Johnsons an odd one- remember him as a player at Derby, but no recollection whatsoever of him playing for us! In fact, I always thought he went to the pigs. I’m assuming he was a Warnock “Scrapheap Challenge” who never got off the bench?

By the way, 'Scrapheap Challenge' is the best description of Warnock's transfer strategy I've ever heard.

😂😂😂

26 February 2005

Blades 1-0 Rotherham

Johnson started the match and was replaced by Andy Liddell in the 67th minute.
Was hoping his solitary appearance would be some obscure League Cup game away at Exeter that about 250 people watched. But no - I literally saw him with my own eyes and don't remember him 😆

It was either that, or him and McCabe teaming up for “Find It, Fix It, Flog It”

He definitely had a fetish for signing strikers who were either fat, crocked, too old or just generally past it.

David Kelly
Steve Lovell
Michael Boulding
Paul Furlong
Barry Hayles
Dean Windass
Iffy Onoura
Wayne Allison
Jack Lester
Tommy Johnson
David Johnson
Neil Shipperley
Geoff Horsfield
Ade Akinbiyi

Some worked but most didn't.

Chief and Shipps were absolute steals and I loved them both. Windass was worth it. Akinbiyi gets stick but did what he was bought for- helped us over the line. The fee we paid was sod all compared to the money we made by going up- and there was THAT goal at the sty. Hard to make much of a case for the rest.

There was Luke Beckett as well. When he was on our books I saw him 3 or 4 times in Meadowhall at one of those cafe’s in the middle of the walk way. Always in the same one, always talking to old biddies. It was between Argos and whats now Wilkos. Thats 3 or 4 times more than I ever saw him in a Blades shirt.

I know the name Luke Beckett but I genuinely haven't got a clue who he was or when he played for us.

Signed in 2004 from Stockport where his record was pretty good to be fair. I might be wrong, but I think the rumour at the time was we signed him because the pigs wanted him. He’s a Sheffield lad, but don't know who he supported. Came to us, was his big move, never got a look in and drifted down the divisions.

Because we all need summat to do right now:

Glenn Cockerill's dad Ron was from Chapeltown and although Glenn was born in Grimsby (where his dad is considered a legend) he had a lot of family in the Sheffield area.

I've posted before about Ron Cockerill who was indeed from Chapeltown and something of a local hero among kids of my age in the early '50's .

He was a fine all round sportsman with an outstanding physique and over 6 ft . tall . He played cricket for Mortomley CC whose ground was in High Green park and I once saw him smash a six out of the ground and onto the roof of the school on the other side of Greengate Lane , a huge hit by any standards .

It was said by many at the time that , if had not chosen football as his career , he could well have gone on to play for Yorkshire .

I believe that whe he turned professional Wolves were keen to sign him and they were one of the top clubs at the time , but he chose to go to Huddersfield as it was closer to home .

As for Glenn , I've always thought that if he had played in a Blades team with better players around him he could have gone on to be one of our all time greats .

Billy Sharp has a nicer garden than John Fleck
Both Sander Berge and Retsos are living with their brothers (I think)
Lee Sandford is an author and a stockbroker

Can't remember what I was looking for when I found this out about a week ago:
Chris Morgan holds United's record for the player to receive most red cards with 6.
Chris Morgan holds Barnsley's record for the player to receive most red cards with 6.

Rob Kozluk scored 3 goals for Sheffield United.

The length of time between his second and third goal was 7 years, 2 months and 3 days.

I think this is probably a club record in terms of length of time between goals.

6 years 11 days for Sharp! Looked it up so had to post it, of course he went away in between those goals.

Just wait til Jags gets one when the season restarts...

If the moon was made of cheese, as some out there are prone to believe (myself included), it would expand in diameter from 1079 miles to 1615 miles since the density of cheese is less than rock. The water and casein protein would begin to separate, with the casein moving closer to the core. Now it gets even more interesting 😎 As the pressure increases, the casein breaks down with nitrogen and ethane rising to the surface to create an ATMOSPHERE 😱😱😱

The atmosphere would in turn trap sunlight with the end result being that the surface would become warm enough to sustain oceans 👍👍👍

This confirms that:
Man didn't land on the moon.
The moon is made of cheese.

Aymen Tahar (one FA cup game for the Blades in 09) is the only player to play for Staveley Miners Welfare FC and Steaua Bucharest.

United once bought the most expensive player in Britain (as at 1913) when we bought George Utley from the banjo twangers for £2k. He would go on to captain the Blades in the 1915 Cup final win and play for England. He was also instrumental in establishing the current player testimonial rules which remain to this day, after Utd granted him one to appease him to stay on for a couple more seasons which created a bit of a stink with the other SUFC players including the great Billy Gillespie.

So we haven't always been shit payers in the transfer market.

Guesses here, but...

Brian Deane
James Beattie
Dean Saunders
Ian Rush
Peter Ndlovu (v Liverpool I think)
Graham Stuart?
Gary Speed?
Edited to add Danny Cademarteri?
Not sure if it was premier League era but I definitely remember going to Highfield road Coventry when ndlovu got a hat trick against us but that could have been old division 1

Michael Verrips has recently joined an exclusive club: goalkeepers who made only a single league appearance for the Blades. The people who have done this in the last 30 years are:

Mervyn Day 0-3 v Wimbledon 1991-2
Gary Kelly 0-2 v Watford 2002-3
Lee Baxter 2-3 v Burnley 2003-4 (subbed at HT)
Phil Barnes 1-0 v Rotherham 2004-5
Jake Eastwood 0-3 v Wolves 2017-18 (on as a sub at 0-2)
Michael Verrips 0-4 v WBA 2021-22

Verrips and Eastwood may yet play another league game, of course.

Another fun fact: if Olsen plays on Saturday, we will have used 4 different goalkeepers in the last 5 league games. This must be a club record, and I wonder whether it's a league record.

Not a Blades fact, but he did play for us.

Andy Gray made his debut for Leeds in January 1996.

He scored his first goal for Leeds in September 2012.

Pretty sure that Andy Gray still holds a record as the only player to score on both the opening day of the PL and the Championship.

In 2005 we played Leicester at home and won 4-1. We then sold him to Sunderland who played their opening PL game (Charlton?!) the following weekend and scored in that game also.

He did indeed.

And that was the only Premier League goal he ever scored in his career across 51 appearances for Leeds, Forest and Sunderland.

I've often wondered what Lee Baxter actually did at HT in that Burnley match. Did he have the chutzpah to remain with the group or did he just jump in a taxi and fuck the fuck off?
