Billy Clark on trial

Squinny for Clarke doing the rounds again here this morning. All part of a merry-go-round at Bloomfield Road which involves Matt Phillips going to QPR on loan with Hulse and DJ Campbell going the other way.

Fleety, see if the want Monty or Doyle.. Willing to chuck in Cresswell for the right price

Personally I wouldn't swap quinn for Clarke, both are versatile. Would rather we got rid of the 3 above 1st.

Once again, I missed something with Clarke.

He did Ok with us and I'd be happy to sign him. To talk about giving away our only saleable asset for a player who cant get a look in in a run of the mill second division side sounds strange to me.

Over the years we've seen loads of players come and impress for a short period, and turn shite once the inks dried. Imagine if Quinn had been on loan with us during the first few months of the season. We'd be frothing at the mouth at the prospect of signing him now. Now it seems many would drive him to Blackpool.

Not saying it's a straight swap, we want around £750K for Squinny but Clarke is out of contract in the Summer so I reckon it would be Billy plus cash. Don't forget there were rumours of Clarke AND Phillips for Squinny at one point although I don't think that was ever going to happen, certainly not now.

By Billy plus cash I do of course mean 'undisclosed' ;)

Whilst I am not jumping up and down about potentially signing Clarke, I think the wool has been pulled over your eyes as regards to Stephen Quinn. Over than a couple of months (one each side of this summer) Quinn has been truly shocking for United. Ever since bursting onto the scene in the Premiership all those years ago, he has flattered to deceive. His shocking positioning, lack of tracking back, the annoying way he holds onto the ball, his perpetual 'it's not my fault' attitude, his wayward distribution and aimless flicks are more than tiresome. He received a breif respite for showing some passion last season and some real skill. The start of this season he was excellent for a few games, but the Ginger Messi has gone and we have got the old elpiton back. Not only this, but he must be one of the highest earners in the division. He is one of the brady bunch offered lucrative contracts under Blackwell that are bleeding the club try. His contribution has actually been very little for a half season and of the big earners (Simmo, Monty, Cressy, Evans) he is providing the least value for money at the moment. Get him shipped out. If we could get money, then snatch their bleeding hands off.

Personally I'd like to see Quinn sold and a left winger bought. I'd like to see us playing with width and with Flynn on one flank and A N Other on the other wing. We are too narrow at the moment and whilst we are solid away from home, I think we'd benefit from more width. It would mean Williamson could push inside and challenge McDonald for a place (he has his creativity, but puts a foot in) or low and behold we play 2 midefielders that can play (an tear some teams apart).

I agree Quinn often flatters to deceive. It's a shame we can't get his game more consistent. It’s the suggestion that we should give away the only player that others deem worth anything in return for a second division reserve that’s surprising.

When you factor in his wages, then it becomes less clear cut alco. For example the rest of Quinn's contract might cost us £1.5m in wages. Say for example if Clarke takes half of that, then you're looking at saving the club 750k. Makes a transfer fee less of an issue. That said, if we can hold out and get some money in return then we should do so.

Clarke would add something to the team in that he has pace. He is small and nippy and we don't have anything like that. Being able to play out wide and offer cover to Ched/Cressy/BT up top gives more options.

My worry is that Blackpool scouts have been watching Quinn. If they've monitored his performances for the last month, then they will have lost interest. We could end up being stuck with a 15k a week elpiton that adds little or no value to the team.

Why is everyone misusing the phrase "flatters to deceive"? Have any of you actually any idea what it really means?

Well, I'd say it fitted his fancy flicks and stepovers that go nowhere.

Amaze us. I've been hoping Santa would deliver an unpaid internet bulletin board thesaurus........

Just who is he flattering with those flicks and stepovers? The fans? Who is he trying to deceive?

Actually, I'm wrong. Terribly wrong. You're really very clever. You haven't missed the point of the saying at all. You're too clever for me.

I don't think that's the case fella. I just think you were trying to be clever and made an arse of yourself. We've all been there.

Events last night may have put paid to anything happening re Quinn/Clarke :(

Sources in Sussex indicate Billy Clarke DOES feature on United's list of possible targets. #sufc #twitterblades http://bit.ly/1nv1Btg

Liked him last time round but Clough complained we had too many similar players when he took over and now he seems to be filling the squad up with small, not really a midfielder/not really a striker type of players. Hard to see a balanced first 11 from what we've got and not sure Clarke would change that.

not really prolific either.

he did well during his time here & would probably jump at the chance to come back.

Is he the striker we need though?

I thought he was decent enough last time round.

Wouldn't mind Will Hoskins either.

Sign him up! You can never have too many good footballers and he is one of those.

Will be delighted if we get him.

THERE has been no approach from Sheffield United for Billy Clarke, and John Gregory has warned Nigel Clough he can think again if he expects to land the Reds’ forward.

The Blades boss confirmed Clarke, who can play up front, in the hole or on the wing, was "one name on a list", but no move materialised before the transfer window shut at 11pm on Friday.

However, with the loan window opening on February 8, Clough told a Sheffield-based newspaper he was still interested in taking Clarke to Bramall Lane.

“Billy is one of a number of names,” Clough told www.thestar.co.uk. “But we haven’t really progressed anything yet so we’ll see what happens next week.

“We’re looking for something a little bit different and we have a few people in mind.”

However, Gregory was unimpressed with Clough’s public declarations about the former Republic of Ireland U21 international, adding that United had not contacted him during the transfer window.

“He [Clough] never spoke to me about Billy,” Gregory said. “I think Nigel Clough told a local journalist up there about one or two players he was interested in, and that included Billy, although I don’t know why he’d be so public about it.

“There has been no approach and Billy is a player I’m a big fan of, so it’d have to be £5million if they want him.”
