Not a big fan of loan players myself. Firstly; why are the loaning club loaning them out; A. Not good enough to get a game for the parent club;B. Too young and need experience (I.E Henderson) useful on the Goalkeeping side not too clever for an out field player;C. Coming back from a big injury (Gamble).D. Big wages and parent club looking for a mug of a club to share the exuberant wages. E. Player looking for a last pay cheque I.E Jack Wheelchair. F. Player is just loaded with bad baggage I.E ( insert your own name) of which there are many. Just my thoughts hope someone can prove me wrong if this is the field we are ploughing.

It'll be shit or bust next season and if it doesn't work out, then we'll be in full rebuild mode and not burdened by lengthy expensive contracts that has gotten a lot of other relegated clubs into a big mess!

Looking at the squad the big money loans would go back and Bill, Didz, Moose, Osborn, Basham and Robinson would be out of contract. A lot in their last year. We'd be pretty bare bones in terms of young players we owned and be down to our last year of big money from the parachute payments.

For me it depends on who we are keeping.

If the 'loans only' approach means we're keeping JOC, Egan and Berge then I'm cool with it. Naturally, if it doesn't, it means we are selling them and if so we surely cannot go for 'loans only' - we'll need to reinvest some of the incoming fees.

It's short termism at its finest. Should be looking to bring in at least 2-3 permanents. More if a lot of players go out. If we can get the average age/wage down even if it means offloading Stevens, Mousset, Norwood, Baldock and one or two of the big hitters that'd be a positive. Strategic. I imagine the majority of the contracted players will be on top end Championship money which might be unsustainable for the Prince in 23/24; so the quicker it happens the better. It's a fool that waits for the shit to hit the fan before acting.

Getting rid of Norwood prior to a Championship campaign would be disastrous.

Yes Chingo ! we tried it when Blackwell was manager it failed! .
We would need better loan signings than the ones we had then.
When it hits up in the championship would the players on loan buy into it.Ok having one or two is fine ! Playing half a team of loan signings is totally different.
Dangling the opportunity of a contract if successful may work.
Theres no doubt quality loan signings are needed.
With 2 years in prem and parachute payments,surely we're not skint and can bring in a few permanent deals.

Never liked this strategy - too boom and bust. If you don't get promoted your asset base is diminished and you don't have many playing assets. Restock the shelves please CW even if it's bargain basement. A couple of loans tops.

true... plus as we’ve seen ourselves, a £0-4m cast off can outperform majority of championship players under Wilder’s tutelage any way... why dont we just stick to our guns and go for lower league prospects and add some real value to our squad

what i also dont understand, is that if our squads are based on personality, determination and passion...

then why are we bringing in epl/championship rejects for one season who wont give a toss except for their own ambitions

would much rather we build a Blades 2.0 under Wilder with the ethos we have applied which gave us the success in the first place.

Don't have an issue with staying with 3 at the back - but inventing/creating a new midfield is absolutely paramount to getting straight back up or at least finishing top 6 to have a crack at the playoffs.

3412 got us INTO the premier League and I would be extremely disappointed if we didn't return to this and having a number 10. Duffy was the master technician in that position so finding an effective replacement is absolutely vital. The new No:10 is not McG for me either so one has to be unearthed.

Fleck should be ok next season - although appreciate that someone in the prem might want him. The main question is Berge - going or staying. If he stays then he really has to play as number one choice on the right of the central two.

So we may need 2 new central midfield players to go with Fleck depending on Berge. It's a big ask to get them to gel straight away.

Here lies our problem - get the midfield wrong and it's goodbye to a decent challenge - no matter how decent our defence may be.

At least CW has a plan for this type of season - same as before - get to Xmas and in a position to then step up after Xmas and make a real push. We've done it before - there's no reason why we can't do it again as we start with a better base of player.

agree with your points youve made and it certainly looks like chris will go back to the 3412 set up also agree with you that mcgoldrick is not the answer for that role berge will definetly be sold imo so yes midfield is key this summer fleck should be ok with osborn as cover so the right side of the 2 plus the number 10 role are the positions we need to bring players in to maybe back for swift and take a gamble on bradley dack

Trim the squad?? We already have a threadbare squad as it is! One of the reasons why we’re going down.
I don’t like the loan idea either, unless they’re all being signed with a view to making it permanent if we went up. That being said, if we could recruit the calibre of a Harry Wilson, Mount, Henderson etc who knows.
We followed a similar model 07/08. Probably the best squad “on paper” we’ve had. Shame we had two inept managers.

I don't have any problems with a couple of loan signings, it's a market we haven't utilised fully for years. Look at Villa when they got promoted, would've never happened without the likes of Abraham. If we also trim the squad hopefully that'll help create a pathway for a couple of the young players too. RND being the obvious one, but there's also really young players like Ayari, Ndiaye and Hackford. Who might be being considered for the squad.

My worry loan wise is whether we'll have the wages to attract the higher end of the market and who's actually available. Obviously midfield, particularly attacking mid is number 1 priority.

I'm struggling to think of good attacking midfielders who might be available for loan. Only couple currently on loan I can think of are : Knockaert, who's struggled at Forest and is a bit of a dick, still think he could be good in the Duffy role though. Mohamed Elyounoussi, showed some talent at Celtic, more a winger but has played attacking mid, also a Norwegian international, so if we could keep Berge could we tempt him to drop to the championship?

There must be some talented young Prem players out there, struggling to think of any though.

I’ve a theory that the announcement Biggs put out is just Wilder trying to court favour with the fans. The DoF revelation went down like a bit of a led balloon, from his perspective, with the majority seeing the merits in it.

Perhaps the board has said they’ll not get a DoF in, but it’s loans only.

I think it's very concerning if we only go for loans. I cant see how we can plan for medium to long term when we have huge gaps in our midfield to be filled.
Not only that be our past loans haven't exactly set the world on fire. (Henderson, Blackman excepted)

i would certainly try to get coubilay back here i dont think it will just be loans however most loans these days include a view to buy at the end of the season we may go down that route

The issue is the as you rightly point out Henderson is the anomaly loan signing when in comes to wilders tenure and uniteds history in a wider sense.
