My father in law joined the navy in 1953, as a 'Ping Bo's'un' (Sonar)

He left in 1987 as the most senior underwater warfare instructor in the Royal Navy. He could have been sat in that class. He was a sub hunter by trade.

That film, with other naval classics like 'In Which We Serve' with the outstandingly aloof Noel Coward is shown regularly at sea (usually on a Sunday) in messdecks, even today. Mess members don their lifejackets and anti flash hoods when the characters in the films do and many lines from both films are used frequently.

I was outside the ground earlier and it dawned on me that if some reporter stuck a microphone in front of my face and asked for my reaction, I would have no idea how to properly articulate what I thought and I'd just give some standard response like "Yeah I'm gutted y'know".
