I just bought this and would recommend it for any other saddos who like to know about the most obscure United games. As you would expect it is full of stats but also has a detailed season by season account of the cup itself.

It brings back memories fror old farts like me - I was there for United's last ever game in the competition when our reserves beat Wednesday's reserves 3-2 at the Lane in the final in May 1982.

Darren. Can you help me with a County Cup game against Barnsley at Oakwell around 1969 -71 time. We were strolling at 2-0 and their centre forward turned big Eddie in the box twice to score and if I remember rightly got an hat trick. Could you have a look in your book to see what the centre forwards name was. I seem to remember his surname started with the letter L. ?

Darren doesnt do opponents scorers. Was it Leslie Lea the signing from Cardiff? Barnsley won the County cup match by 3-2 in October or november 1970

Sorry for the off-topic-ness but does anyone know if Nick Udall's book about memorable United games in the 70s is out yet?

cant remember the county cup. Yeah I must be young

I remember United beating Barnsley 9-0 at the Lane any idea what year it was and who were the United scorers late 60s I would guess at. Also at a geame against Donny at the Lane towards the end of the competition smallest attendance Ive been in I think it was something like 832

You missed two Clarebrough and Kirkham books - the Complete Record and the players' A-Z (both of which mention me :-))

Youre right about the players record, but the other one is listed as 'Encyclopaedia without printing errors'.

For some reason Ive never understood my cousin has his name at the back of the centenary book.

Fit and Proper?

The one about the board(s) since the late 70s. Not sure who wrote it but a cracking, if scary read. The shit we've been indirectly involved with

Ed. Bell and Armstrong, of course

Sheffield Football history by Farnsworth, two volumes
Sheffield United - A History also by Farnsworth, a slim book from 1948 I picked up off eBay years ago.

Blade Runners by Gary Armstrong

I was at all those games. I always went to the Barnsley games and went with 2 Barnsley fans to the 9-0 game. I don't recollect the Pigs taking part ?

Wednesday opted out of the cup for about 10 years from the early 60's to the early 70's, but re-entered the 72-73 competition.

I get acknowledgments in both books for my Stakhonovite labours at the coalface of the Colindale Newspaper Library. Its thanks to me that we have line ups for games in New Caledonia in 75 and the South American tours in 66 and 67 as I managed to find detailed reports in local papers (in Spanish and French!)

I don't think Farnsworth did the 48 book - he isn't that old! The club brought out a booklet of the history of the club in 1975 and there are also promotion commeration booklets for 1971, 1982, 1984, 1990 and 2006. There is also a "50 years in the first division book" from 1967 and Percy Young's "Football in Sheffield". We also have the recent "Sheffield Home of Football" and the History of Bramall Lane that came out a few years back.

Youre right, its not Farnsworth its a guy who used to write for the Sheffield Telegraph and fought in the City Battallion but his name escapes me. I have the Bramall Lane book and the 50 seasons in the First Division one, its has an interview with one of the black and white minstrels in it.

Ive got Young's book but had fogotten it. Essentially Im using this thread to see if theres any books Ive missed.

Theres the Derek Dooley book too.

And a book by The Star about derby matches which has a heavy focus on our victories.

Farnsworth wrote the text for that.

You can tell it's a Star publication, because it contains 10 photographs of Wednesday players scoring in Sheffield Derbies against one United player doing the same thing.

There's also the club yearbooks that ran from 1993-94 to 2004-05 (though I think earlier versions exist which were available for members of Blades Revival only). There were also one off yearbooks in 83-84 and 85-86. Brian Marwood also did an autobiography shortly after he joined United. Vinnie Jones has done about 23 autobiographies as well - he generally deals with his spell at the Lane in 4 pages and how he saved us from relegation single handedly.

I think this thread calls for a bibliography of SUFC book sticky.

The Colossus - A book by Graham Phythian about William 'Fatty' Foulke. Good reading

I've also got the United Quiz book that Warnock supposedly did with a couple of others.

Other United books: Blades Tales volumes 1 and 2, and the Adrian Bell book, Fever Hitch.

Denis Clarebrough provided the words for a book about United in that archive photos series, which is simply entitled "Sheffield United"

Oh, and Blades Business Crew...

Also a United quiz book from 1989 and Joe Mercer's biography.

The Life and times of Mick Jones (though mainly about his Leeds days)

Trying to remember what Alan Birchenall called his autobiography. Give 'em the Birch or something like that.
