Often went to the horror all nighters, it was easier to get there for a kip than getting a taxi home at midnight on a Friday.Saw the exorcist there when it came out
Crapped misen
Also had all nighters on Fridays
Great photo this. Park Square roundabout in all its glory pre supertram flyover. I was in town as a 16 year old when it burned down. 1984 i think.Bit surreal. I'll post one that's probably a bit later than yours. Remember these litter bins?View attachment 118037
Had been the Queens Restaurant previously, certainly from mid1950's.The Indus underneath.
Many a dunken meal in there.
What's the white, presumably timber, booth top right on pavilion balcony in photo1?
I love Bramall Lane, but if there's one structure I wish could have been saved, it's the old cricket Pavilion.
I always love going to't pictures but could never get mi head around 'all nighters', unless it was for what Blade.com described as "a lot of shuffling about", your interpretation, on the other hand, gives it a whole new dimension.Often went to the horror all nighters, it was easier to get there for a kip than getting a taxi home at midnight on a Friday.
Walt Disney's Beaver Valley ? give over XM, probably a front for them mucky films of the era. Looks to me like it's being raided by Plod, plenty of guys in rain mac's stood about, and they've even brought the Bobby off directing the traffic from outside C&A to help out.Had been the Queens Restaurant previously, certainly from mid1950's.

Mind boggles at the Disney film, someone exiting The Bell, must have been early afternoon.
Is this another building facade that should have been saved. I think so.

Fertile imagination, like it, but Wicker Cinema(Studio5 6 &7), as it was then, pre1958, were showing standard circuit films then. There was a newsagents between the cinema and the Arches that sold 'top shelve' magazines, even displaying them in the window.Walt Disney's Beaver Valley ? give over XM, probably a front for them mucky films of the era. Thanks XM, regards Plods white coat looks like one size fits all, bit like the Umpires coats down at the Lane about the same era.Fertile imagination, like it, but Wicker Cinema(Studio5 6 &7), as it was then, pre1958, were showing standard circuit films then. 'Point Duty' was what you were looking for, ref the copper in the white coat. I recon he was either going on or coming off from top of Commercial St X roads. Remember the 'Tardis' that stood at the GPO end of the long tram shelter? Opposite the News Theatre, bet that's where they kept their coats.

'Tardis' not on this photo, but stood in the corner behind the pipe smoking man in the Homberg, Certainly was there early 50's when we caught tram from there to Owlerton speedway. This photo probably late 40'sView attachment 118157
You don't say which restaurant, could it have been the Queens, I understood it had a high recommendation and the son of the owner was always immaculately dressed so kind of follows the recommendations would be right. The first place I ever took a girl for a meal and I was mightily impressed and looking back , I still am .
It was very plush , all thick carpets and red velvet curtains and the steaks we ordered from an immaculately dressed waitress were cooked at the table in brandy and cream with a theatrical flourish .
A far cry from a number of places I can think of where you are required to order at the bar for food which comes plated up and obviously been left standing , but still at a price higher than the equivalent it would have been back then and of nowhere near the same quality .
Yes , the Queens - my post referenced yours which was about it .You don't say which restaurant, could it have been the Queens, I understood it had a high recommendation and the son of the owner was always immaculately dressed so kind of follows the recommendations would be right.
60 or so years ago precooked, re-heat meals started to be available to pubs and restaurants. Like boil in a bag V your own home prepared meal no comparison
First time I took a girl for a meal was Hop Sing's on Guildhall St and now that girls mi wife. Just looked on Google Maps and its still going, though moved a couple of hundred yards into Westgate. 58 years some going for a Chinese.
Chip shop or coffee bar before that, al'us found a meal wasn't conducive before 'a lot of shuffling about', like eating before playing a match, a fart in the wrong place could completely spoil the moment as the earth is about to shake.![]()

Anybody ID the bike, probably a 2 stroke, the guy has either run out of fuel or is about to thieve itFitzalan Square. Park Square roundabout is at the bottom of Commercial Street ( to the left of the cinema.
It's not clear but my comment was regarding the previous photo #22,072 posted by SB where Park Square is clearly visible.Fitzalan Square. Park Square roundabout is at the bottom of Commercial Street ( to the left of the cinema.
Yes, no and yes if I've been drinking.....
That top photo was just about taken from my usual spot on the kop
The feller in white coat, bottom left, could be Graham Shaw.
I couldn’t get the angle quite right but you’re saying it’s this? My first thought was east end somewhere but you could be right.GPO on the left, Elephant on the right and the yet to be built Odeon straight in front. The car will be on Norfolk Street with Flat Street to the left. Picture taken in Fitzalan Square..............................................................is my guess.
Yes. Exactly that position.I couldn’t get the angle quite right but you’re saying it’s this? My first thought was east end somewhere but you could be right.
