Ollessendro’s 4th visit to Loftus Road turned out to be a miserable one, as United were thoroughly outplayed by a much better side. I was in fairly upbeat mood when I had a couple of ale’s in the boozer before the game, but my mood changes when I saw the team sheet. Seeing Collins starting sent chills right through me. Watching QPR slickly pass the ball about and United chase shadows I quickly realised any hopes of nicking a draw were futile. The defence looked terrified of Taarbart and they looked more jittery than I felt.
Support: There were only a few hundred United fans and we really struggled to get behind the team. At 0-0 we were getting easily out sung and then when we fell behind it got worse. As the game slipped away from us chants got more desperate and tended to focus on abusing Kenny or insulting QPR. I looked round mid way through the second half and have never seen much a bunch of depressed fans. People sat with their head in their hands, or rolling their eyes, right through to bollocking the efforts of Noz and Henderson. A thoroughly depressing atmosphere on a horrible night to be a Blade.
The game (and United): I am sure you all watched the game, so I won’t do a report. I actually thought that we weren’t that bad and 3-0 flattered them. I mean, there was a big gulf in class, but if you look at efforts on goals, corners etc then we were fairly equal. A mixture of class and clownery gave QPR a very easy win.
Whilst it was 1-1 we still looked in the game and we had a couple of chances. However we didn’t really have any sort of cutting edge. From the stands I never thought we looked like getting in the game. QPR moved the ball easily and sliced through us at free will. We had to work hard for our chances, but I thought Quinn was tireless and our only real dangerous player.
As per usual the defence cost us. Collins played the winger onside and then (with 3 red and white shirts in the box and one blue and white) QPR managed to score. Hopeless marking and ball watching from Nosworthy and Collins gifted the league leaders the lead. Game over. The comedy second goal was nothing short of school boy stuff. Noz in no danger and in tow minds managed to somehow give away a corner (even if it wasn’t) through incredibly poor footballing skills. From the resulting corner QPR scored again. It was a great strike, but where were the men on the edge of the box? And what a soft clearance. Good strike, piss poor defending on many accounts.
The 3rd was pure class. QPR were in fine flow and really punished us. I clapped the goal as it is one of the best I’ve seen live for a while.
But credit where it is due. We battled back hard at 1 nil down and came back into the game. We didn’t have a lot of penetration, but we came back into it. We had a couple of chances (I remember a couple of shots, Hendo header and Quinn bursting through) and although never really looking like scoring, we worked hard. Quinn was at the centre of everything and Monty broke up QPR attacks well.
However, I thought Boggy and Ched were poor, Henderson won 1 header all night, Doyle is awful and Nos/Collins/Mattock were embarrassing in that they cannot control a ball or pass 5 yards to another Blades player.
QPR: you can see why they are up there. They are solid, they pass the ball well, they have pace and creativity, they are dangerous and they ooze confidence. I was particularly impressed by their number 11 (just looked him up - Alejandro Faurlin). He is a class act. Strong, good on the ball, always an option and did a brilliant job of breaking up our attacks. Derry did a good defensive job, Hall had Henderson in his pocket and I’ve always rated Gjorks. Routledge is dangerous and (although quiet last night) Taarbart can unlock defences. They just have a strong team with the likes of Helgusson, Orr and Smith (as well as the others mentioned) all comfortable on the ball.
Adams: he went for it and I cannot blame him for that. Realistically I think we were never going to get anything out of the game and hence it would be harsh to criticise him too much. He looked desperate, despondent and lost out on the touchline, but I think I would be. I think it would only be fair to give him the next 2 home games (rather than judge him for an away defeat to the best team in the league).
That said he persists with Collins, Nosworthy and Doyle who are all embarssments to the shirt. They are clowns and it amazes me they are professional footballers. Adams two permanent signings are the worst players in the team and this does not give me confidence. People keep saying ‘give Micky time’, ‘he’ll build a squad’ and the likes, but can he? Can you really see Micky Adams building a team capable of within League One, based on his signings so far? With the exception of Riise and Vokes they have all been flops. Worse still we are stuck with Collins and Doyle who I doubt are good enough for League One.
The long walk home: Last night was a thoroughly depressing night for me. I did not enjoy the game at all. The atmosphere was flat and our performance not good enough. This was my fifth straight loss in a row and we have not managed a single goal in any of those games (and conceded 11). I should just stop going and (I am sad to say) that I am pleased that I will not be going to another game until August.
I walked back from Loftus Road to my home in Putney Bridge and pondered. Yesterday evening was a real low point for me. I know that I should not have expected anything from the game, but it was so depressing in the Blades end. When you look at the fat that the last 6 games I have been to we have not scored a single goal and have lost the last 5, then it probably tells you why. How the fuck am I supposed to get behind Adams when I have travelled to Watford, Ipswich, Portsmouth, Palace and QPR and we’ve not only lost, but we haven’t scored and single goal and conceded 11??
Last night was the all time low point of supporting United. I started going in 1993 and although we’ve had some bad times I have never felt so dejected. I’ve never seen such a bunch of wankers representing the club. I haven’t seen such a persistent run of crap performances. Never seen such clown like, school boy defending every single week. Relegation smacked me in the face and all I could think about was dark times ahead. I was almost in tears walking home and little could do to pick up my mood.
