¡No Pasarán!
Okey doke...
Horrible, horrible first half. Players looking down on confidence, tired and in the case of Ertl and Beattie either unsure of their role in the side or simply unable to carry it through.
Scunny playing a 5 man midfield and pressing high up the pitch easily dictated the game. Only one move of note from United in the entire half, and one goal from Scunny after a nice solo run and shot from Duffy.
The turning point of the game was Scunny going to ten men after silly late lunge on Doyle. Without KMac's passing, and with the rest in this form, we were never going to overcome their 5 man midfield, but against ten men the game was back on.
A frustrating and stumbling second half followed. Quinn's movement and Cresswell's unselfish running were a vast improvement on what went before, but the sort of football we've become used to in recent weeks only showed itself in flashes. A lovely move saw Williamson equalise, but it took a jammy deflection from a Quinn shot to give us the lead. From then on it was keep-ball until the final whistle, with only one late corner from Scunny threatening the lead.
Ratings:
Simmo: 6 Underemployed
Lowton: 6 Quiet until the closing minutes
LJF: 4 Bit of a stinker
McGuire: 5 Unhappy first half, steady second
Collins : 6 Solid
Willo: 5 Poor first half - saved by a great goal in second
Doyle: 5 Some good work, but limitations exposed without KMac
Ertl: 3 One great break, otherwise utterly lost out there
Flynn: 5 Struggled to get involved
Beattie: 3 Hmmm...
Ched: 7 MoM comfortably - good lad
Quinn: 6 Without playing well, showed what we miss without him
Cress: 6 Good running and link-up play
Hoskins: Too little time to judge...
Crowd - quiet
Pitch - bobble boing bobble
Ref - Decent once he got a grip of the time wasting - red card seemed reasonable
Wilson - Good decisive changes made early
Result - absolutely chuffing priceless
