Take your best player off and put useless Doyle on at the side of the hapless Monty and it certainly helps to hand the initiative back to the opposition.

The best player that was absolutely knackered from having to play all over the field due to his hapless team mates you mean?

I do think you are right though, I'd have subbed everyone except Collins, Phillips and Clarke. Sadly it's against the rules.

A one legged McDonald would have been a better proposition today than Monty. No excuse whatsoever for taking him off, once again like he did when taking Williamson off against Wednesday (because he had been booked FFS!) the manager may have cost us the game

I assumed you meant Clarke when you said best player.

What about the poor first 45 minutes before Wilson made any substitutions?

I think we've seen Wilson's first real mistake being exposed again today. The keeper - a season of ineptitude was enough, surely. Surely he was warned. Then we carry on regardles until it's presented on a weekly basis, and he's dropped. Not becuase he's fucking shite, but because of " a fear of a negative reaction by the fans". Then our 17 year old keeper looks, well, like a 17 year old keeper and the twat on Radio Sheffield says we got what we asked for. Like a replacement is like winning the lottery.

Seriously, is a new keeper too much too ask? We brought in 2 forwards (nice one BTW) at the drop of a hat. We've been keeperless for 18 months.

Sort it Wilson, or many people's patience will quickly wear thin.

Defence needs sorting out and its been showing for weeks. Collins and maguire along with simmo are dropping too many Bollocks and its costing us.

Collins was superb today ,the other 3 defenders weren't ,Macdonald was superb ,Monty and Quinn weren't ,Phillips and Clarke were superb ,Cresswell was dogshit. Keeper ,too much too young.

Can't argue with that , how do you think the manager did?

He's done well with his loan players but I think he needs to look at resting Lowton and Maguire for a bit of experience. I also think its no exageration to say our season depends on us finding a decent keeper in the next 7 days.

Wilson has known for 5 months that a new keeper was urgently required and not done anything about it, one of many things he's got wrong during his short tenancy.

He wanted one pre season ,he knew then which is why Duke trialled but I think he had to look at Macdonald ,Williams Clarke and Phillips as his priority and hope Simmonsen who has experience would step up to the plate. Its easy with hindsight but he has been left with some shit and and it will take time to change the whole team. We have problems all over the pitch which he is patching up ,but the likes of Montgomery Simmonsen ,Quinn, Cresswell and Evans will be on big money and he will be under pressure for them to play. How else can you explain Cresswell still getting a game. Another big worry is the disappearance of Quinn in the last few games.

Lowton has been poor since he signed his contract for me. Both are talented, but like you say, would benefit from a rest.

He's tried to bring people in, but it hasn't come off as yet.

You got the impression from trialling Duke and Alnwick that he did want another keeper, but that funds wise we couldn't afford one. He pretty much had to beg McCabe to give McDonald a 1 year deal.

How do you know and who has he tried to bring in?

Pretty much on the button that Sitters. Too many of the above are coasting along on the last days of the Gravy Train.

I know what you mean Raul but coasting along suggests they have another gear does it? They are just useless and cannot believe their luck imo. I don't see any lack of effort which 'coasting' would imply or infer or whatever the word is.

With the exception of Evans, I'd say all the others have in the past performed better than they are currently so they clearly have had another gear, but you're right, whether they've still got one now is clearly moot.

Wouldn't it be better to wait until the transfer window and then buy a decent keeper? Could Simmo come back in and perform until then (having been suitably chastened).

Heartily agree re. your point on resting Lowton and Maguire particularly. I like them both but both have cost us points recently and are garlanded with praise whilst Simmo has been slated...

The lack of experience and the naivity of our young goalkeeper was brutally exposed today against a distinctly average Exeter City side, i feel a bit sorry for George Long today because for me he should never have been given the spot in the first place, if some of people who post on here and who have seen him play regular knew that he wasn't ready for first team league football why couldn't the manager and coaching staff? The procurement of a goalkeeper should now be the No1 priority before the trip to Stevenage next week.

What with? Wilson had to beg to get a 1 year deal for MacDonald, so we're hardly flush with enough money to go out and buy another keeper. Many people have stated that we want better players, and I agree with them, but it's not as simple as stating that we want them. We have to be able to afford them, and that means either players on big money being sold, which is highly unlikely, or McCabe digging very deep into his pocket, which is again highly unlikely.

These "better" players don't hang around waiting for Sheffield United to sign them for thruppence ha'penny and a packet of Toffos. They need to be paid for. We aren't in the position to pay for them, which is why we've got two dodgy keepers - Long, dodgy because of inexperience that comes with being young, and Simmo, dodgy because he's crap.

So we have to keep bimbling along with what we've got unless Wilson can either get a keeper in on loan, which puts us back in the position we have been in in the past of relying on other sides players far too much, a position we are pretty much in now despite statements that we wouldn't go down that road, or we sign a good permanent keeper. Which we won't, because that's out of our price range.

Some expect top quality players to be brought in, but you can't shop in Harrod's on a Netto budget. And at the moment our budget isn't even Netto money, it's more like Shoplifter's Discount. That is down to one man, and that's Kevin McCabe. We need to spend some money to get out of this division. Not spunk it away on more and more loans, but buy some decent players. We've already missed the opportunity in the summer, but we'll also spend bugger all in January too.

Wilson has done a decent job with the resources he has available to him, but it's going to be very hard work, and some of it won't be pleasant.

At this rate promotion looks a dim and distant dream. And unless we spend, and spend wisely and bigger than last summer, it's only going to be getting dimmer.

Some are talking of a relegation battle and its all doom and gloom ,Pig fans are talking promotion and World domination. They are 3 points above us. Perspective.

Relegation? I'll save that for next season (from L1) but the perspective is that Wendy fans, quite rightly from what I saw at BDTBL, have some hope. We are just a shambolic rabble, reliant on loans.

Agreed, but replacing a keeper is far cheaper than a striker. In typicl United fashion we've managed to find the most expensive shite one on the planet, but I can't believe there aren't better keepers out there who we gcould go for. Generally, I agree, we're stuck with what we've got over the rest of the pitch.

I think Wilson has a better squad (certainly with the Blackpool Lads) than Micky Adams had, Wilson is operating a division lower.

Just how decent a job DW is doing is still up in the air for me, still time for it to go totally tits up.

The job McCabe and his Son are doing is pathetic .....

what did you see to give you the impression wednesday fans have some hope ?

Got behind their side, stayed with em, saw their side dominate for long sections against the neighbours, very unlucky to be 2 down, went completely mental when they scored realising the importance of it in terms of city pride and promotion hopes, 10k odd turned up at Hillsboro to watch and all in all a feeling that they have maybe turned the corner after 12 or so years of outright misery. Other than that nowt Judgey my old mate.

Are you somehow denying that Wendy are improving from a ridiculous low point of last season? Equally, are you denying that we are on a slippery slope of decline?

So you are telling me there isn't a decent promising keeper in the English, Irish, European leagues or even or non-league who desn't want to step up and play for Sheff Utd? Not even for £1500 per week or whatever we pay our reserve keeper.

PS what has happened to Aksalu. Is he still here? He has been more injured than Ebbrell hasn't he? He should take a long hard look at himselfand think about quitting if he can't remain injury free long enough to challenge for a first team place despite the incumbent being garbage...

just wondered ,obvious to see where your allegiances lie after reading that

.

Remember, however much we find a keeper for, we still have to pay the existing ones. Not that that leves us with any option.
