pure speculation, theres times you have to say good goal, overall thought for a league debut game , he did fineAs I replied to someone on Twitter, didn't have much to do really, not many saves, the odd one right down his throat.

Though it does illustrate the fact that if we switch off and don't defend from the front to the back, it matters not who is in the net.

I've rarely seen a keeper have such a quiet game. The goal and then one other shot straight at him. I don't recall him even having to come for a single cross. I've not seen the goal on tv but at the time I thought it was a really well hit shot but it did appear to go in the middle of the goal so I thought Long could have done better.

I think it went across him to the far post. Simmo may have had more of a chance as he is taller but it was a well taken shot.
As mentioned above, he didn't have much to do.

Fair enough .....not always easy to tell at the match....I'd certainly stick with Long & see how he does when busier.

Saw the game and thought it was unsavable. No fault with keeper. Not saying that Simmo wouldn't have got a reflex hand to it, but one of the best shots I've seen this season.
Our first was magic...down to Creswells well taken opportunity. Everything clicked in place. More of that please.

Long is 6'4" according to the official website and 2 inches taller than Simmo.
I don't think either of them could have stopped it, although I haven't seen a replay.
MK didn't put a single cross into the "corridor of uncertainty", so we didn't get chance to see how Long would have dealt with it.
Good decision by Wilson to play Long though as it took away some of the negativity/anxiety surrounding Simmo.
I notice Simmo didn't even warm up on the pitch at half time, I presume he did it indoors instead?
Two very well worked goals we scored. Clarke, Phillips (and Quinn) have that bit of skill that makes the difference in tight matches.

I disagree. I thought their goal was saveable. A hard shot but it was in his range, and the type of shot that you'd have expected Kenny, Tracey, Kelly etc to get a hand to. Apart from that Long had no saves to make apart from a low shot that he held well. He didn't come out flapping at crosses which was good, but apart from his kicking I could have put in a similar performance. The defence protected him very well. I have no doubt Wilson will play him on Saturday. IMO he might be a longer term solution in a year or two but he is too young and inexperienced to be our first team keeper for the rest of this season. We need a loanee keeper ASAP.

Agreed - if Long had got any sort of touch it would have ripped his fingers out of their sockets.
I was pleased he stayed on his line for crosses, corners etc and the defenders did seem more at ease dealing with them.

he had no chance with the goal. I think with a Morgan type in front of him he would be fine. Cant see Simmo playing again. Booing him when his name was announced is not acceptable

I'd stick with Long in goal. So what if he's 17, if he plays well enough that's all that matters. People should get a place in the side based on form and up until the point he makes silly mistakes he should stay there.

I was right behind the shot in the John Street Stand and I dont think he stood. The MK Dons striker struck it early and very cleanly into the corner of the goals.
The important thing with Long is that with each game, he will gain more and more experience and confidence.
The best goalkeepers all play first team football at an early age, the best comparison I can give is of Craig Gordon. He came into the Hearts team at the same age as George Long and we were 4-0 down on his debut within 30 mins!!!! 12 months later he was the Scotland keeper and 4 years after his debut he went to Sunderland for £9.5m.
At least George is starting on the basis that its well nigh impossible to be worse than Steve Simonsen.

Simmo has one main fault, namely his judgement on when to come for balls (and, very occasionally, his distribution). Other than that he's good keeper. He needs a fresh start at a new club asap to resurrect his career. (If he does move on, he's bound to play a blinder against us in the future)

I wasn't at the match last night but reports say that Long did not have a great deal to do.
Maybe, with such a young keeper in goal, the defence and midfield worked hard to protect him - which is really what they should be doing week in and week out.

We can give it 20 games to see if he's good enough. After that,we might have a gem on our hands, or we might have destroyed him and our promotion prospects.
Wilson's persistence with Simmo suggests he's got real concerns about Long. Further, history suggests 17 is too young for keepers, though a good example to the opposite is presented above.
Get someone on Loan. Simmo needs replacing at the end of the season anyway. Let's start the process now.
