We've only been in it six times previously since the war.

Worse memory - that awful 3-0 defeat at Altrincham in a replay in 81-82

Best memory - 5-1 win at Wrexham in 83-84 with Edwards getting four.

Post your memries here...

I'm sure you can tell us the other four then?

If you insist
79-80 Burscough H W3-0
80-81 Stockport A D0-0 Replay W3-2
82-83 Hull A D1-1 Replay W2-0
88-89 Mansfield A D1-1 Replay W2-1

i remember the burscough game, coupla thousand blades walking round looking for the ground (was a nice little ground btw)
i also remember going back via manchester picadilly, bout 4-500 blades then on one platform a train full of man ure fans pulled in, on other a load of man city fans with us in the middle, thought we were going to get cheesed (like getting creamed but lasts much longer) fortunately they only had eyes (and fists) for each other. nice to be able to sit and watch tho :)

I went to Mansfield. As I remember it snowed and was bloody freezing. A mate said we would sit in the stand as it was under cover only for the wind to be blowing right in our faces

You can't remember it that well, it was played at the Lane!

Burscough were drawn at home, but opted to switch it to Bramall Lane to make more money and were no doubt satisfied with their share of the 14,000+ gate.

Was the Wrexham game Tomlinson's debut?

It was indeed.

I remember the Mansfield game, it was the one where Simon Webster broke his leg.

It's making me feel old when there and Memries threads, and i'm one of the half who are old enough to remember!

The big conundrum is surely why nobody on this site seems to be able to spell "memories".

It's a tradition on here Broomers spelling it that way.

Bert was also at the Mansfield game when Webster broke his leg, you could hear the crack clearly from the terrace when it snapped.

I was there! Weren't the pigs at home same day against non-league opposition too (I think they won 5-0, more than us anyway). We scored early and put the nerves to bed. Dont remember the other goals.

I do recall that the Kop started to chant 'Burscough, Burscough' at the end, and their manager was annoyed that their team didn't come over to acknowledge it. Perhaps it was because we were pronouncing it 'Burscough' when of course its really pronounced 'Burscough'. My, how we laughed...

Was the Mansfield game featured in the 'Home and Away' Utd video? And was Deano the scorer after doing a couple of keepie ups?

I gathered it was a tradition, or running joke, but it's perhaps one that has had its day (a bit like me).

When Webster broke his leg (a bad double fracture) I gather than nobody at the club thought to phone his wife and tell her. I wasn't at that game but I was at his comeback match many months later - v Wolves in the Zenith Data Systems Cup. Neither Agana or Deane played that night and we put out a team of midgets, but still won 1 - 0 thanks to a goal from John Francis. Webster did very well on his comeback and our defence kept Steve Bull quiet.

May have been a BU thing, but I seem to remember the memries threads slowly changing to mammaries...

That game sticks in the memory only because of the way United played. As you say, we had a team of midgets and kept the ball on the deck all night. That was the only time I ever saw a Bassett team play that way.

I think Mitch Ward made his debut that night.

I went to the home game against Altrincham (2-2?) but couldn't afford the replay, (thank god) I also went to the away game at Stockport where I made the classic mistake of taking a new girlfriend along, I never saw her again, my charm clearly didn't make up for the awful game, thanks a lot Blades.

I went to the Stockport replay, another dire game which we won in extra time due to a Kenworthy header.

I have a vague memory of reading the report on the first game and reading that Derek Richardson played a blinder. Surely a unique moment in football history.

"Burscough, Burscough"

I too remember our fans shouting for Burscough at the end. It was done I suppose because they were feeling good that

we had won but wanted to show respect to them for giving us a good game. I can't recall our fans doing that for any other

visiting side. The nearest to it is when they clapped Kabba (on loan at Grimsby) after a game at the Lane a short while before we

signed him.

I think that his wife was featured talking about it on "United" wasn't she?

Didn't we sing out Peter Bonnetti's name one match (and also, "He's the second best goalie in the land"!)after he kicked the ball out of play so that our injured player could receive treatment - back in the 60s I think it must have been. Might even have been Mick Jones that went down - long time agomthough...

I remember when a clearly past-it Gazza played against us for Boro in 1998, many people stood and gave him an ovation as he walked off the field.

The best reception I can remember a visiting player getting in the last 20 years is the one given to Andy Linighan, who got a standing ovation from the kop when warming up as a substitute during our cup win against Arsenal in 1996 in recognition for the sterling work he did for us in 1993. He was good enough to acknowledge our applause!

Mitch Ward was a sub but he had played in some pre-season friendlies.

My other memory of that ZDC match was that for some reason Bassett had the bench close to the touchline rather in the present dugout. Martin Pike was a sub and Bassett suddenly decided to bring him on for the closing stages. They were in such a rush that the kit man tried to pull his tracksuit bottoms off whilst Pike was still sitting on the bench. The result was that he pulled Pike clean off the bench and he landed on his backside on the grass.

Wrexham Away.
We took loads, with the majority sat down behind the net above a terrace that was also full of Blades. I remember singing the one man went to mow song that the Wrexham fans had clearly never heard before and at 10 men the whole stand stood up to sing. Their fans had no answer!
Also, right at the front of ourstand was a blond spiky haired punk who was conducting our singing with what looked like a pair of drum sticks with pom poms tied on the top.
Fantastic day out and I was too young to even have a pint.
Hadn't we been beaten by them in the league earlier that season?

No, I'm pretty sure they were a division lower than us when that cup match was played. They got relegated the previous season. It was in that season that they beat (hammered) us 4-1. I couldn't believe that result as we'd beaten them very comfortably at Bramall Lane earlier in the season 2-0, but it could easily have been 6-0 as the match was so one sided.

Correct. The 2-0 win was on 16/10/82. Morris (pen) and Edwards scored. The 1-4 defeat was on 26/2/83. Mike Trusson put us 1-0 up before we collapsed.

Thanks. I was at the league game as well. There were A4 sheets of paper stuck over the prices at the turnstiles that had put the ticket price up from £3.50 to £4. We were all pretty unhappy at that but I would gladly pay it now!

Wrexham in 1978 (or maybe 1979), night match midweek. Police had banned Doc Martens and similar attire and were confiscating them on entering the ground. You could go in but 'bart thi booits'. Anyone remember this??
