Unfit, overweight players

the lockdown, restart, short offseason and then a bizarre season have all contributed to what we see now. The players aren’t so much unfit, but have been pushed to their limits and beyond in some cases.

Same challenges faced by every other team in the league yet every single one of them fared far better than we have.

There has to be something though in how for the first time under Wilder we've faced significant injuries throughout the season. Did we go at it too hard during the first lockdown? Did we not do enough? Was too much trust placed on players to be self disciplined?

Yeah i accept that all teams had the same starting conditions, but there are a number of factors that we are all aware of that meant that any run of injuries would really affect us

We didn't have the depth of experience in the squad
We probably did go too hard during lockdown

I don't think there was any suggestion of the majority (yes there were at least two that we know about) of the squad being poorly disciplined, we're basically fucked as we've run a small squad into the ground...

Could we have done something differently? I am sure we could, thats why i'm surprised that the key back room staff has gone, give them the chance to change things going forward... this may have been done but we're not privvy to that info.

I read articles about both Derby and WBA where both have said that they trained too hard during lockdown and it cost them going into this season.

I still think it’s a generic soundbite for a new manager though to appease fans and give them a bit of time free from flak.

Possibly so, but there have been different approaches... it was an unprecedented situation and I can see the logic in Wilder wanting them to be "bang at it" by the time lockdown ended

SwissBlade

Bang on it mate.

You know this is a massive bug bear of mine, and I spend far too long thinking abou it!

You're right with the new signings not being oven ready. The 'Championship Squad' were/are all of an age where they've past their physical peak, yet the young players we've brought in simply haven't stepped up to replace them both from a physical and ability perspective.

In his minds eye, I'm assuming Tufty had version of Lowe and Bogle bombing out wide with Brewster/Mousset/McBurnie up top...

The results has been watching Stevens, Fleck, Norwood, Basham, McGoldrick all getting old before our very eyes...

As we've seen, managers live and die by the quality of signings...

Something that was noticeable in the game against Peterborough. Freeman definitely looks to be carrying too much weight to be at his fittest. He is playing alright when he comes on but it looks like it could take time for him to get to the level needed to complete 90min.
Though Marriot and Clarke Harris for Peterborough looked 2 stone overweight. Not sure how professional players on a good wage are allowed to get away with it.
