March 16th 1963 we played Southampton away in the FA Cup. I believe we lost 1-0 ! I have the program and a shirt related to that game, must get round to having them framed.
UTB!

We eventually played our 3rd round match in early March (v Bolton) after the big freeze and after that we had to play a lot of games in march and April

We beat Leeds in the League Cup at Bramall lane on the day I was born (8.9.70). I have the programme. We lost in the next round to Spurs.
We were in the old second division back then and finished the season 2nd behind Leicester to gain promotion to the old first division.

what a night that one. We hammered the mighty L**ds and Tudor had a chance that hit the bar in the 1st minute and we kept on attacking. at that time L**ds left back, Terry Cooper was rated one of the left backs in the world and one of his greatest assets was his overlapping attacks but that night, Don Revie was really worried about our Woody so he instructed Cooper to forget his overlapping style and mark Woody tightly throughout the match. At a crucial moment in the 2nd half, TC had the ball in the centre circle noticing some space caused by Woody dragging his markers far right. TC carried the ball and ended his superb solo run with a strong finish that went under Sprake's despairing hands. Don Revie admitted we were worthy winners

Didn't play on the day I was born.

We beat Bristol Rovers 4-0 at home 3 days before and Rotherham 1-0 away 4 days after though.

Silent, i watched the Damned United on the telly last night. Then went on to youtube to watch the Revie/Clough argument on television. It was really good, and i really enjoyed it, and Revie and Clough hated each other, it made for really good viewing and it was obvious Revie was still controlling the Leeds players and that is why i think Clough didn't do well at Leeds. I dunno how easy it will be for you to lipread it, but here it is anyway.

Didn't play on the day I was born.

We beat Bristol Rovers 4-0 at home 3 days before and Rotherham 1-0 away 4 days after though.

I went to both games, the Rotherham one was a late winner by Bob Atkins and it was one of the first away games i went to.

(I feel bloody old now)

No match on a Monday, but two days previous (02-10-1954) lost 1 - 2 away at Burnley in the old Div 1

I was at boarding school near Newbury on the day Clough was sacked and had no idea about the Calendar special until some years later. There is a book out recently (I was browsing it at Waterstone's I think) that reveals the full script of the YTV interview with Clough and Revie. Cloughie wasnt really well loved by the public in the early 1970s as much as he was from 1976. Nine days after clough's sacking, the Blades were playing at L**ds and I went to that match (i was home for that weekend) and despite playing well in the first half we conceded two goals against the run of the play and Keith Eddy had a chance to pull a goal back before half time with a penalty but his effort hit the post. We went on to lose 5-1!

While we are on a trip down Memory Lane......

The Season I was Born - 1951/52
United finish 11th in the Second Division, but the season will be remembered for the record 7-3 over Wednesday and the emergence as full-back partners of Graham Shaw and Cec Coldwell.

The first season my Dad took me to a few games at The Lane - 1958/59
Joe Mercer resigned as manager in December, Archie Clark, the chief scout, acted as caretaker manager until John Harris took over the reins in April.
On the field, United just miss out on promotion, finishing third in Division Two, as well as reaching the sixth round of the FA Cup.
First couple of seasons I can remember –
1960/61

An excellent season for United, securing promotion to the First Division after finishing second behind Ipswich in the Second Division. United beat Everton and Newcastle in the cup run before losing to Leicester City after three encounters.
1961/62
United complete the league double over Wednesday, with Derek 'Doc' Pace taking the headlines, on their way to fifth in the First Division and the quarter-final stages in both the FA and League Cups.
The begining of a legend !
1967/68

United make their first significant change in kit since 1890 as they introduce white shorts. They also sign a young inside forward named Tony Currie, but are relegated, finishing 21st in Division One after a disappointing start and finish to the season.
Memories !! 1971/72
United make an extraordinary start to the campaign with a 10-match unbeaten run which sees them top the table until a George Best goal helps Manchester United to victory at Old Trafford. Results become erratic and the Blades finish 10th in Division One.
1972/73
The season begins with a Watney Cup Final appearance against Bristol Rovers, but in a largely unspectacular campaign, United finish 14th in Division One.
It’s been a bit of a roller coaster ride all the way ! All part and parcel of being a Blade from crooked Chairman to the lovely Samantha / Charles Kane ( still don't know if he's Arthur or Martha). From Harris to Bassett. From a lop sided cricket ground to one of the best stadiums in the country. It's never boring and we wouldn't want it any other way.........................................would we ? Of course not.

We drew 0-0 with 7th feb 1987 Leeds. My ex's aunt bought me the program for my 18th, most thoughtful present I own to this day.

Beat swansea day before 2-0, been down hill since then, I wonder if I am the jinx after all?

Nothing on my actual birth day but by some quirk of fate, we were away at Blackpool the day after and drew 2-2.

Go on Dazzler, work backwards and tell me my birthday ;)

and no, I'm not 4 years old this year ;)

That would have to be 20th February 1965. Mick Jones got both goals. So your birthday must be 19th Feb.

:-)

2 days after I was born we played QPR at home in the first game of the 1974-75 season. Before I'd said my first words United completed their best season in my lifetime!

Interesting to look at the results from that season - the difference between 2 and 3 points for a win provides a completely different outlook. 2 draws and a defeat in the first 3 games nowadays would have everyone wondering if that Furphy bloke could hack it and prospects of a relegation battle. In '74 that saw us comfortably mid table. A month later after 4 consecutive wins and we're up to fifth!

I think I definitely peaked too early - probably with the exception of the first day win over Man Utd when Deano scored the highest position we've had in my lifetime is fifth - and we haven't been back since November 1974. Just as well I can't remember anything until my first game (Terry Curran's debut) - maybe that's why I'm more 'half-full' than 'half-empty'.

That first game was 17/8/74. We drew 1-1 and Cammack scored. Curran's league debut was 28/8/82 at Portsmouth (L1-4, Edwards). The game you are thinking of may be his competitive debut which was a 1-3 defeat (Kenworthy pen) at Home to Grimsby in the Football League Trophy on 14/8/82.

The game I was thinking of was definitely the Grimsby game - the day before my 8th birthday. We were awful, Grimsby wore a purple kit and I fell in love with the Lane atmosphere at first sight. My Dad took us in the South Stand, ostensibly to shield me from the worst excesses of language. The first time Curran touched the ball a bloke in the row in front stood up and shouted "F-off Curran you piggy C***!" and then proceeded to abuse him at every opportunity. Having never seen anything like it in my life I thought it was hilarious and adopted this approach with my Wednesday supporting mates - it worked a treat, getting me through the worst of the following 8-10 years, right up to doing the double over them!

Not much has changed since - I fully expect some kid to experience similar when Wilson takes his first game in August. I just hope they don't have to wait as long to get the upper hand over their mates at school in anything other than creative use of colourful language

Here's a cryptic challenge for you Darren (or anyone else really).
I was born on a Saturday during the season but there wasn't a United match on my birthday, or for 2 weeks before or 2 weeks after.
What date was I born on?

I would say you were born in Feb 86 (no game between 1 Feb and 8 March) or, if you are older Jan/Feb 63 (no game between Jan 19 and Feb 16).

As the latter period was exactly 28 days, I think that is more likely and that you were born on 2nd Feb 1963.

Do I get a prize?

Sorry but that's wrong. I wish I was 25 and thankfully I've not reached 48 yet.
