The final day of the 1988/1989 season i.e., the last time we played a third tier football match.

Hopefully this time will be a springboard again of plenty of goals scored at home! Those matches against Bristol Rovers and Chester were great and the momentum of teams coming off a promotion can be amazing!

I hadn't remembered the appalling results against the both four teams, two of which did the double against us.

Doesn't bode well.

Plus, notice that FIVE teams from that League are currently in the Premiership.

Fantastic season I remember it well, both Deane and Agana scored hatricks against Chester in the 6-1 win. Other 'highlights' include having to go in the home end at both Wolves, where I nearly got a slap and Northampton.

I remember the 3-3 draw at Port Vale, packed into the away end and a last minute equaliser. One of the papers said that united's forward line resembled the USA sprint relay squad, Deane, Agana, John Francis and I think Francis Joseph, maybe this was our fastest ever front 4.

I think at Northampton we were given the home end (the day of the Hillsborough disaster). This was also the year of the inflatables and all those inflatable blades.

And also notice that two of them aren't even in the football league now, (at least) one has gone and come back and one survived purely on the basis of the team coming up from the conference having a dodgy ground.

Blades had the away end at Northampton – I say end, it was more of an odd shaped terrace behind the goal that didn’t stretch the width of the pitch. I was on the home terrace, known as the Hotel End behind the other goal.

4 Tops songs being sung or is that an urban myth?

but we did the double over two of those current prem clubs and only dropped 7 from other 3 :)
ill take that kinda form next season.
on a side note i hope we dont lose the double against chesterfield and wendy, tho i'd even take thatif it meant we finished with similar points total.

Remember that game very well.

Nice sunny day. A healthy contingent in the away end in understandably high spirits. The only anti-climax was the actual football match! We were terrible. Port Vale needed us to lose and to get a 13 goal turn around to overtake us on goal difference. And we looked as if our sole intention was to avoid a heavy defeat.

Certainly one of our poorer performances of the season. But, I suppose it didn't really matter and we still had a 'P' next to our name, which feels a lot better than a 'R'!

Remember having to sit on the steps instead of in the seats that we'd payed for as Bristol City had sold too many tickets for the stand! Also remember it being a bit tasty towards the end and also after the match.

Didn't we also have a sub keeper (Benstead) which was unheard of back then? And it may be old age but I seem to remember he came on outfield.

Got very tasty in the park after with Blades in fancy dress battling with Bristol City fans it was a bizarre sight. Remember a Blade 'attacking' a police dog on the pitch as well.

Also went to the Port Vale and Reading game that season - possibly the year Reading were featured as the home side in the Manageress series? meaning me and my mates made several TV appearances on the back of it.

The 5-1 mauling of Swansea at home sticks in my mind and the pitch invasion that followed, remember Blades fans clapping the swansea fans for coming and swapping scarves over the fences. How times change!

Think that was the first game of the season, my brother and his mates didn't fancy standing so went in the home seats and when we went 3-0 up decided to start 'Branfoot out' chants. The following day several papers reported along the lines of 'disgruntled home fans have already lost patience'

My first season watching United. Before the game I used to play a form of keepy-up at home which would determine the scoreline. That was a lot of pressure on young shoulders. :)
