Anyone remember this random match?

I wasnt at the match, I remember reading that Keith Waugh saved a penalty in the final minutes

Yes I went with my Uncle. Kenworthy scored both goals. Penalties.

They got a penalty near the end and Waugh saved it. Their player subsequently booted Waugh in the stomach and got sent off!

I remember the match, I didn't go I was at Wembley that Saturday on a school trip, England v Holland, schoolboy international if i remember correctly 7-0 to England.

I must have heard the United score somewhere along the way as I remember thinking yeah 2-2, a win might have been better but we'll take an away point.

There was the usual pitch invasion at the end of the game which was customary that season. A few Tranmere fans then ran on before running back off.

one of 3 I missed that season........my mate went and came home via the local hospital having been glassed from behind by a brave "almost scouser"

I went to that game on the footie special train. There was a load of trouble before and after. We had a police escort from the station at Rock Ferry . They held us back at every road junction so they could clear the side roads of rock throwing scouse urchins. Some carriage windows got put in as we left the station by same urchins as they waved farewell. Even got done verbal abuse from some old dear stood on her front doorstep.
Those ‘loveable scousers’ eh.

I remember it well. I was sat with my grandad up in the stands. Quite a bit of bother near the end if my memory serves me right. My first and final trip to Tranmere.

Yes a Saturday away day in the 4th division was always ‘eventful’. A few more hundred to the usual ‘hordes’ especially within 3 hours of Sheffield. Think Waugh saved the penalty at t’other end to the away following IIRC. Was only 17 at the time and managed to stay away from ‘trouble’ but fully aware it was kicking off.

About 12 of us in a minibus went in a pub before the game (White Swan) or something, but I can't remember for sure.

We were chatting and having a right laugh with the Tranmere fans.

We played the biggest game of chase the ace ever, where at least three packs of cards were used

A coach full of Blades came down the street.

The pub emptied, and the pub manager was taking the nice (White Swan FC) jumpers off their backs before the scrapping started.
"Hey, hey, lad, you still owe us a fiver for that" he was saying to some of them.

We carried on drinking and then the Tranmere fans came back in, a few with bloody noses, but generally in high spirits as they'd obviously thought they'd done ok.

They just got the cards out again and we continued our game of chase the ace.

Went to the game and we were on the terrace down the side of the pitch.

Next thing it all kicks off,
This mob of Tranmere fans from the pub were in our end with us.

They punched and kicked a few, saying ,"Hello, how you doing" to us in the process, before eventually having to make an exit over the barrier and down the side of the pitch and back into their own end.

A surreal experience, which every away game seemed to be in those days

Anybody seen Away Days?? Good film about a group of Tranmere Hooligans, ‘The Pack’. It’s got a great music score as well. Always enjoyed going to Tranmere, last time I went Dane Whitehouse scored in a 1-1 draw, 1997 I think.

We went on the train had to change in Liverpool
Went back to Liverpool after the game, it had been the derby game, went in a few pubs and couldnt understand that Liverpool and Everton fans were sitting together chatting away. That didnt happen in Sheffield

Meanwhile, 40 years ago today, United 2 Millwall 3. This was in our relegation season. If I remember correctly we were winning 2-0.

An entertaining game.

We started very well and went 1-0 up from a Kenworthy penalty fairly early in the game. Was it Morris who was brought down?I thought it was going to be a comfortable win.

However, Tranmere came back into it and equalised before half time. They then went ahead in the second half. I seem to remember it as being about half way through the half, but could well be wrong. I don't remember anything about their goals other than that they scored them and went 2-1 up! Time ticked by and our several game unbeaten run looked to be under serious threat.

With very little time remaining, we were awarded another penalty. Again, I don't remember the circumstances of it, but do remember that United were playing towards the away end, so Kenworthy was right in front of us when he banged it home.

That was that, or so we thought. But there then followed more drama when Tranmere were awarded a penalty right at the end of the game. Waugh saved it and I think their penalty taker got sent off for kicking Waugh while he was spreadeagled on the ground.

The match ended and all hell broke loose. I seem to remember seats and other missiles being thrown onto the pitch from the main stand down the left side of the pitch (if viewing from the away end). Outside the ground there seemed to be police everywhere and various skirmishes between rival supporters.

A draw was probably about right. Both sides played some good football at times and Tranmere looked a useful side. From memory I think they put in a reasonable performance in their 2-0 defeat at Bramall Lane earlier in the season as well. I think Bob Hatton scored his 200th league goal in that match.

I remember the ref blowing for full time bang on 90 minutes with no added time. Waugh was still groggy from the penalty and he probably thought if Tranmere had scored there would be trouble. As it turns out there was plenty anyway.
