Looks like Wilder is going to revert back to having a no 10, which is a huge relief to me and hopefully a lot of fans.

I wish we'd have moved to it this season and been a little more bold in our approach.

That would seem to confirm Didzy as a forward option, probably with Billy, McBurnie, Brewster and Burke plus perhaps Hackford. I can see Mousse being elsewhere.

Maybe Freeman gets a shout if Forest don't sign him but if Chris does fancy a no 10 who are the candidates? Championship players and Premiership loans perhaps?

Always quite liked Wallace of Millwall myself. Also like a couple of the lads at Reading though maybe they will move upwards - Michael Olise and Ejaria. Bradley Dack in this sort of role is another.

How about PL loanees?

Thoughts?

Which begs the question why not at least give it a go in some games at this level? I can understand a more cautious approach against Man City, Liverpool, Man U etc..

But not having a go with this formation vs Fulham, Newcastle, Villa, Palace, etc over the last couple of seasons is harder to excuse.

There aren't many CAM types per se in the Championship who we could afford, or would come to us (Olise, Buendia) in the Duffy mould
But there are a few players playing on the wing, upfront, or centrally who could potentially play that 10 role.

Obviously you've got the infamous John Swift. Alan Browne one of the best midfielders in the league, who can play all the central roles.
Then with wingers you've got Jed Wallace who's one of my favourites, Bright Osayi Samuel.
I like Callum Styles, Ovie Ejaria, and rate Ilias Chair too.

We don't have one. Didsy looks lost when he plays it and his vision isn't good enough, on the edge of the box he can't see opportunities, he just has a shot and balloons it or passes it to the keeper.
It's really fucking unreal that we don't have any sort of attack minded midfield player. It's fucking crazy.

This is correct Didsy's decision making around the box has made me more angry than the defending this season.

A number 10, overloading in wide areas and overlapping centre backs. Pub reopens and we’re playing Saturday and Tuesdays. Gives me a pocket bulge just thinking about it. Roll on august 7th!

For the OP, 18 months ago I would have said Luke Freeman all day long, I was so happy we signed him. Fingers crossed he can play that position on a regular basis and make it his own.

Depends how strong your CM 2 is.

Fine if Sander and Jimmy 😉.

Not so much if Norwood and Rodders !

We had one last season and hardly used him then loaned him out to Forest.. poor recruitment and narrow thinking.

He's a Sheffield United fan.

So if he's one of the 99.99% why would he even consider that shitty old us could ever be good enough to take on the might of Brighton, Fulham or Crystal Palace

We have to give Freeman a go imo... he was and still could be ace at Championship level. Tbh i would be happy with Didzy and Freeman sharing this role.

But ideally I would also like us to roll the dice on Dack, i think he is a top player and would be good for us

It’s a shame we didnt keep Robinson and buy Burke outright, as i think CR would be a decent CAM at that level

think dack would be an excellent addition for us i would also bring freeman back and let the pair of em battle it out for the number 10 position really hope we go back to this system next season

Tweets from Biggs today also suggests no permanent signings in the summer, CW's wish, (if he is here still) is to keep the majority of the squad together, trim it by 6 or 7 and add 4 of 5 "quality" loan signings......according to big Al anyway...

That's yet more narrow minded short term thinking and a horrific missed opportunity if so.

Here we go again, Squad fillers!!

Not sure about this as a strategy. Wouldn’t it mean we have to replace them all the following summer if we go up? Or even if we don’t, actually.

Not necessarily if some are loan to buy? Also means hopefully we have more scope for something more permanent in terms of signings should we go back up.

Not ideal, but I can see the logic.

Let's be right, the article is pretty thin on substance but I for one hope it's true.
I think the loan market is exactly how we should be looking to improve ourselves with a buy option tied in should we make it back up.

I would have liked us to move for some of the youngsters like the kid from Derby or Styles but hopefully we're looking at targets ahead of these hence the loans.
Freeman is highly likely to be back I'd suggest and I'd still like Mowatt as he's on a free.

Fair point on loan to buy, although the best young PL players aren't likely to available on those terms.

I'd like to see us bringing in at least a couple of younger players on permanents who we think we can develop into PL quality over time. Easier said than done, I acknowledge, especially with the new Brexit rules.

That Alan Biggs article is pure, made-up filler with absolutely nothing to back it up. He literally says "I would imagine these to be roughly Wilder's terms" and then is just plucking ideas from thin air.
Do you think so? I know he has previous but seems strange that both he and Hemmingham would have similar insights on the same day. Sounds to me like Chris had breakfast with a couple of local journalists.

I think the question you ask answers another one and that being that he clearly doesn’t see didzy as a 10 other than in a pinch.

That would be a big mistake imo we run a relatively small squad anyway and relying on loan players to play key roles is a high risk strategy anyway plus if we were to get promoted they would have to be replaced anyway leading to a disrupted summer where we’d be having to have a very large overhaul.

Valid points, and I'd agree. But putting my Football Manager (I know I know) hat on, here's the scenarios as I'd imagine them.

Scenario 1. CW has a list of targets that may, for want of a better phrase, be ideal players for the Champ, but not quite so sure if they would be prem (example being Norwood). So, we sign players on loan to get us there, and take it from there.

Scenario 2. Some of these might be ex prem, circa 30 years old but still (hopefully) good players wanting to prove something. The loan thing would make more sense as these sort of players would have very little, if any, resale value.

Scenario 3. basically a mix of 1 & 2.

This is all just guesstimation really, but there you go

Surely a journalist wouldn’t just make stuff up for click bait?!

We’ve also had a high quality loan this year in ampadu and seen the high variance associated with playing young players. I’m not against it so long as we are the ones reaping the benefits from developing young players but loanees usual make there mistakes for you and another club gets the benefit. A standout outlier would be Henderson where both us and the loaning club benefitted.

because he really isn't. I get the love for Didsy, but the reason he can do what he's done for us over the years is because he drops deep as a forward and finds that space.
That ain't a number 10.

Also let's not fall for the fact these announcement aren't just aimed at fans. We clearly don't want teams bumping up prices because we've got Parachute millions burning a hole in our pockets so if we start a narrative (as we always did) that we're not spending big it keeps the market realistic.
Fans are often collateral damage in shaping the perception to other clubs what our intentions are.
Taking a detached view. We're putting it out there that we're not spending big in the summer, we have some players available not just squad fillers, and we're looking for quality players only.
