Our fans mostly come from Rotherham

But don't you find that about many football fans, be they Wednesday, United, or some other supporters? They don't deal in facts - they haven't a clue about statistics (but they quote them all the time and make the most ridiculous assumptions based on them) - and they are full of superstition. It all makes for a very entertaining yet frustrating debate.

One example on this board last season - those fans who were clamouring for Matty Done to be in the team absolutely invented a fact to suit their argument. They said "we didn't lose when he was in the team" . They totally ignored the first few win-less games of the season in which he played every match.

It's a good game this. We can all do it. Think of something you want to believe is true - then make something up as if it's a stone wall fact - and you'll quickly have others agreeing with you.

I can't say I saw most posts on this topic, but weren't most people saying it was better to stick with Billy and Done upfront, so Billy could profit from Done's workrate, than with Billy and Clarke. Done wasn't upfront in any of those four games. Him going up top was a big part of the season's turn around, it seemed to me. Anyway, I do agree with your overall point!

I remember that amazing thread on Owlstalk when they were saying what areas of Sheffield were United and Wednesday. Basically we had S2 and they had everywhere else. Amazing how similar our crowds are when we are picking them up from such a small pool compared to them
They definitely have the smallest gene pool

I've lived almost all my life in Pig-dominated north Sheffield, as have many Unitedites.
The Southey coaches are never short of travelling fans.

I could actually walk to the Deathtrap in 10-15 minutes......if I was a fucking idiot.

Abit like myself...

born in Derry NI & raised on park hill after getting over here..... moved to Parsons Cross/Southey Green at age 10-11. The pigs were everywere & the stench was over whelming. I just knew I would not fit in with 'them'

I was always glad when the academy and training ground moved to this side of the city in the late 90s as I felt we could then start to build a nice fan base north of Burngreave.

With regard to the OP, it would have been worthwhile to point out to these ignorant porkers that proportionately, United have more fans walk to their matches than any other club. Which would suggest a significant element of those who follow United actually live within walking distance of Bramall Lane which, unlike their rusting shithole, is actually in Sheffield and always has been!

Have to say, I find the 50-60 age group of that lot the most ignorant (in the educated sense of the word) and deluded of the lot of them. They're not just a different breed, they're a different race altogether. When you actually confront their delusions with facts, their eyes glaze over and they start dribbling and mumbling words such as "big six", "Europe" and of course "massive".

They really are an odd bunch.

Born in Rotherham - lived in Canada and Rotherham and Sheffield, now Hemel but a blade through and through, was a season ticket holder for a long time until my move down south, looking forward to bringing the Mrs and Watford born kids up to BDTBL so they can have the hairs stand up on there arms as they walk down to take there seat, I miss BDTBL :(

I think in terms of fans who attend matches regularly/semi regularly (using the broadest possible definition I'm saying any thing between 4-5 home games a year to diehards) both are more or less the same, probably with us edging it. Both draw fans from Rotherham/Dearne Valley, pigs draw some in from Wombwell, Birdwell, Hoyland etc and we draw some from Chesterfield, North East Derbyshire and North Notts. Its probably true to say that areas like Aston, Brinsworth and Treeton are Blades strongholds almost as much as they are for the Millers but to say we draw most of our support from outside the city is typical pigonomics

What I've noticed being in my mid 30s is that the pigs have a lot of residual 'glory supporters' in my age bracket (I use this in the loosest possible sense) from their handful of relatively successful years in the early 1990s . These tend to be the sort who switch between saying, when they are languishing in League One for instance, tend to say they "used to follow Wednesday, but don't even check the scores these days" (or they maybe have Chelsea/Man U/Arsenal as their 2nd team) to crowing all over social media if they fluke a win in the derby or plastering up pictures of Wembley last year (one of about 10 games they've been to since 1993). They have absolutely no shame whatsoever which tends to fit with the whole 'massive' ethos (see also having a band, lights on phones etc). Relatively speaking (and I can't emphasise the relatively enough) I tend to find that the more bareable pig fans are the ones who go regularly. You also tend to see a lot of scrubbers proudly shopping in Hillsborough around 3:30pm in their pig shirts on match days but somehow haven't managed to find their way to the sty.

Our fans tend to be the other (normal) way round. Those who go regularly/as often as work allows are the most fanatical/vocal/obvious whereas the more part time/arm chair element tend to acknowledge that's what they are.

I was in the newly reopened Three Tuns yesterday afternoon and btw, the beer is superbly kept and the landlord is a Blade.

We sat near 5 Wednesdayites in their 50s/60s. A group of blokes having a few beers and they seemed and looked sensible enough but then I overheard:

" Most of United's fans are from out of Sheffield, Thousands come from Rotherham and when Rotherham are shit they all go the Lane"

"Yes that's right. Kel Brook went to the New York the week before his fight and even though they knew he was a Blade they all cheered him"

These two statements of 'absolute fact, were met with murmurs and nods of agreement,

Fortunately I managed to blot out any more drivel,

Clearly the people you overheard have never heard of the Rotherham Owls which regularly have their flag up at the Sty and particularly when they play Rotherham. I know a few people from Rotherham and there is a split three ways from those that I know between us, Wednesday and Rotherham.

North East Derbyshire is definitely more United from my experience as Pinchy said. Where I am in Shiregreen its more Wednesday, obviously, but that said, you say many United fans here too.

Originally being from Rotherham (hence the username), I can confirm that there are a lot of Blades - Swinton, Kilnhurst, Rawmarsh, Parkgate and Brinsworth probably being the biggest areas - apart from those in the half Rotherham, half Sheffield areas likes Swallownest, Aston etc.

There are a few Wednesdayites about too, sadly. Though you tend to find these more towards Barnsley or Doncaster (Mexborough for example).

I was in Wetherspoon's in Mexborough recently, wearing a Blades shirt from a few years back. The barman made some smart arse comment along the lines of 'Ah, all those old shirts are coming back now they're promoted'.
Assuming he was a pig, I found his comment quite amusing given that when they made the playoffs the other year I thought Chupa-Chups and Sanderson had re-sponsored them, when in fact it was all those shirts that had been thrown in the wardrobe at the turn of the century only to be remembered when the cunts had a sniff of success.

Before leaving, I'd have ordered an expensive and complicated drink, then walked out whilst he was making it. Smug prick.

I was always under the impression that parkgate and rawmarsh were staunch blade areas . They were the Blades who invented the " greasy chip butty " song afterall ;)

As for other areas in the Rotherham catchment areas such as kiveton , North and South Anston, Dinnington , Swallonest , Aston etc etc theres some top Blades from those areas but when it comes to supping ale they're reight fuckin lightweights and tight fisted twats too :p
I'm an anston blade and it'always been blades. As a young un after the Leicester game I was in awe of the flags/banners on most houses.
At dinnington school even though wednesday were quite good and we were struggling all my mates were blades as were most of the school. Those same lads are still my mates taking our kids.

I also attended the Dinnington Finishing School for Gentlemen.

In 81/82 unofficial 53-seater coaches used to go from the Falcon (now a curry house). Not many shirts in those days, but the orange backed NCB donkey jackets were de-rigueur. Some right pirates on board and plenty more in buses, cars and one particularly notorious electrician's van...

Even after the low of Boxing Day 79, all the DirtyLeeds fans coming back to school in January with brand new Wendy scarves, there was still a solid hardcore of match going Blades.

I was taking the piss out of a pig mate yesterday afternoon and he said "the Rotherham/Blades love in has started again I see". They are very bitter that someone likes us more than them but don't have the self-awareness to see it's because we are a more likeable bunch than they are due to our lack of perceived massiveness.

I'm sat reading Page 1 of this thinking - I didn't know Three Tuns had closed 🤷‍♂️

Since I posted in 2017, it closed again and re-opened (at least once). Lovely little boozer in a uniquely shaped building (ignoring some New York copycat thingy).

Keep up at the back there!

As a Blade out in the wilds I would be fascinated to know just how many at the average match day are city dwellers and how many live outside my spiritual homeland.

Worked on railways for years with mainly lads from rawmarsh , kimberworth masborough areas. Not 1 of em were a pig. All either Rotherham or blades. Worked with some lads from swinton also blades. Sheffield is very much 50:50 blades n pigs. No matter how people wanna dress it up. They’ll say it’s 60/40 them we will say other way round. Fact is it’s more like 50/50. But from my experience working with lads from Rotherham donny barnsley areas it seems to me theres a lot of blades from them areas. Especially Rotherham. Good lads aswell mite I add

We are all from within Sunny Sheff's glorious boundaries, apart from you, you bog dwelling simple minded yokel pointing-at-aeroplanes-peasant.
This is statistically proven by, .......er......., statistics.

Well, you did ask....

I'll have you know we even have running water out here in deepest Lincs now - it's called the Trent!

What is this "aeroplane" you speak of? Smacks of witchcraft to me.

My grandad was a manc and started watching united with mates (while still keeping tabs on city) after he moved here in the fifties. Both Sheff teams will probably have fans coming in from places like Donnie (especially if they go down to L2).

An exiled Swinton Blade here.

Loads of United fans in Swinton/Kilnhurst/Rawmarsh/Parkgate. Quite a lot too out in the Dearne Valley - Wath, Bolton etc.

Might have changed now, but growing up in the area, I always felt United outnumbered Wednesday. Wednesday tended to have more fans from Mexborough/Conisbrough - heading out to Donny.
