One of many was Oldham away when against the odds we ended their incredible home record on the plastic, followed by great night out in Manchester.

Thought there would only be me on here who was there, small world.

You're telling me! In 1973 I went to Wembley for England v. Poland (the famous Tomaceski 'clown' game). I'd already booked to go to (West) Germany in the following years WC so was more pissed off than normal with the result.

I was at Shirecliffe College at the time and saw a poster on a notice board for a minibus trip to Germany so I booked. 11 of us (none of whom I knew), but had a great fortnights travelling and boozing (with the odd match thrown in!).

Many years later (about '93), I took the seat I now occupy in the South Stand to find out that, in the next seat, was Tony - the driver of the minibus! (Believed in 'Six Degrees of Separation' ever since.)

Apart from the obvious ones like Forest play off semi and wins over Wednesday at Hillsborough amongst my favourites are a 6-3 away win at Luton towards the end of Bassets reign, a 4-0 away win at Stoke under Kendall and the 2-1 play off semi 2nd leg win at Ipswich also under Kendall.

Forest play off game - never felt so physically drained from a game

Wednesday - Bobby Davison game, Dane scoring after a couple of minutes helped calm the nerves. Awesome atmosphere. My first Hillsborough derby.

Liverpool - first game back in the top flight, deafening on the Kop and never been involved in such mayhem and surging when we scored. Also remember a chant of "We're proud of you" at the end which made me feel all emotional

Forest - when we won after what seemed like an eternity and had a 5 goal second half. Bryson hitting both posts with a volley. Mass pitch invasion at the end like we'd won the European Cup

Newcastle - League Cup when we were in the third and we won 3-0, they were in the top flight and just spent more on Dave Beasant than we'd spent in about five years combined. My first game on the kop. My first game without adult supervision. The game that really made me think "I quite like this, this could become a regular thing"

and the 2-1 play off semi 2nd leg win at Ipswich also under Kendall.

It finished 2-2 :D

This just edges out the Forest match for excitement and sheer enjoyment. It was the evening after my first GCSE exam and I legged it out of the hall at the end, and just made it off the tube into my Uncle's car in time for the journey. The car broke down so we had to switch to my Aunt's car. Eventually made it to Portman Road and the match was incredible. A great goal by Kat (was it over the line or not?!?), a good comeback by Ipswich, Andy Walker scoring the equaliser which eventually put us through oon away goals and Nick Henry getting sent off for kicking Mauricio Taricco, something mny people would have gladly done at the time!

I believe that was the last time away goals counted double in play off matches as they realised it effecitvely gave the lower placed side an advantage as they could potentially have an extra 30 minutes to score an away goal.

I went there too. Looking back, I wonder how my dad managed to get tickets for him and me! We went cos we were dreaming of TC playing in the World Cup final. I was in tears after the game. At that time England mattered more to me a lot more than now. I cried too when the Germans beat us 3-2 in the 1970 World Cup

Don't get that. Didn't the first game finish 1-1 so at 180 minutes it was 3-3. If Ipswich had scored they would have won. If United had scored Ipswich would have to score twice to go through. Ipswich had 180 minutes to score more goals than United. Following your logic we would all end up in penalty shoot outs if the scores were level at 180 minutes. How then did it advantage the lower placed side? Because Ipswich didn't score more at Bramall Lane is down to them or Alan Kelly/Simon Tracey not where we finished in the league.

Hell of a game though. Didn't they split the away fans up that night? Very nerve wracking but cracking result.

leeds home around 1974.. midweek night match.. finished a 1 - 1 draw
mates dad got us some freebies on the john street stand, right in the middle of the leeds fans
we went behind after about five minutes and from then on in true 'dirty leeds' style they proceeded to time waste and pull every trick in the book of gamesmanship and some not in the book.. we were getting serious beef from the leeds fans even though they were blokes and we were about ten.. typical.. the second half started late (due to all of the battling on the kop i think) and we were still one down as we went into extra time.. anyways a timed firework display for the end of the game went off at its normal time and the teams were still playing.. there was smoke everywhere.. steve cammack (or steve cack as my mate used to call him) made his usual sub appearance and picked up the ball on what seemed the half way line and line up for a shot.. we were thinking 'oh no' but the he slammed the bastard home from what seemed to my ten year old eyes to be forty yards out.. after all of what had gone on it seemed like a victory.. everyone was going mental and some random bloke picked me up over his head.. the leeds fans were furious and so was billy bremner.. heh.. we had to be escorted out of the 'leeds section' for our own safety.. i think due to that draw they lost the title to derby but i could be wrong

I think away goals would still have come into play after extra time when we played Forest six years later. Agreed it was an advantage though, away goals count 'double', yet one team got 90 minutes to score them and one team got 120. How does it work in the Champions League, do they just take away goals into account after the 90 mins?

I was there, probably one of the greatest rearguard actions by a United side. From what i can remember we barely mustered two shots on target all night, whilst Ipswich battered us with countless shots. Alan Kelly picked up an injury but we couldn't replace him for whatever reason, and Nicky Henry got sent off.

Fantastic night. For once I don't think I was alone in what was a pretty hardcore following that night thinking we had no chance which made it all the more remarkable - of course they were just setting us up for a bigger fall in the final.

Got to be V leeds in playoffs, just for my fave goal of all time, just got shivvers watching it again, and again, and again

Second would be 3-1 at the sty in early 90's I've never been to a game with an atmosphere like that since. Bring back flares and giant flags!

Its about time we had some more memories like these

One of the reasons that Ipswich fans dislike SUFC so much. Tehy felt they were robbed.

Sheffield United 5-3 Cardiff City. 0-0 at half-time who saw that coming? included nuddy hat-trick and jack lester doing a gazza. memorable.

Easter Tuesday 1975. Cammack scored from inside the penalty box at kop end, not from 40 yards out

I was so nervous that night that my legs gave way from under me and I had to sit down. A feeling only otherwise eperienced when, bizarrely, Burnley played Hull is 1984 (and we went up on goals scored).

OOps, yeah, spent most of that season quite refreshed, I think that was the lucky whiskey season :)

For about 15 season's from 1995 until last year, i think virtually every season was a lucky Whiskey season, as well as lucky JD, Vodka and Bacardi seasons!!! Then before the bar opened on the kop we had the Power Coke season's.

Mind you it was a good thing the Power Coke came to a stop, as we would usually come out of the match absolutely slaughtered. It never used to matter if the Power Coke ran dry as there was always the late and much missed Happy Hippy nearby with his own version of Power Coke, Russian Oranges!!!

I've enjoyed a few games a lot. Beating Liverpool at home in the League Cup semi first leag was magic. Great atmosphere and good performance. Really enjoyed United stuffing a Man City (just after Alan Ball had got them relegeated) team with Giorgio Kinkladze at the Lane in the late 90's. Mainly because they were presumed to walk back up to the Prem. In our relegation season in 93/94 I enjoyed the come back victory against West Ham (Whitehouse scoring a screamer just before half time to make it 1-2 and then us winning 3-2) and also beating Newcastle 2-0 at BDTBL (blake putting in one of those unplayable performances that he did on rare occassions and it looking like we were certain to stay up!?). However my favourite match as a Blade was on 10th of May 1997 ......

As samply, bushey and brownie have all talked about Ipswich away in 1997 was my favourite game. What a night! The journey started off at 3pm. Picked up from Rawmarsh Comp gates at 3:10 by my dad and uncle (I was 14/15 at the time). Uncle's foot flat to the floor in his Vauxhall Calibra, after detour becuase M1 was shut. Arrived in Ipswich and it was a cranvial atmosphere. After they had come to Bramall Lane and got a score draw, they were favourites to go through. They were red hot favourites and would easily turn us over at Portman Road. But, SUFC had not read ther script. Belarus' number 9 had not read the scropt and smashed a shot from the edge of the box and it thundered against the bar and bounced down on the line. We were directly in line with the goal line (as was the linesmane) and it definately went over. The goal was given and suddenly we had a game on our hands.

Ipswich came back into the game and showed their class. They absolutely battered us! I would be interested to see the stats, because I can't really remember SUFC having many clear cuts chances. Alan Kelly was on fire and Chris Short, Carl Tiler, David Holdswoth and Mitch Ward deserved knighting. Ipsiwch went 2-1 ahead and looked tio be heading through. The United fans were undetered. I remember the 'Howard Kendall's red and white army .... S-U-F-C' going on for around 30 minutes. We smashed the home support completely out sang them all evening. With not long to go, Kendall brought on the fox in the box Andy Walker. He scored and it was disallowed. Then with the clock ticking down he popped up and poked a ball home. I remember going absolutely mental. Wave upon wave of Ipswich attack came upon us. In the last minute of normal time they had a free kick (Sedgley?) that smashed again the post and flew back out, with Kelly beaten. Kelly got injured and played on (Kendall never used a sub keeper) and (after a stupid stamp on Tarrico by Nick Henry) United were redced to 10 men. We held on. Just! Amnd I think Ipswich were right to feel that they were robbed. Still, brilliant evening and my favourite as a United fan.

Fantastic night. For once I don't think I was alone in what was a pretty hardcore following that night thinking we had no chance which made it all the more remarkable - of course they were just setting us up for a bigger fall in the final.

The build up to the game inside the ground was like an Ipswich victory party. I didn't know any Blades fan who thought we had any chance at all.

My major memories of that night:

- the hush that descended when Kachouro gave us the lead. There was even a bit of a pause from the Blades fans as the ball bounced down and came out. It was not in the script, as Olle says. And I was also sitting in line with the goal, and there was no doubt it was in.

- time stopping when Sedgeley hit the post with the free kick. Luckily, the ball fell to Whitehouse and as he brought it clear the full time whistle went...

- Kelly limping around with great courage

- a United player getting booked every 30 seconds or so in extra time

- Blades fans banging on seats and on the back of the stand as the end of extra time approached.

- the euphoria of victory (well, sort of victory) over a team I despise.

- got on the train back to London surrounded by disgruntled Ipswich fans. Some drunken local girls got on, and one of them started to make fun of their defeat. Without a word, two of them picked her up and threw her out through the open door (I hasten to add the train wasn't moving). After that, I don't think I looked up from my programme until we got to Stratford...

That game is certainly my all time favourite away match and one of the few times United have genuinely come through in a big game with the odds stacked against us. The only other time that I can remember them doing this is the Coventry quarter final in 1998, and even then Kachouro should have won it for us....

I believe that was the last time away goals counted double in play off matches as they realised it effecitvely gave the lower placed side an advantage as they could potentially have an extra 30 minutes to score an away goal.

The comical thing about this is that Ipswich were instrumental in getting the rule changed, but they got screwed over by the new rules as they later had a playoff semi where they would have won on away goals, but the game went to penalties instead and they lost.

At certain games you get reminded how special it is to be a Blade. Suddenly all the shit the club causes you is forgotten.

Ipswich was one of those increasingly rare nights of raw passion, togetherness, beating the odds...

Another favourite - even though we lost - was Norwich away in the cup when they were high flying. Great performance by the players but our fans gave astonishing support that day and the spontaneous applause that broke out a few minutes before the end for the players still gets me emotional.

You're bring back the memories Rev!! :) Hairs still stand up on the back of my neck when I think about it. And Tuns, you are right: there are occassions when it is really special to be a Blade. That night on May the 10th was the most special for me.

(Like Revolution) I remember time stopping still on several occassions. They were:
- Katchouro's goal. It seemed like an eternity (though to be fair it was instantaneous) for the linesman to raise his flag.
- Sedgley's shot. Cracking the post, but time went into slow motion when he hit it (we all thought it was in).
- Andy Walker's equaliser. After his first goal was disallowed, time seemed to go still. Despite all the other United-ites going mental, I made absolutely sure that the linesman and ref had given the goal. Then I went absolutely fucking crackers.

Coventry away in 98(?) in the FA cup was excellent. Dion Dublin was on fire and Coventry a decent side with Strachan at the helm and Huckerby ripping teams apart. We were given no chance. But Marcelo scored a belter and we got a result. The worst part (as Rev states) is we should have won. A long aimless ball by Stuart in the dying seconds of the game was collected by Ogrisovich. He dallied and out of nowhere came the man from Minsk. The Kat was in on an open goal and we had come to Highfield Road and won. But Katchouro took an age and big Oggy did well to scramble back and deny him. The only times I have had such disbelief we did not score where Saunders away in at Sunderland in the play off semi final (an excellent experience and electric atmopsohere) and Peshcy's header that was saved by Seaman (in another great day out). That day at Highflield Road was great and the 5k or so United fans that made the trip were out in full voice. I remember the whole away end standing up and singing 'Will you come to Bramall Lane' as the Covenery fans trooped out. The replay was a pretty good night to be a Blade. Holdsworth's dramatic late scissor kick and then Kelly's revenge (saving Dublin's pen after Dublin scored at Highfield Road) and United going through on pens.

The Arsenal game in the FA cup when Veart scored in the mid 90's was a cracker too. A 3 sided Bramall Lane absolutely rocking when we put the Gooners to the sword.

I'd also like to congratulate judge, for making his first useful post on the forum. It has been a long time coming, but it's nice that our favourite scouser has finally contributed something. A sincere thanks from me judgey owd mucker. Isn't that better than your previous toilet mouthed antics.

Playoffs?

If I had to choose just 1 it would be Shefield United 5 Cardiff City 1 - April 1971. Words can't do it justice.

Mine too - I can't remember if Cardiff were above us or just below, but winning made promotion virtually certain

>Cammack scored from inside the penalty box at kop end, not from 40 yards out
'to my childhood eyes'.. there's a clue in there somewhere i'm sure :).. it was definitely outside the box.. and that fish i nearly caught.. it was definitely 10 feet long:rolleyes:
did you go to that one silent?.. 'kin reight match warnit?'

The Ipswich game was a great night (like alco my legs gave way in extra time and I didn't watch much of the last 5 minutes as it was so tense) but, as with Forest, the result ended up meaning diddly squat as we fucked up the bigger game.

My favourite awy game? Leicester 1990.

The team were the only ones to get to a playoff final without winning a game in the semis. It was 1 1 at lane, 2 2 at dipswich.
