This frame shows Stevens got to the ball first. If their lad had got his right foot on the ball when Stevens takes the ball then he could not possibly have been upright at this point (note the position of his right leg). The surface conditions possibly made the tackle look worse than it was. VAR would certainly have ruled out a penalty, and no way would Stevens have got a red card.

Yes it was a foul.

That’s how I saw it , that if it carries on into the area is a pile of crap as well … that only counts for holding the shirt !

Which is completely irrelevant. You can't make reckless challenges. Answer me this - Sharp's clean through v Stoke in a couple of weeks, their keeper comes out, cleans him out Schumacher on Battiston style, but grazes the ball just before Sharp is sent into a coma. Corner kick, yes?

Bad, isn't it? That still shows Stevens got the ball and it happened outside the area. Tend to agree with what you say. Game as it happens though, split second and all
that.
Too late now. It's the Blades, and ever will it be so.

Sorry but how does that picture show Stevens got the ball.
If it was that easy, I'd have retired on my 'spot the ball' winnings years ago.
Here's a still from the video BEFORE Steven got there!

There are persuasive arguments both ways as to whether it should or should not have been a penalty . That being the case , it should have come as no surprise that in front of a home crowd , it was given as one .

What is not in doubt is that Enda Stevens ‘ decision to make a tackle like that when the player was moving diagonally away from goal and with two defenders goal side of him was utterly stupid .

I still have faith in him and don’t think he deserves a lot of the flack that he gets on here , but that tackle was both reckless and unnecessary and effectively cost us the game .

Hi Stegosaurus

Yes, like the customer, the referee is always right

Getting the ball first is irrelevant, nothing in the rule book says 'if a player get the ball first it's not a foul'.

It's a free kick and red card all day long.

On reflection, Stevens's left boot makes contact with Solanke's thigh, very high up - which is dangerous play and a red card.

But that is a foul outside the area every time, so not a penalty

pommpey

My opinion is it's certainly a foul and should've been a card for Enda. Definitely not a pen though.

I haven't seen a decent view of the offside that slav mentioned though....?

Please tell me what you think makes it a red card ?

For once Hemmingham has got something correct. Well apart from the fact the word "and" should be used instead of "but" and "must" instead of "shall" if it is to be a direct quote from Law 12.

Having read through Law 12 now there is no other reference to fouls being committed outside the penalty area that continue into it. If the ref was applying the wording of this part of Law 12 he got it wrong as did messers Murray and Neville. Pundits need to research facts before blindly making statements.

Jones may have thought Solanke was inside the area when contact was made. He was in no position to come to this view. He consulted his linesman who was also not up with play. The advice to officials is if in doubt do not make the decision but they did.

I hope the Club have scored Jones and his officials zero due to their incompetence. Hopefully he will not be officiating at one of our matches for a long time to come. I doubt Riley and the PGMOL will be interested in an issue arising in a Championship game. Having said that it is incumbent on the Club to seek answers as to why Jones came to the decision he did. If it is a misinterpretation of Law 12 re holding then advice needs to be given to all officials as a consequence. If its he thought Solanke was in the area when contact was made then his incompetence warrants being in charge of Grimsby Town in the National Conference this week end.

Fair enough, I would assume you would be a soft ref issuing many cards then,

Serious foul play how exactly? He wasn't the last man and it wasn't a dangerous or out of control tackle... soft view but fair enough.
Left foot raised at knee high with studs showing is dangerous.

He got the ball first and it's nowhere near the area, that said it's a foul because of the accidental follow through on to his thigh and let's be honest football is such a pussies game these days that it probably a red card too

Has anyone got footage of the offside on th second? Slav was adamant.

Best I can do on my phone, this is the point of the pass to the wing. Doesn't look off to me 🤷‍♂️
