Thoughts?

The midfield looks a bit lightweight. Swap Monty for currie, and i think we have a winner.

Ironic that they're playing 4-3-3?

OK if it's 4-4-2

Simmo

Lowton Collins Lowry Mattock

Riise Williamson Monty Quinn

Vokes Evans

Fatty Foulkes between the posts

Nudger Needham at full back

Jimmy Hagan on the wing

We did exist before WWII you know :D
not my choices, but admittedly I find I difficult to comment on pre WW2 players as I don't know enough about them. I imagine they would've suffered the same difficulties but from hearsay you'd have at least thought Hagan would've made the XI

Wasn't Nudger the only Blade to captain England - got to count for something. And Fatty - the man who originally ate all the pies - legend!!

swap harry johnson for curtis woodhouse and go 4-4-2 with woody on right, dane on left with curtis doing the donkey work for TC to feed wings and deano target man and knocking down for edwards to do what he does best.
and swap out maybe one of the shaw's for paul mcgrath and i think we have a winner :)

Weird that they go back pre ward for Harry Johnson but skip Jimmy Dunne, probably the finest goalscorer ever seen at Bramall Lane. Id also think Alan Hodgkinson and Bill Foulkes should get picked ahead of Alan Kelly, but then, for me, Tracey shades Kelly. Agree with Highbury about the lightweight midfield but would give Trevor Hockey the nod over Monty. Actually, Id give Mark Patterson the nod over Monty.

Against a very heavy ball.

And how would any of our more recent keepers have fared with a heavy ball? We dont actually know which set of conditions this dream team would be playing under. Also, how do we know how well Joe Shaw would have got on with the new offside rule (and both he and Harry Johnson played with a heavy ball like Foulkes)? How would Kelly or Tracey have coped with rules which allowed a centre forward to barge you into the net while you had both hands on the ball and both feet on the ground and still get a goal? Foulke must have had something going for him.

Good points. Well made.

I'm a big admirer of Dane Whitehouse but there are at least three you would prefer in left midfield: Gil Reece, Alex Sabella and Glyn Hodges. Also, you really can't leave out Mick Jones up front and Hagan in midfield.

I'm tempted to treat the joke selections with silent contempt but Curtis Woodhouse???

Any of those left midfield selections good in the tackle? (Genuine Question BTW, i'm too young to have seen first hand.)

I can only go on what my dad says but Reece, despite being one of his favourites, wasnt much of a tackler and neither was Hodges as I remember (not to say he didnt try, but a card was the result more often than not). To go back a bit Fred Tunstall would probably be Woodwards only serious competition for outside left, my great grandad used to rave about him.

No Highbury, they couldn't tackle a fish supper between them! But they could all play! Gil Reece was a genuine old-fashioned winger. Slightly built but quick, skilful and a great finisher. He was a superb header of the ball for his size and often knocked one in at the far post to the disbelief of taller defenders.

Two England internationls, Hodgkinson in goal and Mi-Mic-Mick-Mick Jones centre forward.

Creswell sub

Woody was a right winger
