For me that Johnstone save against Romania alone propels him to clear number 2 for England. I wouldn’t swap Rambo for him personally, but that type of moment sticks in the memory and will have a big impact on managers like Southgate who are quite easily swayed.

It’s no better a save than some Ramsdale has managed this season by the way, the Newcastle one in particular for me.
I agree with you there! It was some save from Johnstone, and although you're right that Rammers has made similarly eye-catching saves this season, Johnstone has done it in an England shirt and I reckon that Safe Bet Southgate will most likely choose him based on that

Shame really for Henderson, for me he should clearly be our number one. That said Pickford has never left England down.

Its true, Pickford hasn't let England down but I still don't have much faith in him and his tiny arms! 😅

Definitely think Henderson should be given the chance, allowed to learn as he plays like Joe Hart did (to some extent)

And Brewster was obviously worth £23m.
Prices of unique items are determined by the particular seller + the particular buyer , at a particular time.
The thing is, based on what we'd paid for McBurnie...Brighton paid for Maupay...Villa paid for Watkins...he probably was worth about £23m when we signed him 🤷‍♂️

His performances haven't been worth £23m, no one can dispute that, but hindsight is a wonderful thing!

I agree that all those points are involved in determining transfer fees and it’s ridiculous to try to draw direct comparisons but ability does come into it. That’s the start; if a PL club makes a bid, they are effectively saying they believe that player is either good enough for the PL, or has the potential to be. Then, all the other factors come into play. The alternatives can be a very important factor and can often lead to clubs paying a premium, where there isn’t an alternative. Like Maguire going to Man U, they overpaid because they couldn’t find anyone else available who they thought was as good and they desperately needed to strengthen.
Another big factor is how many clubs are interested. If it was just Spurs, and Ramsdale wanted to move, they’re in the driving seat to an extent. If there are three clubs, it’s effectively an auction.

I think Norwich were quite smart with Buendia. They set a price and told him that’s what they wanted and they weren’t going to budge. It seems they also convinced him that if he stayed and helped them go up, his price would be met and they’d let him go for that, even if he was arguably worth even more. I think, generally, established players are more receptive to this, they’re already on decent money and tend to believe they’ll be plenty of opportunities if the just continue to play well. It’s harder with young players as they’ve earned very little and see it as their big chance to become rich and successful. Unless a club can offer them a hugely improved contract, it’s difficult to keep them. A club doesn’t want to get a reputation for holding their young players back, or they become a less attractive option at youth level. The fact we can point to all the PL players who’ve come through our academy is a selling point for young players deciding which academy to chose.

Rammers seems fairly happy to be with us, will have earned a reasonable amount by now and will be on decent, but not spectacular, money. I think we could probably talk him into staying for a season and trying to get us up, on the basis that if we don’t go up, we’ll listen to reasonable offers. The big question for us is how much do we need to raise and can we raise it by selling other players?
I’d like us to keep him if we can, if only because if we don’t go up, we might need to sell to finance next season’s campaign. And he’s a good keeper, I doubt there’ll be a better one in the championship and having a good keeper is important.
I've liked your post Bush but the only caveat I'd make (not directly related to Rambo) is that if we don't get promoted in the coming season , we are probably fucked for a good long time.
Any decent players will be on their bikes at the end of 21/22.

I wouldn't write-off Brewster (or McBurnie) quite yet. CW insisting on playing a flat 3 in midfield resulted in the front 2 (whoever they were) being isolated. That coupled with the lack of service/quality from the mid 3 and the wingbacks made playing up front for Utd all but impossible. Only McGoldrick was able to show any sort of quality - not because he the only one that possesses it, but more that he was able to drop deeper to collect the ball and be less reliant on service from others.

Hopefully a change of approach and formation, as well as a lower standard of opposition will negate the same happening next season

Don't get me wrong, I'm still a big believer in Brewster and was a massive advocate of signing him and I do still think he'll come good! But going purely from last season's performances, they haven't been worth the money yet.

Hopefully Slav will get inside his head and get him banging them in and paying off his fee!

Gooners fancy Aaron now , so let's hope for a 3-way bidding war and enough incoming funds to replace JoC & the entire midfield

Would really like to see the 2 North London clubs slogging it out with the Wolverhampton Portugese !

Such a shame we haven't got Kevin McCabe telling us he can't avoid selling star players for a pittance !
I wonder what Rambo's release clause figure is.

If it's less than £30m , Bettis wants feckin shootin .... Let me get my gun cocked ...

Maybe but we’ll still have 2 years of parachute payments and they won’t be leaving for nothing if they’re decent so we’ll just have to buy some new ones.

Mind you , Jag's was £4m at the same time that big twat of a CB went from Wolves to Citeh for £16m - no wonder Jags stuck his hand up - with a bargain fee like that , his Everton wages must have been eye-watering.
Then , after he's clapped out , he gets to come back to the Lane for another juicy payday !
Something so 'Colin' about that whole scenario.
I wonder where bits of Jag's wages ended up ?

I don't want us to sell him.
You might if it's the only source of funds to replace JoC + our woeful midfield.
The club are hopefully never going to publicise what their transfer budget is (for obvious reasons).
So we can only speculate , but we can get an equivalent goalie for possibly half what we might receive for Rambo.
With a new manager , this window is gonna be far more fun than last season's matches.

Dem parachutes get much smaller though ...
It will reduce by around £5m next season if we don’t go up. The bigger reduction will be year 3 when it drops by roughly just over a half.

20 million buys you an under 21 international not a senior international. Brentford stood firm with raya last year we should do the same with ramsdale imo.

That’s interesting, the one I saw had only £40m for the first year and £35m in the second. 55% first year, 45% second year and 20% final year, of the PL income that is divided equally amongst the PL clubs (ie not counting the extras you get depending on where you finish etc).

I think their figures are out a little.

Decent players on their bikes: I assume that must be Mousset?
