The pitch maintenance on the hallowed Bramall Lane turf is progressing well and the first cut is scheduled to take place at the end of this week.

At the beginning of June, the top 15mm which included all the grass was removed from the playing surface in order to re-level and re-seed ahead of the new campaign, in addition to applying 30 tonnes of sand to act as a dressing for the pitch.

Now grass is starting to become prominent across the surface and Assistant Groundsman John Gleed gives us the latest update: "Once the pitch has been seeded it germinates for around two weeks and then we will do the first cut on Friday which will be 14 days since the seeding.

"From there the grass starts to thicken and we fertilise it so it should be ready six weeks after seeding, by the middle of July it will be ready to be played on so everything is calculated depending on pre-season matches.

"All our plans are weather permitting and too much rain could knock us back, but if we keep getting some sun then I am sure it will be fine."

Beside myself with excitement

What are Danny Wilson's thoughts on the pitch? Does he still think it will improve the quality of football?

Breaking news:

Sheffield United are delighted to announce the pitch is coping well, and has grown 0.129841 inches this afternoon alone.

The state of the pitch has been dreadful over recent seasons.
You see other grounds with decent grass but not BDTDBL - not for years.
Was it the dark clouds hanging over the stadium last year or a less then competent grounds staff?

Some will say that we let it go that bad to stop the opposition playing since our lot didn't need a playing surface.
Didn't stop us getting beaten 11 times at the Lane though.

I'm amazed that they can plant new seed and then cut the grass barely three weeks later.
It's never happened for me when I've tried to re-seed a lawn. I usually end up with more weeds than grass.

The groundsman being a pro might have something to do with it. ;)

They go to all this trouble and then let egg-chasing be played on the pitch.

Where are the eagles playing their home games whilst this is being done anyway?

Update :

The sun is out today, expecting similar growth the that reported by Zlatan. I wonder if we used the Blec SandMaster this year?

"I have worked with Danvic Turf Care LTD for 5 years for end of season renovation work. The work includes koroing and sand banding with the Blec SandMaster. I have found them to be professional and reliable and would not hesitate to recommend them to anyone."

Head Groundsman at Sheffield United FC - Glen Northcliffe.

You see Jimmy this is where your limited understanding of turf maintenance lets you down. The Blec SandMaster is an in season maintenance tool. We have gone for a full re-lay.
Removal of the original turf, Sand and then seed.

Hope this helps.;)

Cant we leave it as sand and have international women's beach volleyball there for a season?
Would be much better than the shit that played on it last year.

But would you buy a season ticket for that?

But knowing our luck we'd get the Belarus ex shot putting team masquarading as a beach volley ball team! (They'd be able to thow it higher and further so must be better!)

Where are the eagles playing their home games whilst this is being done anyway?

They are playing once at Don Valley and the rest are away.

They have 3 games scheduled for BDTBL on Aug 21 & 28 and Sept 4. Hardly going to wreck the pitch for the season, besides which football does far more damage to the playin surface than rugby.

Agreed, but then again multi-function use doesn't really give the pitch time to repair itself. Look at the state of Headders since they started letting the goons wrestle each other and roll around on it in winter to it's former billiard table aspect.

what a load of bo11ox.....................

Get Sir Neil in wi the tractor, plough it up throw sum seed down ....job done.

I hope this exciting first episode will be followed up by "Live and direct from the changing rooms - fresh paint for a fresh season".

I have it on good authority that there is a problem with the paint.

An unscrupulous agent has cornered all the red on the market and we just can not afford it whilst the white has been sold in S6 where they are anticipating crowds of 12,000 plus on a regular basis to watch it dry.

It's obvious to anyone that we left it far too late to organise the paint.
