Might have been his last meaningful contribution before Olsen takes over, but Foderingham's excellent double save at 1-1 was a pivotal moment in the result. I fear the heads may have gone down if they'd stolen a second having pretty much withstood the first-half barrage.

In other news, absolutely fantastic to have 6 goals from midfield - akin to rocking horse shit in Blades terms. All 5 of Fulham's goals against us at the lane when Slav was manager came from attacking mid as well, so hopefully this becomes a feature going forward!

Excellent debuts, and some class performances from the old boys - not the least Billy who gave a forward line masterclass.

Agree his positioning wasn't great for the first, but you'd still expect the striker to score 8 or 9 times out of 10 in the same scenario. Like you say, Robinson completely dropped him in it at the end of the day.

There was a moment in the first half where one of theirs had a coming together with one of our defenders (cant remember who) just over the half way line when they would have gone through on goal. I genuinely winced and thought ref might give a free kick and a red- other players around kind of hesitated a second... apart from Foderingham, who came straight out of his area and smashed the ball away. Ref didn’t flinch on the coming together, but Foddo was the quickest to react to the situation and sorted it.

He’s done alright these few games, and although I’m glad Olsen is in, I’ve now got Wes as our 2nd choice over Verrips.

Yep. Marriott should still score a large percentage of the time (if you think 8/9 out of 10 though, you clearly overestimate how often players actually score chances, and I'd take a bet with you that the next 100 penalties taken in the Championship result in less than 80 goals for any reasonable amount), it just looked at first glance that Wes was favouring the near post way too much. On another look back he adjusted maybe not quite enough, but certainly did correct the angles. As stated, I'm being hyper critical and pinning fault on him for the first is a ridiculous thing to do

Some player always has to be a scapegoat for something and I suspect that using "League 1 Wes" gives some people the feeling that they're insulting a player that they don't think is adequate and the club at the same time.

Yes, you're probably right - I tend to judge strikers according to my own deadly one-on-one strike rate in 7 aside games back at uni in 2002. I forget that I'm one of a few who truly mastered the patented Thierry Henry side foot into bottom corner every 9 chances in 10. Marriot's technique was far more agricultural

There was a moment I noticed about 30 minutes in where either Egan or Baldock had the ball at the back, under a bit of pressure. The obvious option was for the keeper to get into the right position so he could make himself available for a pass. Our Wes decided to point wildly at Robinson rather than do the aforementioned, and it was harder to make the pass to Robinson under pressure than it was to give it to Foderingham. It didn't fill me with a great deal of confidence for a player of such experience to be so shit-scared of receiving the ball in that scenario.

That said, he'll be fine as backup. We wanted an adequate Ramsdale replacement and we have one on the way. Hopefully our Wes won't have too much to do on Tuesday (assuming Olsen isn't here by then).

I'd say he's been ok for the number 2 keeper. Not done anything like Verrips did at West Brom certainly, though Verrips could argue this was extenuating circumstances i.e. late call up and facing 90 minutes vs a catapult.

He didn't really inspire at Burnley in the league cup and in the shootout he got nowhere near any of them.

Against Luton it goes down as a clean sheet but he made an absolute hash of a backpass which, but for the frame of the goal, would have cost us the game. I'm surprised you think he is better with his feet than Rammers. I thought Rammers' passing was pretty decent to be honest.

Yesterday, his positional play for the goal was poor. He was miles too far to his left and made it very simple for the striker. He could have come out and further narrowed the angle too. He also continues to have no idea on penalties. He could have kicked it out it was so bad but that's what happens when you move early. I've never got the guessing aspect. Just don't move and save the crap ones. If they are good penalties in the corners, the odds on you saving them are low anyway.

He can however be rightly praised for his double save at a crucial point in the game. This could very much have been the turning point. It went on to be a procession when it could so easily have been "oh, not again".

I have a bit more faith that he's not an absolute bombscare. He'll do ok, but I'm looking forward to seeing the imposing figure of Olsen who comes with experience and seems a real coup.

Thought same. Despite United bringing in someone who’s obviously there to replace him he didn’t let it effect his performance. Wasn’t at fault for either of the goals and I could totally understand him being a bit disillusioned and letting it affect his game.

Instead he put in a great shift and I wouldn’t be at all unhappy if he had to step up again.
