Brewster; I don't want to be unkind but...

I think who ever decided to pay that kind of money for this guy ought to be made to pay it back.
He's got to be playing for a transfer out, and with the money he's made out of this deal at his age he can afford to drop out of football for a couple of seasons and go back to Liverpool on a free never mind £40,000,000.....

You can't ignore the form from Swansea and England youth, nor can you ignore his miserable time at us so far.

One of either 2 options has to be true.

A) Prior form was a flash in the pan and the kid has no future in the Premier League or maybe Championship football, with him having limited footballing ability and we've bought a very expensive lemon.

B) He's actually a decent player, with huge potential. With limited first team exposure is, so on a steep learning curve, woefully low in confidence and playing in a team who've scored about 5 in 15 matches.

Previously i was certain option B was correct, but as each game goes by my confidence wanes.

The next 10 months probably dictates how his career will go, it feels like sink or swim already.

Diego was a world beater at youth level. Sadly it does not always translate to grown up football.

We can debate this forever. Yes, we're a crap side with a crap midfield, and very low on confidence. However, Brewster in his time with us appears to have contributed zero. I don't notice when he's on the pitch, his contribution is so minimal. He's not a "young lad learning his craft", he's actually a grown man who looks like he's ok with a footballer's lifestyle and money, but much less ok with the effort and skill required to do the job well. There are players in the PL the same age as him, with similar experience, who are fully fledged footballers.
I think the club should try to sell him, even at a big loss, because there's no evidence he wants to do anything for Sheffield United.

Whenever Brewster gets the ball he looks decent unfortunately he just never gets on the ball , that cross People are ignoring the fact he skinned his man probably the first player in 18 months to do that

Yes he has been poor but so have the rest of the squad it Would be nice if some blades backed him there’s clearly however there’s far more writing him off , blokes started about 10 games playing in the worst team possible for a striker and needs a break

I think once the transfer window is done and dusted, and we have signed some midfielders + winger with a quick thinking football brain, then Brewster might get fed some ammo that he can convert into goals.

Strikers tend to be confidence players. You can't expect them generally to play a few minutes here and there in various positions and expect them to get out of the bad form. They need consistent game time with consistent chances. I saw a post above saying he has had chances in the 30 odd games. Probably has but a player not in form is unlikely to take that one chance that comes up every 3 games when on the pitch 20 mins here and 40 mins there. When they get a few goals them one off chances always seem to go in.

IMO the major thing to fix is midfield. Not only creating chances but increasing the quality of the chances. Play mcburnie and brewster, hammer them with game time and chances and I think they will come good.

Slav needs to make a decision and live or die by it

Problem with Brewster is we don’t play to his strengths, look at the goals he scored at Swansea and we just don’t tee him up that way

Either rip up the midfield and buy/loan players that can create for him or fuck him off

Either way it will cost, but the alternative is to continue with a £23m dud

CW drove us to spend the bulk of our budget to take a knife to a gun fight, best window ever remember lads
What are his strengths?….he doesn’t hold it up, run the channels, head it, cross it or even score?….he needs offloading, unfortunately at a massive loss

Know what you mean, we definitely haven’t seen them!

But you don’t represent England at u16,17,18&21 - score 20 in 23 games at u17 & 10 in 20 at Swansea if you are gash…

We don’t play through balls, how many 1-1 with the keeper has he had?

Is that because he doesn’t make the runs? Possibly, is that because he knows he won’t get played through? Probably.

Our build up is so ponderous and predictable. Most of Billy’s goals are finished in the box because if a ball is bobbling in the area Sharp is a ‘fox in the box’ get the ball in the area and let him do what he does best

If and it’s a big if, we are to persevere with Brewster, Slav should get a video of his goals and set the team up to provide him with those chances - if not bomb him out

This falls at CWs feet, we had a great system of OLCBs to create overloads out wide and get the ball into the box, then he goes and spunks our budget on a speed merchant that needs through balls??!!

My fear for us is that he is almost unsalable now, we won’t recoup more than 20-30% of our outlay, and who is going to commit £40k pw to pay him anyway?

May as well try to get him scoring, or he will be the best paid reserve in our history

Unfortunately I fear the lads “football brain” has been lobotomised.

If it was just Brewster, fair enough, but it's all of them.
I think we have to give the strikers a chance with a new midfield that creates chances for them.
They've all scored goals at previous clubs and funnily enough they've all started shooting blanks at exactly the same time.

If they missed 10 clear cut chances every game then fair enough, but it works both ways, if a striker is expecting the ball he'll move for it, when he knows it ain't coming he'll be caught on his heels the one time in a thousand that it does.

There's no expectation, no rhythm, no habit forming, just constant depression as our midfield ignore your run for 12 solid months and play the ball back to the goalkeeper
Couldn’t agree more. Last time I saw Brewster play was Huddersfield I think and they literally didn’t pass the ball to him.

It's still to early to give up on him for me, sort the other issues out in the team first and see what happens, the creativity is clearly the main issue and needs addressing. I hope this is Slav's plan anyway, you just know he'd go somewhere else and blitz the league.

The goals he scored for Swansea were largely down to bad goalkeeping and piss poor defending,... Watch them through again and imagine the shit our keepers would get if they'd have conceded such soft goals
You dont score 20+ goals by luck and bad keeping/defending. There will be elements of it in certain goals just like Salah or Aguero will capitalise on in the prem but the rest is down to him and the team around it creating easy, quality chances for him

11 goals

Yep Brewster is wank, let’s blame him.

Not the more experienced strikers around him also not scoring and doing fuck all.

Not the non-existent midfield that consistently go backwards instead of creating chances.

Not the ex-Manager who made a song and dance of the signing and then barely played him.

Not the dogs abuse he gets on social media and here for being poor when his confidence is already rock bottom.

Not the fact that his first real first team run outs were for a side pretty much relegated all season, against some of the world best defenders.

But no, he’s wank. Sell him and play McBurnie instead, at least he wins us a couple of free kicks per game and falls over a lot.

Support the lad, he’s not missing easy chances and open goals. He never gets the chances and he’s not a drop deep and create your own striker.

I think the lad is mentally weak, fair enough to say he isn't getting a lot of chances to convert but what does he do about it but stand around sulking. Compare his demeanour to that of Billy Sharp who shows for the ball, runs the channels, is always looking for a yard of space, giving the defender a slight nudge just before a cross comes in to make him off balance, anything to make something happen. Even the young Jebbison lets the CB know he is around and up for a battle. Brewster needs to work his bollocks off and then things might start to fall for him. He has a decent shot on him why is he not demanding to be taking free kicks 25yards out when the best Norwood can do is float it into the keepers gloves? When things are not going well you need a bit of mental toughness sadly with this team and Brewster in particular this attribute seems to be severely lacking just now. Not sure this lad has it in him to become a top pro maybe he is one of those who either only shines at a lower level or in a good team when everything is going well

We have slipped up badly here, it's obvious that along with Brewster we should have gone to Swansea and bought the guy who was feeding him........ :tumbleweed:

Not that I'm blaming our midfield of course.........
