It’s hardly the Camp Nou though. 😆
It was tightly packed, with every seat taken. So the "culprit" explained to the stewards what was going to happen, a simple tannoy announcement was made, he spread the word around the people near him, some chose to stay alongside him, some chose to move away (I did), once his mini display was finished, the tannoy announcement thanked everyone for their help, and for creating a great atmosphere. A simple & safe approach at the Not Nou.

Definitely safer but that sounds a bit shite to me. All very manufactured and gimmicky. It’s football not a circus show.

In EVERY country, except England, I've been to watch football, from Moscow to the Maracana, I've been to Iran vs Iraq, Kyiv to Kazakhstan, the lot ... what I've described is seen as a key part of football fan culture. Not here though, eh ... all a bit shite.

So, we go for the alternative here in England. Light it, Lob it.

The best bit of "fan culture" we have at Bramall Lane is ridiculously manufactured & choreographed. An aging DJ gives a hand single to the guy in the PA Box, at the same moment before kick off, at every game, even U23 games at one o'clock on a Monday in January, the PA Guy presses play on a track released in 1974, the first few bars are played, the vast majority of the home fans then sing a bastardised version of that song as the game kicks off, most refusing to sit down until they have finished belting it out. Manufactured Fan Tifo Choreography - right there, hiding in plain shite...

Should the home team win, the said DJ will, at the end of the game cue up another track, a Status Quo version of a track recorded by John Fogerty, not even the original, a cover version. As the players salute the fans, the fans join in with another bastardised version of that Fogerty tune. All manufactured. All glorious. Not Shite.

There is nothing to be afraid of in organised Terrace Culture. We've done it at The Lane since I started going in the 60s. Let's not be this grudging, narrow, whining, oooohhhh it's shite fanbase.

Please.

Fuck me I sound old, but it's this bollocks that makes me extremely apprehensive about bringing my 5 year old to his first game.
Look I've re read this thread and want to make clear the throwing of flares/smoke bombs, etc is unacceptable. I think they make for a decent spectacle and boy does it need livening up at home games. It's never been safer for kids to go to a game in this country. It's as though kids didn't go in the late 70s, early 80s and survive. We've got an entitled generation that like to moan about absolutely everything. As other posters have pointed out it happens safely in 90% of other countries where safety is generally an afterthought, unlike here.

Think you might have read too much into my comment. It was just the idea of someone coming over the tannoy and saying “right everyone, the man stood over there will shortly be setting off a flare, everyone please stand back and clap him when it’s finished” made me chuckle.

But, how do you think Pyro displays are arranged at foreign football grounds? Exactly like that, just not in English.

(Not aimed at you particularly) A lot of English Fanbases have become sneering, whining, narrow. Refusing to embrace anything but an ever decreasing "I don't like stuff" vision.

Two things have been decided....
One - oooohhhh it looks brilliant in those foreign grounds with all the flags & limbs & noise & hostility & intimidation & that & gives the home team such a lift.
Two - we're not having any of the shite that makes that possible here, thank you very much.

Of course I have, but these days, with the state of my health, I would tend to avoid some of these or ensure I have space to move quickly away from the smoke.

However, in a packed football stand it is difficult, if not impossible, to quickly avoid the smoke from a flare.

I suppose you think I should stop going to the Lane.

I don`t wish it on you, but in your later life, you perhaps could be in the same condition. You might not have the same opinion then.

"Get over yourself", not a very friendly comment !

Meant as a genuine comment, why don't you go on the BL upper? I always go on there, cracking view, best in the ground, no dickheads throwing flares, to be fair there's not that many of us up there anyway.

I'm hearing that some.of the longstanding independent fans away coaches are reconsidering who they let on. Moving away from "all comers if there is room" more towards "tried & trusted regulars only". Partly because they are getting pissed off by the behaviour of young 'uns they barely know. Cans on the coach. Bringing mother back to the bus after the game. Shenanigans at Service Station & pub stops. And partly because the coach companies are giving them warnings that they won't be able to hire coaches from them in the future (because of behaviour).

There are these knock on consequences from some of the awayday nonsense.

I've heard this too, one of them saying no one under 25 allowed to bring booze on. It won't stop them being dicks though.

The ones that I've been on in the past were the same. You either had to know someone or be vouched for. Didn't mean you didn't act daft, just meant that your mates could tell you to stop acting daft or you weren't going again.

And while we are at it, can we have a safe kidney punching section? I’m sick of the dirty looks I get.

Think the most choreographied foreign grounds are those where someone with a drum and a loud haler stands on some scaffolding with his back to the game screaming something whilst banging on the drum so loud you can't actually hear the crowd!

In my overseas experience, that is a great way of organising & choreographing an atmosphere. IMHO better than using the PA like we do at The Lane.

US soccer has people called ‘capos’ who do this. They are social media tarts. I was at a Minnesota United match a while back where some lads started a song and got told to shut up because it wasn’t next on the list.
