ball. Williamson was lethargic and wasted on the flank in the first half, actively sought the ball and made runs into the box once moved into the centre. Quinny added much needed drive, purpose and flashes of genuine quality. Flynn seems like a fair-weather played and Ertl was so lost in the middle it was embarrasing. Well done to Wilson for rectifying some strange selection decisons. With a great deal of fortune, we go marching on. UTB!

As for wrong footed wingers - creates a lot of space for the full backs to attack.

4 first half, 7 second. I don't do fractions and I always round down. 5 it is :)

Almost redeemed yourself. Willo controlled everything second half and added so much to the attack. I'd like to see your marks for other players in the first half.

good report though thankyou I generally agree

Can't understand why Beattie started, he's done absolutely nothing since coming back and did absolutely nothing tonight. Should have been Hoskins for me, I'd even pick Cresswell over Beattie.

Hoskins should have started, so should Quinn. Wilson got this badly wrong IMO. Referee one of the worst this season.

Failed miserably to clamp down on time wasting. They also could have had another sent off second half for what would have been a second booking.

He did book 2 for time wasting. Also didn't play the time he should have in time added on, bearing in mind Ched was injured during that 4 minutes. He'll do for me. I've seen much worse this season. Getting his diagonals wrong a couple of times is quite common

I thought the two players coming off for Scunthorpe should have been booked for time wasting. Their GK should also have had a second yellow for time wasting.

I didn't think he was too bad TBH. He was a bit hasty to tell us to get a move on though once he'd booked them for time wasting.

Tonight I shall be giving out ratings in the style of Leonard Sachs

Simmo: Efficacious
Lowton:Precocious
LJF: Mendacious
McGuire: Irreverent
Collins : Coruscating
Willo: Reinvigorated
Doyle: Stekhanovistic
Ertl: Bobbar
Flynn: Peripheral
Beattie: Lavatorial
Ched: Indefatigable

Quinn: Perspicacious
Cress: Redoubtable
Hoskins: Tempestuous.

Willo looked a different player second half. He was finally given a chance in the position where is comfortable and didn't it show? He is a different type of player to K-Mac and could actually complement him in due course. We shall see. Definitely worth a 7 at least. What a pleasure to see a CM making a well-timed run and crashing home a crucial goal

Well done Quinny. Together with Willo he changed the game. An intelligent, energetic and skillful contribution and a well deserved goal. 7.5

Ertl performed like a blond, 6'2" version of another player currently in our squad. 0

Beattie: Thanks for the first time round, James. Good luck and do drop into BDTBL when you're around. You'll always be welcome. 1.5

DW: amongst his many fine qualities are: flexibility, decisiveness and moral courage. He showed all these and more tonight. We are very fortunate to have him as our manager. 8.5 (should have started Willo in CM).

Three vital points! 25 more will do the job, for sure.

I think mendacious is too high for LJF, exquisitely shit is better
