Squad numbers 21-22

Took me ages to cotton on to Root 66 to be honest!

I'm a bit of a stickler for squad numbers, seeing some young kid come on in number 63 or whatever makes me wince. Our next one on the list will just get 34 and keep going from there as and when they're included, not dishing numbers out to every bloke but the kitman like Liverpool/Man City etc when most of them will never kick a ball in anger in professional football.

Has that changed from last season when I thought Championship teams did have to register a squad of no more than 23 ?

If Brewster didn't take a 1-11 number he should have stuck with 24. 15 for a centre forward makes no sense (I don't care that Drogba started out at 15 for Chelsea). Foderingham shouldn't be 13 as he's not good enough to be second choice and, anyway, sub keeper should be 12.

5, 16 Centre half
6, 17 Deep lying midfielder
7, 18 Right sided midfielder
8, 19 Central midfielder
9, 20 Attacking Centre forward

I think it's a bit old fashioned to have rules about what numbers players wear based on their position.

If we’re doing it the old fashioned way, when I started watching the convention for 442 was 4 was the DM, 5&6 were the centre halves.

I know what you mean. Growing up GKs were always 1, 13 & 22

However...

I've become quite accustomed to "2s" for right backs and "3s" for left backs, with the second digit in a 2 digit number reflecting their position... Like this:

RB = 2 (12, 22, 32)
LB = 3 (13, 23, 33)
CB1 = 5 (15, 25, 35)
CB2 = 6 (16, 26, 36)

CM1 = 4 (14, 24, 34)
CM2 = 8 (18, 28, 38)

RM = 7 (17, 27, 37)
LM = 11 (21, 31, 41)

CF1 = 9 (19, 29, 39)
CF2 = 10 (20, 30, 40)

Reserve GK get what's left 😂

I know. All stems from the old 2-3-5 formation where the 3 half backs were 4, 5 & 6. Some countries pushed 4 into midfield, some 5 and some 6. Brazil, for example, 6 is viewed as a left back in a four with the defence being 2-3-5-6.

I like 4 as a centre half as that's what I wore when I played there 😃

Each Preseason, I'm previous about two things:

1. The kit has to look sufficiently like and SUFC kit.

2. The kit numbers have to look right.

South American numbering systems were different to British.

Brazil and Argentina generally have numbers 2, 3, 4 & 6 as defenders in a 4. But in Brazil #6 would be LB and #4 would be RB in Argentina. This explains why Javier Zanetti wore #4 at Inter Milan despite being a Right Back. Also explains why R.Carlos wore #6

Inverting the Pyramid (Jonathan Wilson) is a good read - technical, heavy going but interesting nonetheless.
