Quote that sums up our biggest problem

Surely the constant aversion to passing forwards and taking 3 passes when 1 will do is what he is on about? I saw plenty of that.

So many times we needed to get it across the pitch to start a move and it went from Egan to Norwood to Berge and then to Brewster, or an attacking one two is on around a defender and the two ends up being pass back to the centre circle.
numerous examples in the first half, especially on the right, easy five ten yard passes forward, ignored in favour of back or sideways, not singling one player out, 3/4 were guilty

There are so many problems with this squad that it will likely take Slav one season to undo the damage, get rid of the deadwood and sign his own players, and next season to take us up.

I get that he's waited to sign players until he's tried his system with the existing squad, and seen if anyone can shake off last season, but the early signs are the same problems from the some players are still there. Not having a full pre-season didn't exactly help him.

For me the following all need to go. The problem is, who the hell would want to sign them?

Norwood - can hit a 10p from 50 yards with a diagonal ball but can't beat the first defender or near post at corners, positionally poor off the ball and only passes sideways when he isn't pinging it. Consistently inconsistent and has been for the last two seasons. With Vieria coming in we don't need him anymore.

Baldock - defensively good, but passes backwards as a first option everytime he bombs forward instead of putting in an early cross, giving opponents time to get more men back to defend the cross. Keep as a squad player but we need better in the long term.

Fleck - Utter wank. Washed up, God knows who is going to buy him as he's been beyond poor for 18 months. One of the players I used to admire. Now I just get angry when I watch him play.

Stevens - Hasn't kicked a ball yet through injury, but see Fleck.

Lowe - Hasn't impressed three managers. Get rid.

Burke - Part of a deal that saw Robinson move to West Brom. Can't argue with Robinson going as he was a winger in a team that doesn't play wingers. Wilder tried to convert him into a striker to utilise his pace but it didn't work out. Signing Burke on the other hand. What the hell was he thinking? I'm assuming Wilder thought he could bring out the best in him just like he did with Rodwell and Morrison!

Verrips/Foderingham - we don't need both as three keepers will suffice and we've still got Eastwood. One needs to go.

Completely agree, forget 3 or 4 at the back, the system isn't important, they still look, act and play like last season, short on passion, confidence and a will to fight/win

With respect , I disagree .

The very reason most of our players have lost both confidence and passion is because of the system rigidly enforced upon them over the last 18 months or so which was both mind numbingly boring and totally ineffective.

Within that system , passing the ball sideways and backwards was not only deemed to be acceptable but almost actively encouraged , hence the almost automatic selection of Lundstram who was particularly adept in this aspect of the game .

It will take time for the new manager to change the mindset of the players who have been subjected to this utterly negative way of playing the game , but I am quietly confident that given time and a few new faces who can help bring a different approach , he is the man to put the smile back on our faces and produce the kind of exciting attacking style we all crave .

I can see a lot being gone next year.
Stevens
Lowe
Fleck
Norwood
Mousset
Burke
Freeman
Foderingham
Robinson

Maybe, due to age.
Sharp
McGoldrick
Basham
My opinion of the list you’ve compiled is they should have gone after the first season in the Prem , not next year. That first season they all rode that great wave of “confidence” , Wilder should have made the transisition after that season, instead he stuck with the same tried ; trusted ageing squad and same tactics, he then blew his budget on one unproven striker . In the Premier League you have to keep evolving or else , well we all know what happens.

My style is taking risk and looking to score goals," he added.

I'm glad someone knows what Slav is saying, because I can't tell a fkin word when he's being interviewed

I've never for one second thought that the team look like they are happy to settle for a point (going on the last 18 months, not just Slav's time), so I don't agree with the first part of that statement. They just look incapable of scoring, which the majority of the time means you don't even get a point!

Wilder was never the type of manager to do that either, so I don't believe that's the issue. I believe the team want to win, but are incapable of creating enough chances/scoring enough goals to do so.
I agree 100%

totally agree with you joe excellent and spot on points i think its going to take 18 months for slav to create his own side think we can forget going straight back up this season

Maybe just stick to the written interviews then if it's too difficult to understand his slightly broken english

Slav knows how he wants the players to play but coming in later than usual means it will take a bit longer to put into practice.

Basham seemed confident that the players would get to grips with the new way of doing things.

Good point, but it isn't written immediately after the game when they interview him on TV

It ain't Slavs fault. I can't speak Serb, so why should I expect him to speak the Queens English?

Slav always looks like he might kill someone. Maybe one day Andy Giddings will go missing?

I know what you mean, his interviews are hard work but if you read his written press stuff it's bang on the money
Everything he says is how i feel watching

We still have the issue of over playing out wide and not getting an early cross in with Baldock being the main culprit. Happened a few times on Saturday and a massive factor why we struggle to create. Give it 10 games or so and 2/3 new players and hopefully it ll change.

I think confidence or the lack of it is the bigger issue, the look shell shocked and short of belief. Many have looked at the contrast between the remarks from Bash re a point gained, clean sheet something to build on, and Slavs, 2 points lost.
The system was changed adapted mid game for the last few years, with either Duffy coming on as sub, or Bash removed for another striker, yes they have been rigidly schooled re the back 3, but think back to its inception, it didn't take 6 months for them to get used to it.
It was essential that the board hired a strong character as manager, they have, Slav now wants some new faces, not because they are world class players, but new faces, the squad desperately needs a spark, a change, they are in a rut, that on their own can't get out of.

I don’t know if we are thinking the same thing here and I’m conscious about falling into the trap of taking sides with regards Wilder

But one thing he used to do that would to drive me nuts was when he wanted fresh faces he would publicly say in interviews that the current group were punching above their weight and weren’t good enough and that they were League One/Championship players playing in the championship/premier league (delete as appropriate)

And whilst it was true I could never understand why this was seen as a beneficial things to say
I can only really think of 2 times he really called them out.

Away at Hull in Season 1 in the championship
After Leicester tonked us during lockdown - that was a strange one and as we then never recovered has been seen as ruining confidenc etc

Wilder generally was pretty straight in interviews until last season when defeat after defeat leaves a manager nowhere to go.

You are right though that it makes no sense to say publicly that the players aren't good enough unless you then make 4 or 5 changes soon after.

I still think this year is a possibility but next season is probably more realistic .

It often worked though, which is what people love to forget now.

Maybe I’ve over amplified it in my mind but it’s felt like a very regular thing

I’m not adverse to it because some of them are coasting and others need a rocket, but:

1. Throwing the players under the bus after 2 games may not be the best strategy.

2. It’s your team. If they don’t obey your instructions that’s on you.

I bet he can’t believe how poor this squad is.

oh yeah not totally writing this season off but still think to get the players in slav wants ramsdale and berge will have to be sold if he then gets the players in he wants who know we might just take off

Judging by your posts you must be the most successful human being to ever walk planet earth
